  • A visualization study of shock formation of the supersonic jet nozzle using a Shadowgraph Method (SM) was carried out to investigate the effect of the longitudinal variation of coaxial pipe end tip position inside the supersonic nozzle. The experiment was performed for the Mach number range from 1.1 to 1.2 at nozzle exit. The well known shock cell structure was shown with the pipe end located deep inside the nozzle for the studied Mach number. With the pipe end approaches nozzle exit, it was found that the shock cell structure disappeared and turned into complex formation. In order to understand the mechanism of the shock structural change, computational simulation was carried out using the Navier-Stokes solver, FLUENT. Topological sketch was added with an aid of the visualization and the numerical simulation.

  • The effects of projectile impact system on the transient spray characteristic which is supersonic liquid tip velocity were studied by experimentally. Supersonic liquid jets were generated by impact of a high speed projectile driven by a Two-stage light gas gun. A high speed camera and schlieren optical system were used to capture the spray structures of the supersonic liquid jets. In a case of nozzle assembly Type-A, expansion gases accelerate a projectile which has a mass of 6 grams from 250 m/s at the exit of the launch tube. Accelerated projectile collides with the liquid storage part, then supersonic liquid jets are injected with instantaneous spray tip velocity from 617.78 m/s to 982.54 m/s with various nozzle L/d. However, In a case of nozzle assembly Type-B which has a heavier projectile (60 grams) and lower impact velocity (182 m/s), an impact pressure was decreased. Thus the liquid jet injected at 210 m/s of the maximum velocity did not penetrate a shock wave and fast break-up was occurred. Pulsed injection of liquid column generated second shock wave and multiple shock wave.

  • The present study focuses on the characteristics of a supersonic jet flowing from a rectangular nozzle exit on a flat plate. Flow visualization techniques using schlieren and kerosene-lampblack tracing are utilized to investigate shock reflection structures and boundary-layer separations over a flat plate. Wall pressure measurements are also carried out to quantitatively analyze the flow structures. All observations are repeated for multiple jet flow boundary conditions by varying the flap length and nozzle pressure ratio. The experimental results show that the jet flow structures over the flat plate are highly three-dimensional with strong bleeding flows from the plate sides, and that they are sensitive to plate length and nozzle pressure ratio. A multi-component force measurement device is also utilized to observe the characteristics of the jet flow thrust vectoring over the plate. The maximum thrust deflection angle of the jet is about $8^{\circ}$, demonstrating the applicability of thrust vector control via a flat plate installed at the nozzle exit.

  • Viscous solutions of supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate normal to the flow are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. The jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. In the present study, the nozzle contour and the pressure ratio are held fixed, while the jet impinging distance is varied to illuminate the characteristics of the jet plume with the distance. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle at 3D high, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. Here D is the nozzle exit diameter. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the distance increases, but the maximum mean pressure level at the plate is achieved when the distance is about 4D high. The frequency of the wall pressure is estimated at 6.0 kHz, 9.3 kHz, and 10.0 kHz as the impinging distance varies from 3D, 4D, to 6D, respectively.

  • The counter-flow jet from a supersonic/hypersonic vehicle causes a structural change in the shock wave generated around the aircraft, which can lead to reduced drag and heat loads. Since the idea is to mount a counter-flow jet device for drag reduction in the aircraft, it is necessary to understand the effect of such a device on the entire aircraft. In this study, the effect of drag reduction due to counter-flow jet on a conventional rocket configuration was analyzed through CFD analysis. The results showed that the drag reduction effect was the largest in the blunt region and that the counter-flow jet also affected the downstream of the aircraft. The analysis indicated that the drag reduction effect by the counter-flow jet was about 10 to 25 % when targeting the entire rocket-shaped area, while the effect was as high as 50% when targeting only blunt objects.

  • Three kinds of jet flows encountered in the practical airframe design phase are discussed in this paper. Firstly, the side jet effect on the cavity flow over the flat plate was investigated. Secondly, the aerodynamic modeling of side jet influence on body-tail configuration was presented. Computational study of the similarity parameters was done to minimize the wind tunnel test. Lastly, supersonic jet impingement on a flat plate surrounded by solid walls was simulated numerically for both axi-symmetric and three-dimensional calculations with moving body method.

  • An axisymmetric supersonic screeching jet is numerically simulated to examine the length scales of screech frequency as well as screech tone generation mechanism. The axisymmetric Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in conjuction with a modified Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model are employed. It is demonstrated that the axisymmetric jet screech tones can be simulated correctly and the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Instability waves, shock-cell structures and the phenomena of shock motion are investigated in detail to identify the screech tone generation mechanism. Shock spacings and standing wave length are analyzed to determine the dominent length scale crucial to the screech frequency formulation.

  • For the purpose of Thermal Protection Material design problem, a numerical analysis of axisymmetric high temperature supersonic impinging jet flows of exhaust gas from combustor on curved surfaces has been accomplished. A modifed CSCM Upwind Navier-Stokes method which is able to cure the carbuncle Phenomena has been developed to study strong shock wave structure and thermodynamic wall properties such as pressure and heat transfer rate on various curved surfaces. The results show that the maximum heat transfer rate which is the most important parameter affecting thermo-chemical surface ablation on the plate did not occur at the center of jet impingement, but rather on a circle slightly away from the center of impingement and the shear stress distribution alone the wall is similar to the wall heat transfer late distribution.

  • Various experimental data, including mixing areas, cross correlation factors, surface flow patterns on nozzle walls, and far field noise spectra, was used to draw a noise control mechanism in a supersonic jet. In the underexpanded case, mixing of the jet air with ambient air was significantly enhanced as presented before, and mixing noise was also dramatically reduced. Screech tones, in the overexpanded case, were effectively suppressed by trailing edge modifications, although mixing enhancement was not noticeable. From mixing and noise performance of nozzles with modified trailing edges, enhancing mixing through streamwise vortices seems an effective way to reduce mixing noise in the underexpanded flow regime. However, screech tones in the overespanded flow regime is well controlled or suppressed by making shock cells and/or spanwise large scale structures irregular and/or less organized by a proper selection of trailing edges. The noise field in the overexpanded flow regime was greatly affected by the symmetricity of the nozzle exit geometry. In the underexpanded flow regime, the effects of the symmetricity of the nozzle exit on mixing were negligible.

  • Based upon the results of numerical calculation. empirical scaling equations were made for supersonic under-expanded jets in both axisymmetric and two dimensional flows. The objective of the present study is to obtain a straightforward method that can predict the under-expanded supersonic jets issuing from various kinds of nozzles. The present empirical equations were agreed with the calculation results of total variation diminishing difference scheme. The supersonic under-expanded jets operating with a given pressure ratio could be well predicted by the present scaling equations.
