A three-dimensional time-dependent coastal ocean model experiment of two different turbulence parameterizations is conducted. One of the turbulence parameterization is the constant eddy-mixing formulation, C1, and the other a stratification dependent eddy-mixing formulation, C2. The flow in C2 in strongly baroclinic, and limits vertical mixing of fresh and saline waters. The outflow discharged from an estuary is highly inertial and form a strong front of plume in C2 than that in C1. Because of the stronger outflow in C2, supercritical flow state, for which the near surface outflow velocity exceeds the baroclinic phase speed, can exist off the mouth of the estuary. The adjustment process of flow in the less saline waters are quite different for C1 and C2, which is dictated by the strongly baroclinic nature of the flow in C2.
This study investigates characteristics of wintertime simulation conducted by METRI AGCM utilizing new radiation parameterization scheme. New radiation scheme is based on the method of Chou et al., and is utilized in the METRI AGCM recently. In order to analyze characteristics of seasonal simulation in boreal winter, hindcast dataset from 1979 to 2005 is produced in two experiments - control run (CTRL) and new model's run (RADI). Also, changes in performance skill and predictability due to implementation of new radiation scheme are examined. In the wintertime simulation, the RADI experiment tends to reduce warm bias in the upper troposphere probably due to intensification of longwave radiative cooling over the whole troposphere. The radiative cooling effect is related to weakening of longitudinal temperature gradient, leading to weaker tropospheric jet in the upper troposphere. In addition, changes in vertical thermodynamic structure have an influence on reduction of tropical precipitation. Moreover, the RADI case is less sensitive to variation of tropical sea surface temperature than the CTRL case, even though the RADI case simulates the mean climate pattern well. It implies that the RADI run does not have significant improvement in seasonal prediction point of view.

Accurate prediction of sea water temperature has been emphasized to make precise local weather forecast and to understand change of ecosystem. The Yellow Sea, which has turbid water and strong tidal current, is an unique shallow marginal sea. It is essential to include the effects of the turbidity and the strong tidal mixing for the realistic simulation of temperature distribution in the Yellow Sea. Evaluation of ocean circulation model response to vertical mixing scheme and turbidity is primary objective of this study. Three-dimensional ocean circulation model(Regional Ocean Modeling System) was used to perform numerical simulations. Mellor- Yamada level 2.5 closure (M-Y) and K-Profile Parameterization (KPP) scheme were selected for vertical mixing parameterization in this study. Effect of Jerlov water type 1, 3 and 5 was also evaluated. The simulated temperature distribution was compared with the observed data by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute to estimate model's response to turbidity and vertical mixing schemes in the Yellow Sea. Simulations with M-Y vertical mixing scheme produced relatively stronger vertical mixing and warmer bottom temperature than the observation. KPP scheme produced weaker vertical mixing and did not well reproduce tidal mixing front along the coast. However, KPP scheme keeps bottom temperature closer to the observation. Consequently, numerical ocean circulation simulations with M-Y vertical mixing scheme tends to produce well mixed vertical temperature structure and that with KPP vertical mixing scheme tends to make stratified vertical temperature structure. When Jerlov water type is higher, sea surface temperature is high and sea bottom temperature is low because downward shortwave radiation is almost absorbed near the sea surface.

The southeastern coastal area of the Korean peninsula has a complex terrain including an irregular coastline and moderately high mountains. This implies that mesoscale circulations such as mountain-valley breeze and land-sea breeze can play an important role in wind field and ocean forcing. In this study, to improve the accuracy of complex coastal rind field(surface wind and sea surface wind), we carried out the sensitivity experiments based on PBL schemes in PSU/NCAR Mesoscale Model (MM5), which is being used in the operational system at Korea Meteorological Administration. Four widely used PBL parameterization schemes in sensitivity experiments were chosen: Medium-Range Forecast (MRF), High-resolution Blackadar, Eta, and Gayno-Seaman scheme. Thereafter, case(2004. 8. 26 - 8. 27) of weak-gradient flows was simulated, and the time series and the vertical profiles of the simulated wind speed and wind direction were compared with those of hourly surface observations (AWS, BUOY) and QuikSCAT data. In the simulated results, the strength of rind speed of all schemes was overestimated in complex coastal regions, while that of about four different schemes was underestimated in islands and over the sea. Sea surface wind using the Eta scheme showed the highest wind speed over the sea and its distribution was similar to the observational data. Horizontal distribution of the simulated wind direction was very similar to that of real observational data in case of all schemes. Simulated and observed vertical distribution of wind field was also similar under boundary layer(about 1 km), however the simulated wind speed was underestimated in upper layer.
In this paper, a robust controller is proposed to achieve the accurate tracking for uncertain robot manipulators with hydraulic actuator dynamics. The parameter uncertainty can be quantified by the linear parameterization technique. A switching controller is proposed to guarantee the global asymptotic stability of the plant. In order to eliminate the chattering caused by the switching controller, a smoothing controller is proposed using the boundary layer technique around the sliding surface. It is shown that the smoothing controller guarantees the uniform ultimate boundedness of the tracking, error. The proposed controller shows good better tracking performance.

In this paper, a 3D shape optimization algorithm which guarantees a smooth optimal shape is presented using parameterized sensitivity analysis. The design surface is parameterized using Bezier spline and B-spline, and the control points of the spline are taken as the design variables. The parameterized sensitivity for the control points are found from that for nodal points. The design sensitivity and adjoint variable formulae are also derived for the 3D non-linear problems. Through an application to the shape optimization of 3D electromagnet to get a uniform magnetic field, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is shown.

Soil moisture is significantly related to crop growth and plays an important role in irrigation management. To predict soil moisture, various process-based model has been developed and used in the world. Various models (Land surface model) may have different performance depending on the model parameters and structures that causes the different model output for the same modeling condition. In this study, the three land surface models (Noah Land Surface Model, Soil Water Atmosphere Plant, Community Land Model) were used to compare the model performance (soil moisture prediction) and develop the multi-model simulation. At first, the genetic algorithm was used to estimate the optimal soil parameters for each model, and the parameters were used to predict soil moisture in the study area. Then, we used the multi-model approach based on Bayesian model averaging (BMA). The results derived from this approach showed a better match to the measurements than the results from the original single land surface model. In addition, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the single model and utilizing multi-model methods can help to increase the accuracy of soil moisture prediction.
The aerodynamic resistance($R_a$) to vertical transfer in the surface boundary layer can be formulated in terms of the friction velocity, height of observation, vertical heat flux and surface roughness. Unlike previous studies which focused on the role of $R_c$, present study perform additional tests using a variety of $R_a$ formulae. Several $R_a$ formulations available in the literature, suitable for unstable conditions, were tested for their influence on the dry deposition velocity. The canopy resistance($R_c$) determines the shape of the diurnal pattern, while a small amplitude diurnal cycle in $V_d$ was attributed to the aerodynamic resistance. The aerodynamic resistance is the major contributor to the formation of spikes in nighttime and $R_a$ is relatively important at night because the canopy resistance is smaller. All formulations show similar diurnal cycle and yield good agreement with the observations. Although present $V_d$ formulations are suitable for numerical air qualify models, the research must continue for further improvements in resistance parametrizations.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of physical parameterization on the simulation of a snowfall event over Korea caused by air-mass transformation by using the PSU/NCAR MM5. A heavy snowfall event over Korea during 3-5 January 2003 is selected. In addition to the control experiments employing simple-ice microphysics scheme, MRF PBL scheme, and original surface layer process, three consequent physics sensitivity experiments are performed. Each experiment exchanges microphysics (Reisner Graupel), boundary layer (YSU PBL) schemes, and revised surface layer process with a reduced thermal roughness length for the control run. The control run reproduces an overall pattern of snowfall over Korea, but with a high bias by a factor of about 2. As revealed in the previous studies, the cloud microphysics and PBL parameterizations do not show a significant sensitivity for the case of snowfall. A more sophisticated cloud processes does not reveal a discernible effect on the simulated snowfall. Further, high bias in snowfall is exaggerated when a more realistic PBL scheme is employed. On the other hand, it is found that the revised surface layer process plays a role in improving the prediction of snowfall by reducing it. Thus, it is found that a realistic design of surface layer physics in mesoscale models is an important factor to the reduction of systematic bias of the snowfall over Korea that is caused by air-mass transformation over the Yellow sea.

We focus on the improvement in the simulation of sea surface wind over complex coastal area located in the southeastern Korea. In this study, it was carried out sensitivity experiment based on PBL schemes and dynamic frame of MM5 and WRF. Two widely used PBL parameterization schemes were chosen : Medium-Range Forecast (MRF) and Mellor-Yamada-Janjic (MYJ). Thereafter, two cases of sea fog days with weak wind speed and typhoon days with strong wind speed were simulated and analyzed. The result of experiments indicated that wind fold of WRF model was shown more similar distribution with observational data, compared with that of MM5. Simulation of sea surface wind during sea fog days with weak wind speed and typhoon days with strong wind speed were shown similar horizontal distribution with observational data using MYJ and MRF PBL schemes of WRF model, respectively. Horizontal distribution of sea surface wind was more sensitive according to dynamic frame and PBL Schemes of model during sea fog days and typhoon days, respectively.
