  • The crystal grains of polycrystalline diamond vary depending on deposition conditions and growth thickness. The diamond thin film deposited by the CVD method has a very rough growth surface. On average, the surface roughness of a diamond thin film deposited by CVD is in the range of 1-100 um. However, the high surface roughness of diamond is unsuitable for application in industrial applications, so the surface roughness must be lowered. As the surface roughness decreases, the scattering of incident light is reduced, the heat conduction is improved, the mechanical surface friction coefficient can be lowered, and the transmittance can also be improved. In addition, diamond-coated cutting tools have the advantage of enabling ultra-precise machining. In this study, the surface roughness of diamond was improved by thermal diffusion reaction between diamond carbon atoms and ferrous metals at high temperature for diamond thin films deposited by MPCVD.

  • Recently, from general machine parts and automobile parts using carbon steel to a mold, there has been efforts for improving durability and attrition resistance of these parts. Especially, heat treatment with laser which works fast and automatically can be used for the mass production with high quality. Moreover, local heat treatment can be used to handle with complex and precise parts. Accordingly, we analyzed hardening characteristics of carbon steel using the finite element method and compare the experimental results to have more reliability. We also proved the cause of thermal deformation with temperature and stress distribution by heat treatment. After these analysis and experimental, we found that each maximum hardness of the two tests was 728 Hv and 700 Hv, on condition of $1050^{\circ}C$ heating temperature, and 2 mm/sec laser speed. We also found that difference of surface stress-distribution was occurred, and this makes deformation mode up after heat treatment.

  • Heat treatment with carburized quenching process is widely used for automotive helical gear to improve its surface properties of hardness and strength. However, the gear can be deformed with the process over the allowable tolerance, which possibly makes noise, vibration and heat problems in operation. In this study, deformation of helical gear during heat treatment of carburized quenching was analyzed with a numerical method, incorporating coupled calculations of thermal conduction, carbon diffusion, phase transformation and thermal stresses. With the analysis, the effect of coolant temperature in quenching on the deformation was investigated. The result of the analysis revealed that the higher the coolant temperature became, the more change of helix angle and the more compressive stresses in the surface generated, because of delayed generation of martensite in the part.

  • When high carbon steel is heated in an appropriate austenizing temperature range and subjected to austempering, the size and shape of lamellar structure can be controlled. The high carbon steel sheet having the pearlite structure has excellent elastic characteristics because it has strong restoring force when properly rolled, and is applied in a process known as patenting-process using lead bath. In the case of isothermal treatment using lead-medium, it is possible to quickly reach a uniform temperature due to high heat transfer characteristics, but it is difficult to replace it with process technology that requires treatment to remove harmfulness lead. In this study, we intend to develop fluidization technology using garnet powder to replace the lead medium. After heating the high-carbon steel, the cooling rate was changed by compressed air to the vicinity of the nose of the continuous cooling curve, and then maintained for 90 s and then exposed to room temperature. The microstructure of the treated specimens were analyzed and compared with the existing products treated with lead bath. The higher the flow rate of compressed air, the faster the cooling rate to the pearlite transformation temperature, so lamellar spacing decreases and the hardness tends to increase.

  • Although precise temperature control in the heat treatment process is a key factor in process reliability, there are many cases where there is no separate heat source control optimization system in the field. To solve this problem, the program monitors the temperature data according to the heat source change through sensor communication in a recursive method based on multiple variables that affect the process, and the target heat source value and the actual heat treatment heat source to match the internal air temperature and material temperature. A control optimization system was constructed. Through this study, the error rate between the target temperature and the atmosphere (material surface) temperature of around 10.7% with the existing heat source control method was improved to an improved result of around 0.1% using a process optimization algorithm and system.

  • The performances of solar collectors with single and double evacuated tube were experimentally compared. The solar collector with single evacuated tube using surface treatment in this study consists of radiation fin, heat pipe, absorber plate, glass tube, cap and regulating valve, and so on. Surface treatment was conducted for heat pipe and absorber plate with black chrome plating and copper black coating. As the results, the performance of solar collector with single evacuated tube using surface treatment showed good results compared that of double evacuated tube. Absorber plate played a positive role in performance and showed increase of about 28%. Further performance depends on vacuum degree and vacuum degree has to be considered economical efficiency in solar collector.

  • In thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems, the life of the coating depends on thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer because most of the failure of TBCs occurs when TGO growth increases. In order to inhibit TGO growth, process was additionally carried out before the heat treatment of the TBC coating layer at $1200^{\circ}C$ in air. In the additional process, heat treatment in vacuum furnace of < $10^{-5}$ torr was conducted for 7 h and 14 h before the heat treatment. The area and length of TGO, as well as the crack length in the TBC were characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The TGO thickness and crack of specimens pre-heat treated in vacuum furnace were reduced by 45% compare to those heat treated in furnace. Consequently, pre-heat treatment in a vacuum furnace process lead to effective inhibition of growth of the TGO.

  • The properties of $Cr_2O_3-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ composite oxide coatings on steel surface were investigated. The results obtained were as follows: The microhardness of oxide coating layer increased with increasing heat-treatment temperature and $Cr_2O_3$ content in coating layer. The hardness showed the highest value (850Hv) treated at 700$^{\circ}C$ for $SiO_2:Al_2O_3:Cr_2O_3$=1:1:4. Increasing heat-treatment temperature, corrosion current density became lower and coating layer became denser. The corrosion current density showed the lowest value $(6.5{\times}10^{-5}\;Acm^2)$ treated at 750$^{\circ}C\;for\;SiO_2:Al_2O_3:Cr_2O_3$=1:1:3. These results were explained by protective layer which was formed during heat-treatment. The bonding between matrix and coating layer is expected to be made mechanically and chemically by the inter diffusion of Ni and Fe. The composite oxide coating was formed by softening of the binder with increasing heat-treatment temperature. The strengthening of coating layer is to be resulted from the dispersion of major oxide particles.
