A study on acidity in fog, dew and frost was carried out. Samples were taken during May 1990-February 1991 at two sites in Chongwon, Choongbook. The acidity of dew and of fog collected from grass at site A was 4.89 and 5.46, respectively. Dew in summer showed very strong acidity. The volume of dew deposited on grass was much less than the volume of rain, but dew is effective to diffuse acid predursors and acid materials. Dew and fog can remove more effectively atmospheric acid materiasl deoposited on grass by diurnal turbulent motion rather than direct absorption of acid predursors and materials in the atmosphere. In a polluted area, acidic dew and fog can be occurred by the direct absorption and oxidation of acidic predursors in the atmosphere as well as the role of wet removal on grass surface. Acidity of frost collected on teflon surface showed little difference to acidity of dew and fog on teflon surface. This suggests a similar absorption mechanism of atmospheric precursors and materials into dew and frost in the atmosphere. Strong acidity in dew, fog and frost appeared to occur from local pollution sources of several ten kilometres. In particular, strong acidity in dew, fog, and frost together with acid rain can accelerate a damage in ecosystems. Discussion is made on scientific analyses and seasonal variations of acidity of fog, dew and frost. A mechanism on acidification of fog, dew and frost is also discussed.
Heavy metal fluoride glasses exhibit considerable promise as high transparency materials from the UV to the IR. These glasses are prepared by fusion of the mixture of metal fulorides($ZrF_4$, $BaF_2$, $LaF_3$ etc) at 800-1, 00$0^{\circ}C$ under the inert$(N_2)$ or reactive ($CCl_4$, $Cl_2$) atmosphere following the casting into glass on cooling. Infrared absorption at the 3, 400 cm-1 -OH peak has been measured as a function of thickness for several ZrF-$BaF_2$-LaF and $HfF_4$-$BaF_2$-$LaF_3$ glasses to separate contributions from bulk and surface -OH. For glasses melted under $CCl_4$ reactive atmosphere the peak is due almost entirely to surface-OH. and melting in a closed reactor was best for removing -OH. In ambient atmosphere the -OH peak exhibited no time dependence over a 30 d period indicating a very small rate of surface attack by atmospheric H2O. Removal of -OH absorption processing was generally easier and more complete for the $BaF_2$/ThF4-glasses than for the $ZrF_4$-or $HfF_4$-based glasses.
We analyzed the micro-meteorological characteristics during typical steam fog over the Gumi Reservoir of Nakdong river with the field observation data for recent 2 year(1 April 2013~31 March 2015) collected by the national institute of meteorological research, KMA. Steam fog occur when the cold drainage flows over the warm water surface. As the sensible and latent heat from water are provided to the air, the instability of lower atmosphere is increased. The resultant vertical mixing of warm, moist air near water surface and cold air aloft causes the formation of status cloud. The convection strengthened by radiative cooling of the upper part of the stratus causes the fog to propagate downward. Also, the temperature at the lowest atmosphere is increased rapidly and the inversion near surface disappear by these processes when the fog forms. The increase of wind speed is observed because the downward transportation of momentum is caused by vertical mixing.
This study develops a dual purpose: i) evaluating the effects of two different Mars atmosphere models (NASA Glenn and GRAM-2001) on aerodynamics of a capsule (Pathfinder) entering the Mars atmosphere, ii) verifying the feasibility of evaluating the ambient density and pressure by means of the methods by McLaughlin and Cassanto, respectively and therefore to re-build the values provided by the models. The method by McLaughlin relies on the evaluation of the capsule drag coefficient, the method by Cassanto relies on the measurement of pressure at a point on the capsule surface in aerodynamic shadow. The study has been carried out computationally by means of: i) a code integrating the equations of dynamics of the capsule for the computation of the entry trajectory, ii) a DSMC code for the solution of the flow field around the capsule in the altitude interval 50-100 km. The models show consistent differences at altitudes higher than about 40 km. It seems that the GRAM-2001 model is more reliable than the NASA Glenn model. In fact, the NASA Glenn model produces, at high altitude, temperatures that seem to be too low compared with those from the GRAM-2001 model and correspondingly very different aerodynamic conditions in terms of Mach, Reynolds and Knudsen numbers. This produces pretty different capsule drag coefficients by the two models as well as pressure on its surface, making not feasible neither the method by McLaughlin nor that by Cassanto, until a single, reliable model of the Mars atmosphere is not established. The present study verified that the implementation of the Cassanto method in Mars atmosphere should rely (such as it is currently) on pressure obtained experimentally in ground facilities.

Climate models, both global and regional, have increased in sophistication and are being run at increasingly higher resolutions. The Land Surface Models (LSMs) coupled to these climate models have evolved from simple bucket models to sophisticated Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (SVAT) schemes needed to support complex linkages and processes. However, some underpinnings of terrestrial hydrologic parameterizations so crucial in the predictions of surface water and energy fluxes cause model errors that often manifest as non-linear drifts in the dynamic response of land surface processes. This requires the improved parameterizations of key processes for the terrestrial hydrologic scheme to improve the model predictability in surface water and energy fluxes. The Common Land Model (CLM), one of state-of-the-art LSMs, is the land component of the Community Climate System Model (CCSM). However, CLM also has energy and water biases resulting from deficiencies in some parameterizations related to hydrological processes. This research presents the implementation of a selected set of parameterizations and their effects on the runoff prediction. The modifications consist of new parameterizations for soil hydraulic conductivity, water table depth, frozen soil, soil water availability, and topographically controlled baseflow. The results from a set of offline simulations are compared with observed data to assess the performance of the new model. It is expected that the advanced terrestrial hydrologic scheme coupled to the current CLM can improve model predictability for better prediction of runoff that has a large impact on the surface water and energy balance crucial to climate variability and change studies.
The surface reflectance is essential to retrieval various indicators related land properties such as vegetation index, albedo and etc. In this study, we estimated surface reflectance using Himawari-8 / Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) channel data. In order to estimate surface reflectance from Top of Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance, the atmospheric correction is necessary because all of the TOA reflectance from optical sensor is affected by gas molecules and aerosol in the atmosphere. We used Second Simulation of a Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum Vector (6SV) Radiative Transfer Model (RTM) to correct atmospheric effect, and Look-Up Table (LUT) to shorten the calculation time. We verified through comparison Himawri-8 / AHI surface reflectance and Proba-V S1 products. As a result, bias and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) are calculated about -0.02 and 0.05.
Factors influencing friction reduction with MODTP(molybdenum dialkyl dithiophosphate) lubricant were investigated through a frictioning experiment using two-cylinder edge surface frictioning tester and XPS surface analysis. The friction reduction effect gained with MoDTP lubricant appeared to be largely attributable to MoS$_2$ formation on the frictioning interface. Under N$_2$ atmosphere, Mo diffused into the metal substrate, easily escaping from MoS$_2$ so the friction reduction effect from MoDTP was not gained. However, when an oxide surface film was preliminary prepared on frictioning surface, this Mo diffusion to metal substrate from MoS$_2$ was effectively inhibited. Then desired lubulication effect of MoDTP was gained even under N$_2$atmosphere. As such, the existence of a surface oxide film on the frictioning surface was concluded to be of essential importance in order to gain a lubrcating effect with MoDTP.

In this study, we aimed to determine the optical properties of the plasma used for the dry cleaning method. The optical properties of the atmospheric pressure plasma device were measured through the degree of ionization of hydrogen or nitrogen gas by ionized atmospheric gas. The degree of ionization of hydrogen or nitrogen is closely associated with surface modification. We observed through our experiments that argon gas, an atmospheric gas, caused an increase in the ionization of nitrogen gas, which has similar ionization energy. This type of increase in nitrogen gas ions is believed to affect surface modification. The results of our study show that the pressure of argon gas and the partial pressure of argon and nitrogen gases lead to different results. This important result shows that argon ions can affect the ionization of nitrogen gas.
An one dimensional atmosphere-canopy-soil interaction model is developed to estimate of the heat budget parameter in the atmospheric boundary layer. The canopy model is composed of the three balance equations of energy, temperature, moisture at ground surface and canopy layer with three independent variables of Tf(foliage temperature), Tg(ground temperature), and qg(ground specific humidity). The model was verilied by comparative study with OSUID(Oregon State University One Dimensional Model) proved in HAPEX-MOBILHY experiment. Also we applied this model in two dimensional land-sea breeze circulation. According to the results of this study, surface characteristics considering canopy acted importantly upon the simulation of meso-scale circulation. The factors which used in the numerical experiment are as follows ; the change for a sort of soil(sand and peat), the change for shielding factor, and the change for a kind of vegetation.
Different crystallographic planes, at a gas-metal interface, have different surface energy. To grow the (100) grains of 6.5wt%Si-Fe alloy preferentially, it was heat-treated in the atmosphere of sulfur by using the surface energy. When the specimen is heat-treated for 1 hour at $1175^{\circ}C$ by using the atmosphere of sulfur produced by heating at $75^{\circ}C$, (100) grains were grown to 3.5mm. Owing to the growth of (100) grains, the coercive force was decreased to 2.1 A/mm, and the magnetic induction at 800(A/mm) was increased to 1.61T.
