  • Analysis of two-dimensional unsteady flows with a free surface in a rectangular container subject to a linear reciprocating force is performed by numerical and experimental methods. FVM is used for the numerical computation of the two-dimensional flows. We consider the surface tension as well as the viscous/elastic properties of the free surface. One-dimensional analysis as well as experiment is used in establishing the free surface properties. The steady recirculatory flow is visualized by a laser sheet. It is shown that the one-dimensional analysis provides useful informations associated with the free surface properties.

  • In this study, the optical properties of localized surface plasmon resonance sensor using optical fiber was analyzed as the variation of a size and surface density of gold nano particles on the etched optical fiber surface. It is shown that a size and surface density of gold nano particles on optical fiber surface are controlled by $Na_3$ citrate quantity and pH of gold colloid solution. To measure the sensitivity, peak wavelength of absorbance spectrum was detected as the reflective index of the solution. The sensor sensitivity is linearly dependent on the size and surface densities of gold nano particles from the results of optical experiments.

  • A series of $NiO-TiO_2$/$WO_3$ catalysts was prepared by drying powdered $Ni(OH)_2-Ti(OH)_4$ with ammonium metatungstate aqueous solution, followed by calcining in air at high temperature. Characterization of prepared catalysts was performed by using FTIR, Raman, XPS, XRD, and DSC and by measuring surface area. Upon the addition of tungsten oxide to titania up to 25 wt%, the specific surface area and acidity of catalysts increased in proportion to the tungsten oxide content due to the interaction between tungsten oxide and titania. Since the -$TiO_2$/stabilizes the tungsten oxide species, for the samples equal to or less than 25 wt%, tungsten oxide was well dispersed on the surface of titania, but for the samples containing above 25 wt%, the triclinic phase of $WO_3$ was observed at calcination temperature above 400 $^{\circ}C$. The catalytic activities of 10-NiO-$TiO_2$/$WO_3$ for 2-propanol dehydration and cumene dealkylation were correlated with the acidity of catalysts measured by ammonia chemisorption method. NiO may attract reactants and enhance the local concentration of reactants near the acid sites, consequently showing the increased catalytic activities.

  • The electrical characterization of Au islands on TiO2 at nanometer scale (as a Schottky nanodiode) has been studied with conductive atomic force microscopy in ultra-high vacuum. The diverse sizes of the Au islands were formed by using self-assembled patterns on n-type TiO2 semiconductor film using the Langmuir-Blodgett process. Local conductance images showing the current flowing through the TiN coated AFM probe to the surface of the Au islands on TiO2 was simultaneously obtained with topography, while a positive sample bias is applied. The boundary of the Au islands revealed a higher current flow than that of the inner Au islands in current AFM images, with the forward bias presumably due to the surface plasmon resonance. The nanoscale Schottky barrier height of the Au/TiO2 Schottky nanodiode was obtained by fitting the I-V curve to the thermionic emission equation. The local resistance of the Au/TiO2 nanodiode appeared to be higher at the larger Au islands than at the smaller islands. The results suggest that conductive atomic force microscopy can be used to reveal the I-V characterization of metal size dependence and the electrical effects of surface plasmon on a metal-semiconductor Schottky diode at nanometer scale.

  • Aging characteristics of 13 years service-aged distribution cable terminations which dismounted from 3 regions were investigated by material characterization and electrical test. All dismounted terminations have propagating micro-cracks on the surface of weathershed and chalking fillers from bulk. Elemental analysis of these terminations showed that the carbon was decreased and the oxygen was increased on the surface of weathershed due to a little oxidation reaction. Contact angle of terminations was abnormally increased with time. In the analysis of anti-oxidation ability and chemical structure, there were no differences between new and dismounted terminations. All terminations showed satisfactory results in electrical test. Therefore, itcan be considered that aging is only propagating on the surface of dismounted terminations. Also, it was confirmed that environmental factors such as UV, pollution and salt have an effect on the aging through the observation of polymer composition change.
