Formation of hydrophilic polymer films by DC-plasma of monomer and reactive gases

  • In the field of material science, the interests and efforts to modify the surface of materials in agreement with the need of usage have been extensively increasing. he modification to improve the wettability of surface is very important is terms of adhesion, printing, etc. It is very difficult to modify metal surface into hydrophilic one. therefore, surfactant coating has been generally used in many cases. However, surfactant has disadvantages such as environmental problem, soluble in water. in this study, hydrophilic polymer films as alternative of surfactant were deposited on metal substrate by DC plasma polymerization. Hydrophilic polymer films deposited by DC plasma show many merits such as good wettability, stone adhesion to substrate, high resistance to most chemicals. Monomer gas and reactive gas were used as source plasma polymerization. Plasma polymerized films were fabricated with process parameters of deposition time, ratio of gas mixture, current, pressure, etc. Effects of these variables on wettability of plasma polymer films will be discussed. With XPS and FT-IR analyses of plasma polymeric films, the relation between wettability and chemical state of polymer films by DC plasma was investigated.

Effects of Oxygen Plasma Treatment on the Wettability of Polypropylene Fabrics

  • The objective of this study is to give PP(polypropylene) fabric a good affinity for water. Oxygen plasma was treated to PP fabrics in a commercial glow discharge reactor with different RF power, discharge pressure, and reaction time. The PP fiber surfaces were characterized by the measurement of contact angle and ESCA. A JEOL scanning electron microscope was used to observe the surface morphology of fibers. The spontaneous water uptake amount of PP fabrics was determined by the demand wettability test. To determine the effect of aging on the surface properties of $O_2$ plasma treated PP, all the above measurements of the samples were carried out after 1, 7, 30, 60, and 150 days. The results are as follows. The PP fiber surfaces treated by $O_2$ plasma treatment have a chemical composition that consisted of various oxygen containing polar groups. Consequently, the contact angles of the treated PP fibers decreased, which improved the water uptake rate of PP fabrics. Surface roughness of the treated PP affected the fabric wettabiity as well. Wettability of the treated PP decreased and leveled off with aging. The $O_2$ plasma treatment is a simple and effective method to increase the water uptake rate of PP fabrics.

상어 표피 모사 리블렛 구조의 젖음성 평가 (Wettability of Biomimetic Riblet Surface like Sharkskin)

  • Shark skin has functionalities such as self-cleaning and antifouling; it also exhibits excellent drag reduction owing to a hierarchical structure of microgrooves and nanometer-long chain mucus drag reduction interfaces around the shark body. In this study, the wettability of a shark skin surface and its replicas are evaluated. First, a shark skin template is taken from a real shark. Then, shark skin replicas are produced directly from a shark skin template, using a micromolding technique. The quantitative replication precision of the shark skin replicas is evaluated by comparing the geometry of the shark skin template to the replica using 2D surface profiles. Contact angles at the solid-air-water interfaces are evaluated for the shark skin template and its replicas under two conditions: with and without hydrophobic coating. The results show that the microriblets on shark skin improve the hydrophobic feature and play a critical role in self-cleaning.

저잔사 플럭스를 사용한 플로우 솔더링부의 젖음성 및 결함거동에 관한 연구 (A Study on Wettability and Defects Behavior of Flow-soldered Joint using Low Residue Flux)

  • Effects of non-cleaning and cleaning fluxes on the wetting properties and defects at flow soldered joints were investigated. Non-cleaning flux (R-type of 3.3% solid content) and cleaning flux (RMA-type of 15% solid content) were used. Wetting test was accomplished by wetting balance method with changing surface state of wetting specimen, CU. Sn-37%Pb solder was used for wetting test and flow soldering. As experimental results, the wetting time for vertical force from the surface tension being zero was mainly affected by surface state of the wetting specimen. Non-cleaning flux had a good wettability compared with cleaning flux. In case of non-cleaning flux, conveyor speed had a great affection to defects of bridge, icicle, and poor solder.

A Study on the Thermal Oxidation and Wettability of Lead-free Solders of Sn-Ag-Cu and Sn-Ag-Cu-In

  • The surface oxidation mechanism of lead-free solder alloys has been investigated with multiple reflow using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the solder surface of Sn-Ag-Cu-In solder alloy is surrounded by a thin $InO_x$ layer after reflow process; this coating protects the metallic surface from thermal oxidation. Based on this result, we have performed a wetting balance test at various temperatures. The Sn-Ag-Cu-In solder alloy shows characteristics of both thermal oxidation and wetting balance better than those of Sn-Ag-Cu solder alloy. Therefore, Sn-Ag-Cu-In solder alloy is a good candidate to solve the two problems of easy oxidation and low wettability, which are the most critical problems of Pb-free solders.

IF 고강도 합금화 용융아연도금강판의 표면품질에 미치는 합금원소의 영향 (Effect of Alloy Elements on Galvannealed Coating Quality in IF High Strength Steels)

  • The effect of the alloy elements(Si/Mn) ratio on the coating quality including wettabilty with molten zinc, galvannealing kinetics and crater has been investigated in interstitial-free high strength steel(IFHSS) containing Si and Mn. When the Si/Mn ratio was below 0.75, IF-HSS exhibited a good wettability leading to a good galvannealed coating quality after annealing at $800^{\circ}C$ for 40s in $15%H_2-N_2$ mixed gas with dew point $-60^{\circ}C$. In contrast, the wettability and galvannealed coating quality were deteriorated in the Si/ Mn ratio above 0.75. It is shown that they have relevance to oxides forms by selective oxidation on the steel surface. The oxide particles dispersed on the steel surface with a surface coverage of below 40% resulted in good wettability and galvannealed coating quality. The oxide particle is mainly consisted of $Mn_2SiO_4$ with low contact angle in molten zinc. On the other hand, the continuous oxide layer on the steel surface, such as network- and film-type,caused to poor wettability and galvannealed coating quality. The coverage of oxide layer was above 80%, and its chemical species was $SiO_2$ with high contact angle in molten zinc. Consequently, the Si/Mn alloy ratio played an importance role in galvannealed coating quality of IF-HSS.

폴리프로필렌 복합소재의 아르곤 플라즈마 처리로 표면층 제거와 젖음성 향상 (Improvement of Wettability and Removal of Skin Layer on Ar-Plasma-Treated Polypropylene Blend Surface)

  • 아르곤(Ar) 플라즈마 처리된 폴리프로필렌 복합소재의 표면 개질 및 특성 변화를 X-선 광전자 분광 분석(XPS), 적외선 분광 분석(FTIR), 주사 전자 현미경 분석(SEM) 및 접촉각 측정 등을 이용하여 조사하였다. Ar 플라즈마 처리 시간의 증가는 폴리프로필렌 복합소재 표면의 젖음성, 극성 관능기를 갖는 산소 성분, 탈크 함량 및 표면조도의 증가를 초래하였다. 주사 전자 현미경 분석을 통한 자세한 관찰은 폴리프로필렌 성분으로 구성된 표면층(skin layer)이 존재함을 확인하였다. 폴리프로필렌과 고무 입자간의 점도차는 표면층의 생성을 촉진시켰다. 하지만 Ar 플라즈마 처리시간의 증가는 표면층의 두께를 감소시키는 것을 확인하였다. 사출성형 공정 동안, 표면층을 제거할 수 있는 추가적인 방법론에 대해서도 토의하였다. Ar 플라즈마 처리에 의한 표면 개질 및 모폴로지의 변화는 폴리프로필렌 복합소재 표면 상에 친수화 상태를 부여하고, 이에 따라 젖음성 향상을 유도하였다.

바닥재 마모에 따른 미끄럼 저항 변화 (The Variation of the Slip Resistance with Wear of Floor)

  • All most of floors can become less slip resistant with wear. The deterioration of slip resistance can often occur rapidly. So relatively new products can become hazardous within a short period of time. The main objective of this study was the comparison of slip resistance variations caused by traffic wear and accelerative wear. The second objective was to ascertain the effect of wear, and to find out the causes of slip resistance change. Although statistical differences were observed between results of traffic wear and accelerative wear, the trend of the variations of slip resistance caused by traffic wear and accelerative wear was very similar. The measured slip resistance of tested floor changed up to 29%(and 26.5%) after 100,000 steps(and 750 cycles). As the traffic wear and accelerative wear were progressed, the surface roughness of the tested floor became smoother, and so the floor became more slippery under the wet condition. The abraded(worn out) floor surface tended to become hydrophilic surface, while the new floor surface tended to show hydrophobic nature. This phenomenon would change the wettability of floor surface, and the wettability would affect the variation of slip resistance.

  • 고분자 생체재료에서 세포부착과 성장은 재료의 적심성, 화학구조, 표면전하 및 거칠기 등의 표면 성질에 의존한다. 본 연구에서는 저밀도 폴리에틸렌 필름 (LDPE)의 표면 적심성과 골수유래 줄기세포의 증식 및 성장성을 측정하기 위하여 플라즈마 처리를 실시하였으며 개질된 필름 표면의 특성을 조사하였다. 또한 LDPE 필름에서의 세포부착과 증식률은 세포수 관찰과 역전사 중합효소 연쇄반응으로 확인하였다. 표면성질의 하나인 물 접촉각 측정 결과 플라즈마 처리 시간이 길어짐에 따라 필름표면의 접촉각이 감소하였으며 암형성 유전자와 암억제 유전자의 발현률이 60∼70$^{\circ}$ 사이에서 높음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 세포수 관찰을 통해 접촉각이 60∼70$^{\circ}$인 표면에서 세포 증식률이 우수하여 표면성질이 세포의 성장과 분화에 중요함을 확인하였다.

칩 온 보드 패키지 적용을 위한 프리프레그 표면 잔류 불순물이 봉지재의 젖음성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of the Residual Impurity on the Prepreg Surface on the Wettability of Encapsulant for Chip on Board Package)

  • 칩 온 보드(chip on board) 패키지 적용을 위해 프리프레그(prepreg) 표면에 잔류하는 불순물이 봉지재(encapsulant)의 젖음성에 미치는 영향을 규명하기 위해 전자현미경(scanning electron microscope)과 X-선 광전자 분광기(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy)를 이용하여 미세구조, 조성 및 화학 결합을 분석하였다. 프리프레그 표면에 잔류 불순물이 존재하는 시편의 경우 잔류 불순물이 존재하지 않는 시편보다 접촉각이 28° 높게 측정되었으며, C-O 결합은 4% 낮게 도출되었다. 이는 공정 중 잔류 불순물인 Na, F이 프리프레그 표면에 존재하는 C와 화학 반응을 하여 C-F 결합 생성으로 인해 프리프레그 표면의 C-O 결합이 끊어지면서 프리프레그 표면에너지가 낮아지게 되고 이로 인해 접촉각이 증가하게 되면서 봉지재의 젖음성이 저하되는 것으로 판단된다.
