  • Supersonic jets impinging on $60^{\cire}$ wedge were investigated to obtain fundamental design data for jet deflector It was of interest to study flow phenomena such as shock interaction and separation induced by shear layer. Experiments using supersonic cold flow system were conducted for Schlieren flow visualization and measurement of surface pressure. Numerical results were compared with the experimental results. The major parameters are underexpansion ratio, distance from nozzle to apex and design Mach number. Flow conditions were obtained for the wedge shock to attach on or detach from the wedge. The dominant feature of flow-field is shock pattern induced by the Interaction between the wedge shock and the barrel shock.

  • Numerical calculation was applied to supersonic under-expanded jets, and compared with the results of a linear theory and other experiments. TVD difference scheme was employed to solve 2-dimensional and axisymmetric inviscid Euler equation. This paper aims to explore the effects of angle of divergence and design Mach number of nozzle on the structure of under-expanded jets. The angle of divergence was varied from 0 to 20 deg. The results show that the length of the first cell of the under-expanded jets decreases and Mach disk generates at lower nozzle pressure ratio, if the angle of divergence or design Mach number of nozzle increases. The distance from the nozzle exit to Mach disk in 2-dimensional jets becomes much larger than that of axisymmetric jets, and the widths of the jet boundary and the barrel shock wave are also larger than that of axisymmetric jets. Calculation results indicate that the configuration of the under-expanded jets is strongly dependent on the nozzle pressure ratio.

  • For the purpose of a cost effective design of practical subsonic/supersonic ejector systems, an experiment was carried out using a superheated steam as a primary driving flow. The superheated steam jet was produced by several different kinds of subsonic and supersonic nozzles. The secondary flow of atmospheric air inside a plenum chamber was drawn into the primary steam jet. The vacuum performance of the plenum chamber was investigated for a wide range of the ejector operation pressure ratio. The result showed that the static pressure of the mixed flow at the ejector throat is only a function of the ejector operation pressure ratio, regardless of the primary nezzle type employed.

  • An attempt to reduce supersonic Jet noise is carried out by using two steady microjets in a round jet. The jet is issued from a round sonic nozzle with an exit diameter of 10mm. Two micro-nozzles with an inside diameter of 1mm each are installed on the exit plane with an off-axis angle of $45^{\circ}$. Far-field noise was measured at a location 40 diameters off the jet axis. The angles between a microphone and the jet axis are $45^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$. For an injection rate less than $1{\%}$ of the main jet, screech tones were completely suppressed by the microjets. The reduction in the ovelall sound pressure levels were $2.4\;and\;2.7\;dB\;for\;90^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$ directions, respectively. The enhancement of mixing/spreading of the jet by the microjet was negligible. The reduction of noise is probably due to distorted shock cell structures and/or broken large scale vortical structures by the microjets.

  • A supersonic ground test facility to develop Ramjet and SCRamjet(Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) engine should be able to simulate high altitude and high Mach number conditions including air total pressure, oxygen level and specific heat ratio at the combustion chamber entrance. The test facility also should simulate the effect of oblique shock wave caused by the flight vehicle. The test facility developed in this study is supersonic free-jet blow down type, which consists of high pressure air supply source(maximum pressure=32MPa), air heater(vitiation type), supersonic diffuser, ejector, and test chamber(nozzle exit dimension=200mm${\times}$200mm).

  • Supersonic axisymmetric jets issuing from various kinds of nozzles with a throat diameter of a few millimeters were experimentally investigated. The exit Mach number and Reynolds number based on the throat diameter of nozzle were in the range of 1.0 ~ 5.9 and 8.4$\times$ $10^4$ ~ 2.9$\times$$10^6$, respectively. The nozzle pressure ratio was varied from 5 to 85. Present paper aims to offer fundamental information of the supersonic free-jets, with an emphasis to give data with which the shape of the free-jets can be depicted under a specified condition. Experimental data are summarized to enable an estimation of the shape of the supersonic free-jets. The result shows that the shape of free-jets is dependent on only the nozzle pressure ratio.

  • An axisymmetric supersonic jet screech in the Mach number range from 1.07 to 1.2 is numerically simulated. The axisymmetric mode is the dominant screech mode for an axisymmetric jet. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in the conjunction with a modified Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model are employed. A high resolution finite volume essentially non-oscillatory(ENO) schemes are used along with nonreflecting characteristic boundary conditions that are crucial to screech tone computations to accurately capture the sound waves, shock-cell structures and large-scale instability waves.

  • The thrust vector control using a fluidic counterflow concept is achieved by applying a vacuum to a slot adjacent to a primary jet which is shrouded by a suction collar. The vacuum produces a secondary reverse flowing stream near the primary jet. The shear layers between the two counterflowing streams mix and entrain mass from the surrounding fluid. The presence of the collar inhibits mass entrainment and the flow near the collar accelerates causing a drop in pressure on the collar. For the vacuum asymmetrically applied to one side of the nozzle, the jet will vector toward the low-pressure region. The present study is performed to investigate the effectiveness of thrust vector control using the fluidic counterflow concept. A computational work is carried out using the two-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with several kinds of turbulence models. The computational results are compared with the previous experimental ones. It is found that the present fluidic counterflow concept is a viable method to vector the thrust of a propulsion system.

  • Sonic and supersonic jets include many complicated flow physics associated with shock waves, shear layers, vortices as well as strong interactions among them, and have a variety of engineering applications. Much has been learned from the previous researches on the sonic and supersonic jets but quantitative assessment of these jets is still uneasy due to the high velocity of flow, compressibility effects, and sometimes flow unsteadiness. In the present study, the sonic jets issuing from a convergent nozzle were measured by PIV and Schlieren optical techniques. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) with Olive oil particles of $1{\mu}m$ was employed to obtain the velocity field of the jets, and the black-white and color Schlieren images were obtained using Xe ramp. A color filter of Blue-Green-Red has been designed for the color Schlieren and obtained from an Ink jet printer. In experiments, two types of sonic nozzles were used at different operating pressure ratios(NPR). The obtained images clearly showed the major features of the jets such as Mach disk, barrel shock waves, jet boundaries, etc.
