An investigation into the detailed safety diagnosis report indicates that domestic highway bridges mainly suffer from defects, deterioration, and damage due to physical forces. In particular, deterioration is an inevitable damage that occurs due to various environmental and external factors over time. In particular, bridge deck is very vulnerable to cracks, which occur along with various types of damages such as rebar corrosion and surface delamination. Thus, this study evaluates a correlation between heterogeneous damage and deterioration environment and then identifies the main causes of such heterogeneous damage. After all, a bridge heterogeneous damage prediction model was developed using random forests to determine the top five factors contributing to the occurrence of the heterogeneous damage. The results of the study would serve as a basic data for estimating bridge maintenance and budget.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the inter-laminar fracture toughness characteristics of CFRP pultrusion spar cap materials reinforced with non-woven glass fabric. Test specimens were fabricated by the infusion technique. A non-woven glass fabric and artificial defects were embedded on the middle surface between two pultruded CFRP panels. Double cantilever beam (DCB) and End Notched Flexure (ENF) tests were performed according to ASTM standards. Fracture toughness and crack propagation characteristics were evaluated with load-displacement curves and delamination resistance curves (R-Curve). The fracture toughness results were calculated by compliance calibration (CC) method. The initiation and propagation values of Mode-I critical strain energy release rate value GIc were 1.357 kJ/m2 and 1.397 kJ/m2, respectively, and Mode-II critical strain energy release rate values GIIc were 4.053 kJ/m2 for non-precracked test and 4.547 kJ/m2 for precracked test. It was found that the fracture toughness properties of the CFRP pultrusion spar-cap are influenced by the interface between the layers of CFRP and glass fiber non-woven.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of surface treatment and composition of reinforcement material on fracture strength of fiber reinforced composite inlay bridges. The materials used for this study were I-beam, U-beam TESCERA ATL system and ONE STEP(Bisco, IL, USA). Two kinds of surface treatments were used; the silane and the sandblast. The specimens were divided into 11 groups through the composition of reinforcing materials and the surface treatments. On the dentiform, supposing the missing of Maxillary second pre-molar and indirect composite inlay bridge cavities on adjacent first pre-molar disto-occlusal cavity, first molar mesio-occlusal cavity was prepared with conventional high-speed inlay bur. The reinforcing materials were placed on the proximal box space and build up the composite inlay bridge consequently. After the curing, specimen was set on the testing die with ZPC. Flexural force was applied with universal testing machine (EZ-tester; Shimadzu, Japan). at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min until initial crack occurred. The data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA/Scheffes post-hoc test at 95% significance level. Groups using I-beam showed the highest fracture strengths (p<0.05) and there were no significant differences between each surface treatment (p>0.05) Most of the specimens in groups that used reinforcing material showed delamination. 1. The use of I-beam represented highest fracture strengths (p<0.05) 2. In groups only using silane as a surface treatment showed highest fracture strength, but there were no significant differences between other surface treatments (p>0.05). 3. The reinforcing materials affect the fracture strength and pattern of composites inlay bridge. 4 The holes at the U-beam did not increase the fracture strength of composites inlay bridge.

In this study, homogeneous and defect-free ceramic ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated by using the sol-gel method. A boehmite sol was synthesized and coated onto the surface of alumina hollow fiber microfiltration membranes. The effect of sol viscosity and surface tension on the coating layer homogeneity and thickness was investigated. The optimum coating repetition using pristine sol was determined to be 3 times, as the samples coated more than 4 times showed delamination. Fixing the coating repetition to 3 times, the effect of sintering temperature was also studied in this work. The samples sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ exhibited the highest pure water permeability with the molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of approximately 51 kDa (10 nm dextran), and the samples sintered at 600, $800^{\circ}C$ displayed the MWCO of 12 kDa (5 nm dextran). The ultrafiltration membranes prepared in this work showed competitive performance compared to the reported ceramic ultrafiltration membranes.

With respect to the durability of large scale ($150cm^2$) membrane electrode assembly (MEA) of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), degradation phenomena at cathode is monitored and analyzed according to the position on the cathode surface. After constant current mode operation of large scale MEA for 500 hr, the MEA is divided into three parts along the cathode channel; (close to) inlet, middle, and (close to) outlet. The performance of each MEA is tested and it is revealed that the MEA from the cathode outlet of large MEA shows the worst performance. This is due to the catalyst degradation and GDL delamination caused by flooding at cathode outlet of large MEA during the 500 hr operation. Particularly on the catalyst degradation, the loss of electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of catalyst gets worse along the cathode channel from inlet to outlet, of which the reason is believed to be loss of catalysts by dissolution and migration rather than their agglomeration. The extent of loss in the performance and catalyst degradation has strong relation to the cathode flooding and it is required to develop proper water management techniques and separator channel design to control the flooding.
Three formulations were used to prepare the cellulose-based edible films consisting of hydrocolloid and lipids; film A made by coating method, films B and C by emulsion method, which were formed in a thin layer glass plate and then dried. Films A, B and C were all approximately 0.03 mm thick with 1-3% moisture, 59-68% lipid, and almost whitish color. Film A was better in tensile strength, and lipids affected water vapor permeability on three films, in which films A and B did not differ significantly. Water vapor permeability of film A did not change but those of films B and C decreased significantly after storage for 8 weeks at $-15^{\circ}C$. Oxygen transmission rate and oxygen permeability of films A and C did not differ and changed significantly after 8-week storage at $-15^{\circ}C$. Under scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation on the structural characteristics of each film, film A indicated relatively uniform and smooth surface coatings of beeswax, while films B and C had individual lipid crystals and could be discerned. As a result, film A was better than films B and C in respect of physical properties, but the selection of useful film depended upon which physical property was more functional. Moreover, it was desirable in some cases for using films B and C because of their easiness of preparation and cold storage durability. It will be further needed to investigate how to formulate films B and C to have more unique surface characteristics, and to reduce water vapor and oxygen transmission rates.

To prepare the Cu-based filler material indicating enhanced oxidation resistance property and Ag content, Ag-coated Cu particles was fabricated by Ag plating of 40 wt % on the spherical Cu particles with an average size of $2{\mu}m$ and their oxidation behavior was also evaluated. In the case that ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid was used alone, the fabricated particles frequently showed broken structures such as delamination at Ag shell/core Cu interface and hollow structure that are induced by excessive galvanic displacement reaction. As a result, fraction of defect particles increased up to 19.88% after the Ag plating of 40 wt.%. However, the fraction in the 40 wt.% Ag-coated Cu particles decreased to 9.01% and relatively smooth surface and dense microstructure in the Ag shell were also observed with additional usage of hydroquinone as a complexing agent. Ag-coated Cu particles having the enhanced microstructure did not show any weight increase by oxidation for exposure to air at $160^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, indicating increased oxidation resistance property.
Thin bonded continuously reinforced concrete overlay(CRCO) was constructed on He existing jointed plain concrete pavement(HCP) surface at Seo-Hae-Ahn express highway in South Korea in order to evaluate its applicability and performance. Two sections of road were considered for this evaluation. In the first section, the concrete overlayer was placed and cut down to the existing layer to form transverse joints while CRCO was constructed on top of the existing layer in the second section. Early strength concrete(Type III) was utilized for both overlay sections. The depth of milling and the thickness of overlaid layer were 5 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Several vibrating wire gauges(VWG) were installed to evaluate the performance of CRCO with respect to curling, delamination, and crack propagation. As a result of the strength test, it was found that strength of the material reaches the design criteria within 1-3 days. Analysis with vibrating wire gauge(VWG) showed CRCO effectively restricts joint movement. High adhesive strength also was observed from the material regardless of length of aging. Meanwhile, transverse cracks were observed on the middle of the section where JPCP overlay was applied whereas arbitrarily cracks in transverse direction were observed on the section where CRCP was applied.

When a high-energy ultrasound propagates through a solid body that contains a crack or a delamination, the two faces of the defect do not ordinarily vibrate in unison, and dissipative phenomena such as friction, rubbing and clapping between the faces will convert some of the vibrational energy to heat. By combining this heating effect with infrared imaging, one can detect a subsurface defect in material in real time. In this paper a realtime detection of the brazing defect of thin Inconel plates using the UIR (ultrasonic infrared imaging) technology is described. A low frequency (23 kHz) ultrasonic transducer was used to infuse the welded Inconel plates with a short pulse of sound for 280 ms. The ultrasonic source has a maximum power of 2 kW. The surface temperature of the area under inspection is imaged by an infrared camera that is coupled to a fast frame grabber in a computer. The hot spots, which are a small area around the bound between the two faces of the Inconel plates near the defective brazing point and heated up highly, are observed. And the weak thermal signal is observed at the defect position of brazed plate also. Using the image processing technology such as background subtraction average and image enhancement using histogram equalization, the position of defective brazing regions in the thin Inconel plates can be located certainly.

Commercialization of flexible OLED displays, such as rollable and foldable displays, has attracted tremendous interest in next-generation display markets. However, during bending deformation, cracking and delamination of thin films in the flexible display panels are the critical bottleneck for the commercialization. Therefore, measuring mechanical properties of the fragile thin films in the flexible display panels is essential to prevent mechanical failures of the devices. In this study, tensile properties of the metal and ceramic nano-thin films were quantitatively measured by using a direct tensile testing method on the water surface. Elastic modulus, tensile strength, and elongation of the sputtered Mo, MoTi thin films, and PECVD deposited SiNx thin films were successfully measured. As a result, the tensile properties were varied depending on the deposition conditions and the film thickness. The measured tensile property values can be applied to stress analysis modeling for mechanically robust flexible displays.
