  • This study proposes a new conceptual Hybrid Electric Brake System (HEBS) which overcomes the problems of the conventional hydraulic brake system. The HEBS uses the contactless brake system when vehicle speed is high to obtain superior braking force by eddy current, which is induced in pole area by magnetic flux through a rotating conductive disk. On the contrary, when a vehicle speed is low, contact type brake system such as conventional hydraulic brake system makes higher braking force.   • Neural network control has many innovative potentials for fast, accurate and intelligent adaptive control. In this paper, a learning control architecture for the dynamic control of a robot manipulator is developed using inverse dynamic neurocontroller and linear neurocontroher. The inverse dynamic neurocontrouer consists of a MLP (multi-layer perceptron) and the linear neurocontroller consists of SLPs (single layer perceptron). Compared with the previous type of neurocontroller which is using an inverse dynamic neurocontroller and a fixed PD gain controller, proposed architecture shows the superior performance over the previous type of neurocontroller because linear neurocontroller can adapt its gain according to the applied task. This superior performance is tested and verified through the control of PUMA 560. Without any knowledge on the dynamic model, its parameters of a robot , (The robot is treated as a complete black box), the neurocontroller, through practice, gradually and implicitly learns the robot's dynamic properties which is essential for fast and accurate control.

  • Sometimes, it is more convenient to use paint-type and spray-type EM wave absorbers than bulk-type or sheet-type. Thus, in this paper, we prepared paint-type and spry-type EM wave absorbers. The proportion of ferrites to paints, particle size of magnetic material, and kinds of paint should be considered to prepare a superior paint-type EM wave absorber. There is no big gap between spray-type and paint-type in EM wave absorption of EM wave absorbers prepared with same composition.

Girder Section of Continuous Bridges Spliced by Partial Post-Tensioning (부분 포스트텐션닝 방법에 의해 연속화된 교량의 주형단면)

  • In this paper, a new splicing method was applied to design the girder section of bridges with the span length of 25m, 30m, 35m, 40m and 45m. A U-type precast prestressed section was also determined for each bridge. Additionally, the sectional area, beam depth and Guyon's efficiency factor of the spliced U-type sections in each span were analyzed in comparison with the present I-type PSC bridges. As a result, in spite of an increase of 31%∼50% in the sectional areas compared with the I-type precast girders, the spliced U-type the beam depth of the spliced U-type girder was designed as 2,050 mm compared with the I-type precast girder of 2,600mm in a 40m span bridge. The sectional efficiency factors of the spliced U-type sections were analyzed as 0.76∼0.99. It shows that the spliced U-type sections ar of a superior structural efficiency in contrast to the average sectional efficiency factor of 0.66 value in the I-type girders.

Age-related Outcome of Arthroscopic Repair of Isolated Type II Superior Labral Anterior to Posterior Lesions

  • Background: Repair of superior labral anterior to posterior (SLAP) lesion in patients older than 40 years is controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes of arthroscopic repair of SLAP lesions between younger and older patient groups. Methods: We reviewed 50 patients with isolated type II SLAP lesions who underwent arthroscopic repair. Patients were divided into 2 groups: group 1 included 20 patients aged <40 years, and group 2 included 30 patients aged ${\geq}40years$. Functional outcome at the final follow-up was assessed using a visual analog scale for pain and satisfaction, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons form, Constant score, University of California at Los Angeles score, and periodic change in range of motion (ROM). Anatomical outcome was evaluated using computed tomography (CT) arthrography at least 1 year after surgery. Results: No significant differences in functional scores or postoperative ROM were observed between the 2 groups. In group 2, later recovery of ROM (forward flexion, p=0.025; internal rotation, p=0.034) and lower satisfaction score (p=0.06) were observed for atraumatic patients (n=16) compared to patients with traumatic injury (n=14). Fifteen patients in group 1 (15/17, 88%) and 21 patients in group 2 (21/26, 81%) demonstrated a healed labrum on postoperative CT arthrography, and this difference was not significant. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that arthroscopic repair of type II SLAP lesions can yield good functional and anatomical outcomes regardless of age, if patient selection is adequate. However, the delay in ROM recovery and lower satisfaction, particularly in older patients without traumatic injury, should be considered.

Type A Aortic Dissection with Aortocaval Fistula -Report of 1 case- (대동맥-상대정맥루를 동반한 A형 대동맥 해리증 수술 치험 -1례보고-)

  • Acute or chronic aortic dissection may lead to the rupture, which is the major cause of death. A dissecting aneurysm of ascending aorta(Stanford type A dissection) can rupture into the superior vena cava producing a aortocaval fistula, which is rare, but has been reported mostly in the cases of abdominal aortic aneurysm. We report a case of 67-year-old man with type A chronic dissection and aortocaval fistula, presenting symptoms of superior vena syndrome. The preoperative diagnosis was composed of radiologic examinations, including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging angiography and aortography. The dissecting aneurysm was resected and replaced, and the aortocaval fistula was repaired under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. The details are described here.

Anti-slamming bulbous bow and tunnel stern applications on a novel Deep-V catamaran for improved performance

  • While displacement type Deep-V mono hulls have superior seakeeping behaviour at speed, catamarans typically have modest behaviour in rough seas. It is therefore a logical progression to combine the superior seakeeping performance of a displacement type Deep-V mono-hull with the high-speed benefits of a catamaran to take the advantages of both hull forms. The displacement Deep-V catamaran concept was developed in Newcastle University and Newcastle University's own multi-purpose research vessel, which was launched in 2011, pushed the design envelope still further with the successful adoption of a novel anti-slamming bulbous bow and tunnel stern for improved efficiency. This paper presents the hullform development of this unique vessel to understand the contribution of the novel bow and stern features on the performance of the Deep-V catamaran. The study is also a further validation of the hull resistance by using advanced numerical analysis methods in conjunction with the model test. An assessment of the numerical predictions of the hull resistance is also made against physical model test results and shows a good agreement between them.

Rheological Properties of Various Gelatinized Potato Starch Pastes (품종별 감자 전분 호화액의 리올로지 특성)

  • Potato starches are obtained from Irish Cobbler (the dry type), Shepody and superior (the intermediate type) and Dejima (the moist type). Rheological properties of heat-gelatinized potato starch paste were studied to elucidate difference of various potato starches. Heat-gelatinized 3 to 7% potato starch paste showed pseudo plasticity in yield stress. As starch paste concentration increased, the values of consistency index was increased. Relationship between logarithmic consistency index and concentration of potato starch paste was linear at 5% starch concentration. Concentration dependence of consistency index and yield stress of Shepody was highest. As measuring temperature increased, the value of consistency index was decreased. Irish Cobbler starch paste at $50^{\circ}C$, Shepody, Superior and Dejima starch paste at $60^{\circ}C$ showed linear relationships with different slopes. The activation energies of Shepody starch paste was 3.97㎉l/㏖.
