Interfacial effect in polymetric composites have been studied extensively. This report deals mainly with the effects of interfacial space charge and interface structure. A model for the dynamic process of interfacial space charge accumulation is proposed. The new model might interpret some interface phenomena which is difficult to be explained in terms of traditional Maxwell-Wagner theory. An interface structure is also presented, by which the importance of surface treatment of glass Fiber for improving the properties of FRP could be well understood.
We use UV(ultraviolet)-$O_3$ treatment to increase the surface area and porosity of $TiO_2$ films in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). After the UV-$O_3$ treatment, surface area and porosity of the $TiO_2$ films were increased, the increased porosity lead to amount of dye loading and solar conversion efficiency was improved. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images clearly showed that the nanocrystalline porosity of films were increased by UV-$O_3$ treatment. The Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller surface area of the $TiO_2$ films were increased from $0.71cm^2/g$ to $1.31cm^2/g$ by using UV-$O_3$ treatment for 20 min. Also, UV-$O_3$ treatment of $TiO_2$ films significantly enhanced their solar conversion efficiency. The efficiency of the films without treatment was 4.9%, and was increased to 5.6% by UV-$O_3$ treatment for 20 min. Therefore the process enhanced the solar conversion efficiency of DSSCs, and can be used to develop high sensitivity DSSCs.
Understanding the mechanistic details of heterogeneous catalytic reactions will provide a way to tune the selectivity between various competing reaction channels. In this regard, catalytic decomposition of alcohols over the rutile $TiO_2$(110) surface as a model oxide catalyst has been studied to understand the reaction mechanism employing the temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) technique. The $TiO_2$(110) model catalyst is found to be active toward alcohol dehydration. We find that the active sites are bridge-bonded oxygen vacancies where RO-H heterolytically dissociates and binds to the vacancy to produce alkoxy (RO-) and hydroxyl (HO-). Two protons adsorbed onto the bridge-bonded oxygen atoms (-OH) readily react with each other to form a water molecule at ~500 K and desorb from the surface. The alkoxy (RO-) undergoes decomposition at higher temperatures into the corresponding alkene. Here, the overall desorption kinetics is limited by a first-order decomposition of intermediate alkoxy (RO-) species bound to the vacancy. We show that detailed analysis on the yield and the desorption temperatures as a function of the alkyl substituents provides valuable insights into the reaction mechanism. After the catalytic role of the oxygen vacancies has been established, we employed x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to further study the surface electronic structure related to the catalytically active defective sites. The defect-related state in valence band has been related to the chemically reduced $Ti^{3+}$ defects near the surface region and are found to be closely related to the catalytic activity of the $TiO_2$(110) surface.

Piezoelectric langasite crystals have superior properties such as high temperature performance and high quality Q and can be applied in combustion pressure sensors and surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters. Crystal growth, crystal structure and properties of langasite group are reviewed, and the mechanism of piezoelectricity of langasite is presented based on the crystal structure and deformation under high pressure. Finally, for the discovery of new piezoelectric materials, this paper presents the role of the framework, and recommends the search of framework crystal structure, because the characteristic of the mechanism exists on the framework of the crystal structure.
In this paper, we have investigated the degradation of shed materials of outdoor insulators by UV-radiation by using corona-charging and XPS analysis. The accumulated charges on polymeric surface having intrinsic hydrophobic property have a negative impact on retaining its hydrophobicity. Therefore, shorter decay times of surface charges are preferred. The surface voltage decay on UV-treated silicone rubber and EPDM show a different decay trend with UV treated time. From the XPS analysis, the oxidized groups of silica-like structure in silicone rubber increase with UV treatment time. For EPDM, the oxidized carbon groups of C=O, O=C-O increase as elapse of UV radiation time. These oxidized surface for each material have different electrostatic characteristics, so deposited charges may be expected to have different impacts on their surface hydrophobicity. The degradation mechanism based on our results is discussed.
In this study, we report that an electrical properties of OLEDs was investigated by the surface etching method of ITO Layer. The electrical properties of OLEDs was measured by IVL and optical properties by EL spectrum. The fundamental structure of OLEDs was ITO anode/TPD(400$\breve{A}$)/$Alq_3(600\breve{A})$/LiF(5$\breve{A}$)/Al(1200$\breve{A}$) cathode. The threshold voltage was low value according to the low resistance of surface. The luminance was increased by decreased surface resistance.
We have investigated that the monodomain alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) is obtained with polarized ultraviolet(PUV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surface. The LC alignment capability increases with increasing the UV light irradiation time. The polarized UV light irradiation on oblique angle of 60。 irradiated on PI surface rotated by 90。 at 10 min. after being normally irradiated on PI surface at 30 min., the generated pretilt angle of NLC is about 2.5。. The pretilt angle of NLC is attributed to the interaction between the LC molecules and the asymmetric triangular structure of polymer surface due to photo-depolymerization of polymer with the oblique UV light on PI surface. The voltage -transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-LCD with UV light irradiation time 60 min. were almost same in comparison with the rubbing-treated TN-LCD.
In this paper we have investigated the surface degradation by ultraviolet-irradiation in high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber. Through the measurement of surface potential decay by corona-charging and of contact angle it is found that the change of surface electrostatic properties and the decrease of contact angle under UV-radiation. For the changes in micro-morphological and chemical structure of the UV-treated silicone rubber we utilized several analytical techniques such as SEM, ATR-FTIR,XPS. From this study it is shown that the chemical reactions(scissoring of side chain(S-$CH_3$) cross-linking and branching) occur on the surface of silicone rubber during the UV-irradiation. Also we obtained the results of the loss of low molecular weight chain by cross-linking and oxidation reaction.
The electronic and adsorption structures of Mg and p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene (p-TBCA) adsorbed onto a Ge(100) surface under a variety of sample conditions were characterized using high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES) and their corresponding DFT calculation results. Interestingly, after 0.10 ML p-TBCA molecules had been adsorbed onto a Ge(100) surface, subsequent adsorption of a small amount of metallic Mg (~0.10 ML) resulted in the formation of a capped structure inside the pre-adsorbed p-TBCA molecules. The adsorption structures resulting from further deposition of Mg (~0.50 ML) onto the Ge(100) surface were monitored based on the surface charge state and Mg 2s core level spectrum. Work function measurements clearly indicated the electronic structures of the Mg and p-TBCA adsorbed onto the Ge(100) surface. Moreover, we confirmed that three different adsorption structures are experimentally favorable at room temperature through DFT calculation results.
