Wear resistant TiAlN thin film has been widely deposited on the surface of cutting and forming tools by using Arc Ion Plating. TiAlN films are deposited by the processes designed by the Taguchi L18 experimental design. The L18 experimental design is applied to achieve surface properties and adhesion. The deposition parameters are working pressure, substrate temperature, bias voltage, arc power and pre-sputtering bias voltage and time. The most influential parameters on surface properties and adhesion are substrate bias voltage, working nitrogen pressure and arc power. The optimal coating processes are obtained for surface properties and adhesion.
In this study, a rational procedures for estimation of insulation thickness for condensation control or personnel protection has been investigated. Both horizontal pipe and vertical wall configuration are included. Design parameters are pipe diameter or, height of the wall, thermal conductivity, emissivity, and operating temperatures. The results Indicated that the surface emissivity plays a very important role in the design of insulation for the purpose of surface temperature control, especially in natural convection situation. radiation heat transfer coefficients for some new insulation material surface, such as elastomers, estimated to be more than 90% of the total surface heat transfer coefficient. Adequate revision of specifications or standards has been also suggested.

Generally, curved surfaces of ship hull are deformed by flame bending (line heating), multi-press forming, and die-less forming method. The forming methods generate the required in-plane/bending strain or displacement on the flat plate to make the curved surface. Multi-press forming imposes the forced displacements on the flat plate by controlling the position of each pressing points based upon the shape difference between the unfolded flat plate and the curved object shape. The flat plate has been obtained from the unfolding system that is independent of the ship CAD. Apparently, the curved surface and the unfolded-flat surface are expressed by different coordinate systems. Therefore, one of the issues is to find a registration of the unfolded surface and the curved shape for the purpose of minimum amount of forming works by comparing the two surfaces. This paper presents an efficient algorithm to get an optimized registration of two different surfaces in the multi-press forming of ship hull plate forming. The algorithm is based upon the ICP (Iterative Closest Point) algorithm. The algorithm consists of two iterative procedures including a transformation matrix and the closest points to minimize the distance between the unfolded surface and curved surfaces. Thereby the algorithm allows the minimized forming works in ship-hull forming.
Surface segmentation and edge feature lines extraction from fractured fragments of relics are essential steps for computer assisted restoration of fragmented relics. As these fragments were heavily eroded, it is a challenging work to segment surface and extract edge feature lines. This paper presents a novel method to segment surface and extract edge feature lines from triangular meshes of irregular fractured fragments. Firstly, a rough surface segmentation is accomplished by using a clustering algorithm based on the vertex normal vector. Secondly, in order to differentiate between original and fracture faces, a novel integral invariant is introduced to compute the surface roughness. Thirdly, an accurate surface segmentation is implemented by merging faces based on face normal vector and roughness. Finally, edge feature lines are extracted based on the surface segmentation. Some experiments are made and analyzed, and the results show that our method can achieve surface segmentation and edge extraction effectively.
Progressive addition lenses (PAL) have very wide application in the modern glasses market. The unique progressive surface can make a lens have progressive refractive power, which can meet the human eye's different needs for distance-vision and near-vision. According to the national glasses fabrication standard, the difference between actual optical power after fabrication and nominal design value should be less than 0.1D over the lens effective area. The optical power distribution of PAL is determined directly by the surface. Consequently, the surface processing accuracy requirement is proposed. Beginning from the surface expressions of progressive addition lenses, the relationship equations between the surface sag and optical power distribution are derived. They are demonstrated through tolerance analysis and test of an example progressive addition lens with addition of 2.09D (5.46D-7.55D). The example addition surface is fabricated under given accuracy by a single-point diamond ultra-precision machine. The optical power of the PAL example is tested with a focal-meter after fabrication. The optical power addition difference between test result and design nominal value is 0.09D, which is less than 0.1D. The derived relationship between the surface error and optical power is verified from the PAL example simulation and test result. It can provide theoretical tolerance analysis proof for the PAL surface fabricating process.

Rapid urban expansion and densification of the various industrial facilities affect the changes of topography and building in urban areas. Even if buildings proceed with high rise, they get mixed with low-rise buildings such as houses and industrial parks that have existed in the area. This may confuse the designer in estimating a surface roughness, an important factor in calculating the design wind velocity of building. This study analyzed the surface roughness by using a geographic information. Referring to the criteria of each country's building code, this study proposed a method to distinguish the surface roughness depending on the height of the surrounding buildings where the design building is located and calculated the surface roughness using 1:5000 topographic map and GIS. It is expected to solve problems that an existing designer calculates the surface roughness in a subjective manner and to help to design more rational buildings resistant to wind.

The geometry of engineering systems affects their performances. For this reason, the shape of engineering systems needs to be optimized in the initial design stage. However, engineering system design problems consist of multi-objective optimization and the performance analysis using commercial code or numerical analysis is generally time-consuming. To solve these problems, many engineers perform the optimization using the approximation model (response surface). The Response Surface Method (RSM) is generally used to predict the system performance in engineering research field, but RSM presents some prediction errors for highly nonlinear systems. The major objective of this research is to establish an optimal design method for multi-objective problems and confirm its applicability. The proposed process is composed of three parts: definition of geometry, generation of response surface, and optimization process. To reduce the time for performance analysis and minimize the prediction errors, the approximation model is generated using the Backpropagation Artificial Neural Network (BPANN) which is considered as Neuro-Response Surface Method (NRSM). The optimization is done for the generated response surface by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Through case studies of marine system and ship structure (substructure of floating offshore wind turbine considering hydrodynamics performances and bulk carrier bottom stiffened panels considering structure performance), we have confirmed the applicability of the proposed method for multi-objective side constraint optimization problems.
Global air traffic is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of around 5% in the next 20 years. The continuous growth of air traffic and raised environmental awareness put increasing pressure on aero engine manufacturers to reduce fuel burn and emissions. NEWAC are a new integrated program of the European Union with focus on innovative core engine concepts to achieve this problem. In this paper, Within NEWAC, active core engine configurations will be investigated. the investigation is focused on the optimal design of the CAC heat exchanger for active core. For optimal design of he CAC heat exchanger, the HTFS of basic design of heat exchanger are analyzed so as to proceed an optimization routines based on Response Surface Method(RSM) and Design of Experiment(DOE). As a result, CAC heat exchanger optimized by 1.0314 lb/s mass flow rate and 3.9058 mm TP of tube layout and 206.8181 mm height of heat exchanger and 918 tube number for heat transfer and pressure drop. We confirm the design optimization using RSM and DOE is useful on complex structure of heat exchanger.
Analogy in problem solving is similarity-based reasoning facilitated by verbal and visual operation. This similarity-based reasoning generally supports initial phase of idea search. Therefore, this study intends to infer the types of problem solving by tracing the analogy use of verbal and visual representation through a experimental research. According to the result of this research, the types of problem solving by analogy are classified into 'evolving', 'divergent', and 'poor conversion' type. Firstly, 'evolving type' is distinguished between 'combination type' associated different contents to develope a new design and 'transformation type' associated similar words and sketches to be continuously revised and developed. In these types usually structural analogy rather than surface analogy is used. Secondly, in 'divergent type' associated words or sketches are individually represented, and among them one design solution is selected. In this type usually surface analogy is used. Thirdly, in 'poor conversion type' interaction between verbal representation and visual representation does not go on smoothly, and the generation of idea is poor. In here surface analogy is mostly used. These findings could form the basis of skill development of idea generation and conversion in design education.
The inspiration and its application in fashion design is considered as one of the important factors in boosting the fashion arena. Many inspirations are adapted in fashion de-sign and they make the fashion design unique and characteristic. In this study many fashion designs are analyzed to find what kind of inspirations were adapted and utilized for the fashion design in reality. The nature historic costumes ethcin costumes arts sciences literature music sports were revealed as the sources of fashion inspiration.l The concerns on the environments movies and dramas could provide inspirations in fashion as well. Several contents or steps were studied to provide the one of the example of appli-cations as follows: 1. The works of Marc Chagall were analized to figure out and several plastic characteristics from his works were revealed such as fantastic strong colors unreal animal pattern or their details his wife and friends various divisions of the surface and so on. These attributes had been favored in depiction of his works to ex-press his home town or nostalgia. 2. '90s fashion designs inspired by the works of Chagall were analized to find out the meth-odology or the process of designs. The same Chagall colors were used in design and similar pattern were expressed through beaded work or printing jobs. The surface designs such as printing were the most prefered method in adapting the inspirations. 3. The plastic characteristics of the work of Chagall were attempted in clothing design and construction. The color combination patterns which remind the animals the surface divisions were used in design ot practive the methodologies.
