  • The 2-step low temperature plasma processes (the combined carburizing and post-nitriding) were carried out for improving both the surface hardness and corrosion resistance of AISI 316L stainless steel. The effects of processing time and temperature on the surface properties during nitriding step were investigated. The expanded austenite (${\gamma}_N$) was formed on all of the treated surface. The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ was increased up to about $20{\mu}m$ and the thickness of entire hardened layer was determined to be about $40{\mu}m$. The surface hardness reached up to $1,200HV_{0.1}$ which is about 5 times higher than that of untreated sample ($250HV_{0.1}$). The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ and concentration of N on the surface were increased with increasing processing time and temperature. The corrosion resistance in 2-step low temperature plasma processed austenitic stainless steels was enhanced more than that in the untreated austenitic stainless steels due to a high concentration of N on the surface.

  • In the present study, tin-zinc alloys were coated on a cold-rolled steel sheet with variations of electrolyte concentration, additives quantity and current density employing the Hull cell and circulation cell simulator. With an addition of additives of 2m1/L, tin-zinc deposits containing 10 to 40 percent Zn revealed a good surface appearance with weak acidic electrolytes. The organic additives suppressed the Sn deposition rate and thus increased the zinc contents in tin-zinc coating layers. The zinc contents in the tin-zinc coating layers depended almost linearly on the concentrations of metal ions of tin and zinc. Temperature of the electrolyte affected the composition tin-zinc coating layer. However, the concentration of complexants revealed little effectiveness. The surface morphology of tin-zinc coating showed dense tin and zinc phases with fine equiaxed grains with the high current density.

  • This study is to research on two phase printing method by use of colorants extracted from sappan wood. As for the research, printing effect of printing paste, streaming time, optimal mordant concentration, change of surface color and colorfastness were measured. This experiment showed that modified starch were best on surface color among the modified starch, sodium-alginate, guar gum. And the surface color was best when the steaming time was 60 minutes, mordant concentration 8%(ow.f). And for colorfastness experiment, colorfastness to drycleaning was good, but colorfastness to light and colorfastness to washing showed no desirable result.

  • Antimicrobial powder was made by exchanging silver ion on calcined oyster shell. On the purpose of application to water clarifier, bail-type media mixed with antimicrobial powder and $0{\sim}30%$ white kaoline were made. The sterilization effect, pore size distribution and zeta potential was tested to indicate the condition for the media of water clarifier. From these tests, it was confirmed that this media have an excellent sterilization power on $G^-\;and\;G^+$ germs. As the concentration of the exchanged silver ion increased, the surface charge density of the anions on the surface of the media also increased. The surface pore size decreased with the concentration of silver ion and 20% more white kaoline ratio. Consequently, mixing ratio of white kaoline would appear to indicate the optimun condition as media have sterilization power.

  • The surface tension of solutions of synthesized ammonium caprylate and ammonium caprate was measured by the ring method. The changes with of surface tension of solution of ammonium caprylate showed evidently that the salt had the critical micelle concentration(c.m.c.) at $30^{\circ}C$. The c.m.c. values of above two salts were determined from the change of surface tension of solution with concentration at various temperatures. The temperature dependence of the c.m.c. and the influence of addition of excess ammonia on the c.m.c. were also investigated.

  • Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 was grown in BHIB medium supplemented with $Mn^{2+}$ for 96 h at $37^{\circ}C$ in a shaker incubator. After removing the microbial biomass, a lipopeptide biosurfactant was extracted from the supernatant. Its structure was established by chemical and spectroscopy methods. The structure was confirmed by physical properties, such as Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance (HLB), surface activity and erythrocyte hemolytic capacity. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) and erythrocyte hemolytic capacity of the biosurfactant were compared to those of surfactants such as SDS, BC (benzalkonium chloride), TTAB (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) and HTAB (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide). The maximum hemolytic effect for all surfactants mentioned was observed at concentrations above cmc. The maximum hemolytic effect of synthetic surfactants was more than that of the biosurfactant produced by B. subtilis ATCC 6633. Therefore, biosurfactant would be considered a suitable surface-active agent due to low toxicity to the membrane.

  • Numerical analysis is done to investigate which would be the most influencing process parameter in determining the uniformity of deposition thickness in TiN ICP-CVD(inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition). Two configurations of ICP antenna are modeled; side and top planar. Side and top gas inlets are considered with each ICP antenna geometries. Precursor for TiN deposition was TDMAT(Tetrakis Diethyl Methyl Amido Titanium). Two step volume dissociation of TDMAT is used and absorption, desorption and deposition surface reactions are included. Most influencing factors are H and N concentration dissociated by electron impact collisions in plasma volume which depends on the relative positions of gas inlet and ICP antenna generated hot plasma region. Low surface recombination of N shows hollow type concentration, but H gives a bell type distribution. Film thickness at substrate edges is sensitive to gas flow rate and at high pressures getting more dependent on flow characteristics.

  • In this study, the corrosion resistance and adhesion of electrophoretic paint (E-paint) were studied on AZ31 magnesium alloy pretreated in cerium chemical conversion coating solutions with the addition of various ethanol concentrations. It was found that with increasing ethanol concentration from 0 to 90 percent can decrease the formation of $Mg(OH)_2/MgO$ and increase the formation of nano-crystalline cerium oxides on the coating. Both corrosion resistance and adhesion of E-painted AZ31 increased with increasing ethanol concentration. The best E-paint sample was observed on the sample pretreatment in cerium chemical conversion coating solution with the addition of 80 percent of ethanol. This sample showed an excellent adhesion without paint detached after water immersion test for 500 h at $40^{\circ}C$, and only a few blisters observed at the near scratched sites after 1000 h salt-spray test.

  • In order to observe the pattern forming of copper plate and chemical corrosion reaction, a study on the effect of the process parameters on the formation of micro-pattern by a photochemical etching of copper plate was carried out. The results are as follows : 1) Etching rate increases as the concentration of etchant increases under the regular condition of the temperature by the increasing of diffusion rate to surface. 2) Etching rate increases as the temperature of etchant increases by the fast acting of the material delivery of diffusion to surface under the regular condition of concentration. 3) It was found that etching speed increases as the material delivery of convection rising increased when the aeration speed of etchant increases. This result was from the fact acted by the material delivery of convection rising rather than material delivery of diffusion to the surface.

  • Multilayered silicon cantilever beams as interconnection systems for bare chip burn-in socket applications have been designed, fabricated and characterized. Fabrication processes of the beam are employing standard semiconductor processes such as thin film processes and epitaxial layer growth and silicon wet etching techniques. We investigated silicon etch rate in 1-3-10 etchant as functions of doping concentration, surface mechanical stress and crystal defects. The experimental results indicate that silicon etch rate in 1-3-10 etchant is strong functions of doping concentration and crystal defect density rather than surface mechanical stress. We suggested the new fabrication processes of multilayered silicon cantilever beams.
