  • Heavy metal(loid) contamination of rice is the main issue in abandoned metal mine area with regard to food safety. A field study was conducted in mine area to see if soil amendments treatment including calcium superphosphate, sulfur, steel slag and S-containing fertilizer could reduce As and/or Cd content in rice grain and increase the growth of rice. The As content in brown rice reduced to 60% compared to the control only in $7.0Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of steel slag treatment. Cd reduction in rice was thought to be not the effect of amendments but the result from the difference in growth and development of rice plant and this could be ascribed to low soil Cd availability to rice plant. Compared with control, increased rice yield of cultivar Hwanggeumnuri was 1.3~2.2 and $1.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in calcium super phosphate and S-containing fertilizer treatment, respectively and the trend was also observed in cultivar Ungwang. However, steel slag treatment reduced the Ungwang yield by $0.4{\sim}0.9Mg\;ha^{-1}$. Future work will be needed to establish the agricultural measure with which secure the safety and yield of rice simultaneously.

  • A field experiment was conducted on a recently reclaimed hillside land to investigate the effectiveness of newly formulated compound fertilizer (10-14-11) containing fused phosphate as phosphorus source. Winter barley was adopted as a crop and commercial compound fertilizer (22-22-11), triple superphosphate, and ordinary fused phosphate were compared with the new compound fertilizer. The result of present study is summarized as follows. 1. When viewed from the plant hight and dry matter yield observed at different growth stages, it was indicated that newly formulated compound fertilizer seemed to be more effective in late stage than early stage. 2. Grain yields were higher in the compound fertilizer plots compared to the triple superphosphate and fused phosphate plots. The yield was specially high in the newly formulated compound fertilizer plot. In this plot, the number of grain per panicle and the rate of maturity were higher than the other plots. 3. The amount of phosphorus uptake by plant in the newly formulated compound fertilizer was lower in early stage and higher in late stage. In this experiment, the magnesium and silica contained in fused phosphate did not influence the growth and yield of barley because the soil was relatively high in these components. 4. Because of the unprecedented severity of winter weather during the experiment, the result obtained in present study may not be generalized until some studies confirm present findings.

  • Incubation and pot studies were conducted with upland soils for a study on determination of the lime requirement based on exchangeable alumium content. The results obtained are as follows; 1. Results of chemical analysis of upland soils show that pH varies from 5.0 to 5.4, and exchangeable Al moves with the range of 1.3-3.0m.e/100gr. Exchangeable Al decreases with years of cultivation. 2. Incubation studies shows that on acid mineral soils almost all exchangeable Al, on average 95% was neutralized with the lime to neutralized 100% exchangeable Al. On volcanic ash soil, however, only 65.5% was neutralized with the lime estimated to neutralize the equivalent of 200% exchangeable Al. The latter has required more lime. 3. The pH of mineral soils is on the average increased from an initial 5.2 to 6.3 when 95% of exchangeable Al is neutralized, whereas that on volcanic ash soil is increased from an initial 5.3 to 5.5 only when lime is applied at rate to neutralize the equivalent of 200% exchangeable Al. 4. A high correlation coefficient (r=0.99) was obtained between exchangeable Al and exchangeable acidity. This indicates that exchangeable acidity is primarly a result of exchangeable Al. 5. In pot experiments with soybean cultivated on one of the hill land soils (Songjoong soil) the application of fused phosphate and triple superphosphate based on a 5% saturation rate ($P_2O_5$ 32.1 kg/10a) showed that the liming factor for calculation of the optimum lime requirements based on exchangeable acidity was 0.594 for fuses phosphate or 1.132 for tripple superphosphate, and optimum pH is approximately 6.0 and optimum neutralization rate of exchangeable Al is 80-90%.

  • This study was initiated to evaluate the Phosphorus(P) leaching potential in the putting green soils and P uptake by the turfgrass in the golf course using the P fertilizers. The turfgrass, Floradwarf bermudagrass(Cynodon dactylon L. PERS,) was planted and grown in the mixture of sand and peat moss in this lysimeter study. Five representative P fertilizers, such as, ammonium polyphosphate (APP), monopotassium phosphate (MKP), MAP(monoammonium phosphate), 0-20-20(liquid), and concentrated superphosphate(CSP, solid) were used in this study. Based on the total P quantity of leachate collected during the whole 12 weeks, MKP and APP are the first group of P fertilizers contributing to the leaching of P, then MAP and 0-20-20 are the second group of P fertilizers causing the P leaching. Finally, CSP is the third group of P fertilizer resulting in the P leaching. However, most of P applied and collected in the lysimeter were leached during the first period of two and four weeks, compared to that of P leached during the second period of six, eight, ten, and twelve weeks. Applications of MAP, APP and CSP, MKP and 0-20-20 in order produced the largest amount of total dry matter. However, APP, MKP and MAP, CSP and 0-20-20 in order showed the largest amount of P uptake. Therefore, based on the data of P leaching, dry matter production, and plant P uptake, it appears that CSP, 0-20-20, and MAP are the environmentally sound fertilizers recommended in the turfgrass putting green soil of golf course.

  • In this study, we sought to identify a soil stabilizer that can be applied to paddy fields vulnerable to arsenic (As) pollution. To this end, we conducted a pot experiment in which we evaluated the effects of different stabilizers on the bioavailability of As in paddy soil. As candidate stabilizers, we assessed calcium superphosphate (CSP), sulfur, and steel slag, which were applied at the rates of 0.7 and 1.4, 0.1 and 0.2, and 7.0 and 14.0 Ma ha-1, respectively. On day 67 after rice transplantation, we detected significantly lower concentrations of As in the solutions of paddy soil treated with 1.4 Ma ha-1 CSP (96.9 ㎍ L-1) and 0.2 Ma ha-1 sulfur (207.2 ㎍ L-1) compared with the As concentrations in control (314.5 ㎍ L-1) and steel slag-treated (268.6-342.4 ㎍ L-1) soil. Compared with the As concentrations in control brown rice (0.16 mg kg-1), concentrations in brown rice were lowest in the pots treated with 1.4 Ma ha-1 CSP (0.09 mg kg-1). Furthermore, in response to CSP treatments, we detected increases in the weight of rice grains (50.0-50.4 g/pot) compared with the control (40.4 g/pot) and other treatments (26.9-48.1 g/pot), which we speculate could be attributed to the reduction in As toxicity to rice owing to a decline in soil solution As contents and the fertilization effect of the CSP treatment. Collectively, our findings indicate a high-level application of CSP (1.4 Ma ha-1) to paddy soil has a comparatively beneficial effect in mitigating the bioavailability of As.

  • To establish the most efficient method of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization in paddy rice a series of internationally coordinated research using $N^{15}\;P^{32}$ isotopes were carried out from the year 1962 through 1967, supervised by the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Atomic Energy in Agriculture under the auspicies of FAO, UN. In Korea College of Agriculture, Seoul National University had been participated in the Coordinated Research Programme from the year 1963 through the last year, arid the results obtained through the six years' researches are summarized as follows: 1. In the application of superphosphate broadcasting or placement at the surface of paddy as basal dressing was most efficient. 2. Split or late application of superphosphate did not affect the grain yield of the rice, but its efficiency in the rice plant uptake was less than in the case of basal dressing of whole amounts. 3. The contents of available soil phoshorus of the experimental sites in Korea were above 60 ppm, and the efficiency of phosphorus utilization of the rice from the fertilizer was approximately 10 per cent. The grain yield response of the rice to phosphorus application in Korea was rather small comparing to those of other countries. 4. The nitrogen uptake of the rice plants from the fertilizer was most efficient when the fertilizer was applied at the time of ear prime growth. However, the most efficient utilization of nitrogen did not necessarily accompany the maximum yield of the rice and basic application of adequate amount of nitrogen was required to secure proper number of panicles. 5. In the application of nitrogenous fertilizer shallow placement at 5 cm depth was most efficient. The effect of split application of nitrogen was not so noticeable. It seemed due to the fact that total application amount of nitrogen, 60 kg N/ha, was smaller than that of usual dosage in Korea. 6. The efficiency of nitrogen utilization of the rice from the fertilizer was about 40 percent in Korea, and the yield reponse of the rice plant to nitrogen application was remarkable comparing to those of other countries, showing the marked differences in the fertilizer efficiency and grain yield according to the application method. 7. The nitrogen uptake of the rice plant was not likely affected by the time and the rate of phosphorus application whereas the efficiency of phosphorus utilization was affected to some degree by the method of nitrogen application.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of exothermic heat and compost generated from decomposition of organic wastes composts were piled up with various sources of raw materials of rice straw, rice husk, human and animal wastes. The duration of generated exothermic heat during compositing process was longer in mixture piles of rice straw/rice husk ratio of 1:1 compared to rice straw alone. Temperature in compost piles added with phosphate as fused superphosphate fertilizer was rapidly increased at the earlier stage of composting and gradually decreased in 30 days compared to the check. pH of compost showed 5.5 at initial piling, however, its peak appeared 8.8 in 10 days with rapidly increasing temperature of compost and maintained around 8.3 after one month. Compost of mixture of rice straw and chicken droppings maintained temperature ranges of 30 to $65^{\circ}C$ for 39 days, compost of rice straw, rice husk and chicken droppings for 69 days, piles of rice straw, rice husk and hog manure for 56 days, mixture of rice straw, rice husk and cow manure for 66 days and compost of rice straw, rice husk and human wastes for 21 days.

  • A field experiment with microplots(D.20cm, L. 85cm) was conducted to obtain quantitative information on the downward movement of nutrients applied to the soils by different amount of irrigation water. The microplots were installed by embedding PVC column(D. 20cm, L. 90cm) filled with sieved soils in the field. Urea, fused and superphosphate, and KCl were broadcasted over the soil in the microplots and surface layer was covered with lime-amended soils. Microplots were removed 1 week after water application and analysed for Cl, $NH_4$ and $NO_3-N$, Bray 1-P and exchangeable cations of Ca, Mg, and K in each segment. Effect of irrigation rate on the movement of these ions were evaluated with the mean downward movement(MDM) determined with nutrient concentration of each segment and the distance to the segment from the site fertilized. For the nutrient studied, MDM was linearly related to the amount of water applied. When one pore volume of water needed for 0.1 bar soil moisture tension was applied, MDM(cm), computed as the piston front of applied water advanced 10cm, was found to be in the order; Cl, 7.52>Inorganic N, 6.03> K, 3.50> Mg, 2.69>Ca, 1.19>P, 0.29. After the downward movement of applied nutrients soil pH seemed to decrease with irrigation in the surface layer(0-15cm) and increase in the subsurface layer. It was also found that ammonium-nitrogen evolved from urea hydrolysis was more effective in raising the subsoil pH rather than the exchangeable Ca and Mg.

  • In order to clarify the effect of various forms or phosphate on the production of paddy in Korea and to find out the superiority of any form, a number of field and pot experiments involving various phosphate fertilizers were carried out in addition to conducting one each of sand culture and soil culture pot experiments in 1963 and 1964. The results of these studies are summarized as follows: 1. In sand culture experiment, the best effect of a phosphate fertilizer was obtained with the mono-calcium phosphate which is soluble in water, followed by citric acid soluble phosphate such as fused phosphate and di-calicum phosphate. However, in the pot culture and field experiments, fused phosphate had shown it's superiority than triple superphosphate which contains water soluble form of phosphate followed by hypo phosphate, roasted phosphate, compound fertilizer, and slag phosphate. The effect of rock phosphate was the least in most cases. 2. The superiority of fused phosphate to triple super phosphate in soil culture was supposed to be: a) The fused phosphate can neutralize the soil acidity. b) The fused phosphate can supply magnesium and magnesium lead to the balanced conditions of exchangeable bases in soils. c) The magnesium in the fused phosphate helps the transportation of phosphate, and regulate the absorption of the element.
