For the purpose of breeding a high-yield superior variety of Korean raisin tree (Hovenia dulcis var. koreana Nakai), whose value as an edible and medicinal resource is increasing, tree candidates for superior individuals were selected from its 11 habitats in Korea from 1996 to 1998. A clone bank preserve was created in 1998 with 70 clones proliferated by grafting; the fruition traits (e.g., the number of fructified laterals, the average number of bunches per fructified lateral, the average number of bunches per fruiting lateral, the fruitpetiole weight per individual, and the yield per individual) of 47 clones that had bloomed and borne fruit were investigated and analyzed in 2002; five upper-ranking clones whose yield per individual exhibited a 261% improvement against the total average were picked in 2005; and three clones, including 'Poong-Sung 1', that showed a difference in their fruit petiole ripening stage, were finally selected in 2007 as high-yield new cultivars of Korean raisin tree.
This study was conducted to selected Korean black raspberry (Rubus coreanus Miq.) for high productivity. The eight major agronomic traits were investigated from 198 clones of the clone bank established in Korea Forest Research Institute, Suwon, Korea. The selection levels based on number of fruit per fructify lateral (NFFL) over 20, and fruit weight (FW) over 1.3g, and yield of individual per fructify lateral (YIFL) over 25g, were applied on 198 clones, resulted in 17 clones selected. The selected superior trees, 17 clones, appeared regional differences for amount of fruiting among 4 different test sites. When number of fruit per fruit petiole (NRFP), fruit weight (FW), yield of individual (YI) and sugar content were satisfied over 20, 1.4g, 6kg and 9.5 brix, respectively, as a select condition, 5 clones were reselected as the superior trees among 17 clones. for 3 years.

In order to select superior tree from Korea, five major phenolic compounds including (-)-epicatechin(EC), chlorogenic acid (ChA), hyperoside (HP), isoquercitrin (IQ), and procyanidin B2 (PC-$B_2$) in hawthorn fruit were evaluated. We also compared these hawthorn fruits of five clones with Chinese hawthorn cultivars. HPLC with a diode-array detector was used to determine the contents of the individual compounds. Hawthorn fruits of five clones (selected from different area of Korea), and four Chinese hawthorn cultivars grown in the Korea Forest Research Institute (Suwon) were utilized. With their high functional components, Jungsun is the clone including the highest contents of EC (11.26 mg/g) and PC-$B_2$ (24.46 mg/g). The clone of Chuncheon 15 had highest HP (0.53 mg/g) and IQ (0.41 mg/g). From the results, the clone of Jungsun and Chuncheon 15 can be evaluated to be selected breeding material for cultivar development.

The major objectives of fruit breeding lie in improvement of cultivar, easy to be cultivated and of high quality, in order to produce unexpensive, delicious fruit both for fresh fruit market and processing. Recently, fruit breeding in Korea has contributed to breeding of several superior cultivars in major fruit crops, resulting in appreciable improvement in qualities such as skin color, taste and fruit-bearing habit concerned with productivity. In spite of accomplishments mentioned above, the need for both highly disease-resistant cultivars and long-keeping, physiological disorder-resistant cultivars to meet long distance transsportation in the temperate fruit crops of apples, oriental pears, stone fruits such as peaches, and grapes grown in Korea is rapidly pressing more than ever, as cultivars of today susceptible to pests and diseases and vulnerable to physiological disorders are very expensive and time-consuming in post-harvest handling and management. Thus, imporvements made in the above problems through breeding level will lead to the really enhanced productivity in fruit industry. The major impediments of tree size, the long length of juvenile period and the highly heterogeneous genetic composition to the improvement of fruit crops are responsible for the lower amount and rate of improvements of fruit crops as compared to annuals. Considering the expected limitations of the above problems to be solved through conventional breeding methods and strategy, a turning point of breeding a near perfect cultivar would be laid down if innovative breakthroughs in biological technology will be realized in applying some of the techniques of genetic manipulation at the molecular level to the cultivar improvement of fruit crops, such as the selective insertion of DNA carrying genes that govern desirable characteristics. More than anything else, those traits such as fruiting habit deciding productivity, elements of fruit qualities conditioned by monogene, and disease-and pest-resistance of vital importance for successful fruit growing are urgently desired to be improved by advancement of biotechnology for they are more than difficult and need long period to be attained through conventional breeding method.
A metabolomic study was conducted to identify key metabolic components, which are correlated with the growth of 4-year-old Pinus koraiensis seedlings harvested at actively height growing season (May 18th). Among 105 individual metabolites identified by GC/MS analysis, alanine, threonine, oleic acid, and butanoic acids were negatively correlated with both height and weight of 4-year-old seedlings, while malic acid, xylose, glucose, d-turanose and inositol had positive correlation with various growth parameters. During the actively growing season, the concentrations of both amino acids and organic acids in the main stem of Superior seedling group were lower but the photosynthates such as mono-saccharide and sucrose were higher than in other seedling groups such as Intermediate and Inferior. Interestingly, d-turanose, an analogue of sucrose that is not metabolized in higher plants but used as carbon source by many organisms including numerous species of bacteria and fungi, showed the highest correlation (r=0.896, p<0.001) with height of 4-year-old seedlings, indicating that possible interaction with mycorrhizal organisms. Therefore we suggest that several metabolites selected in this study may be used as metabolic markers for complex traits in P. koraiensis.

Selective breeding and hybridization were attempted to improve shiitake(Lentinus edodes) strains for bed-log cultivation, and the results obtained are as follows. 1. Thirty five strains collected in Korea and abroad were cultivated for one generation(five years) and fruit body yields were estimated by the amounts produced from $1m^3$ of oak tree(Quercus mongolica) logs. Thus, three high-temperature type strains including FRI 177 showing productivity of $139kg/m^3log$, two mid-temperature type strains including FRI 188 of $120kg/m^3log$, and seven low-temperature type strains including FRI 187 of $96kg/m^3log$ were selected as superior strains. 2. Twelve hybrid strains confirmed as independent strains through indoor-test with hybrid strains made by Di-mon mating method were cultivated for five years(one generation). Among them, FRI 182 and FRI 184 were turned out to be superior strains. FRI 182 of high-temperature type showed the yield of 108kg per $1m^3logs$ and FRI 184 of low-temperature type produced $103kg/m^3log$. 3. There were no significant differences in productivity among high-, mid- and low-temperature types, but some differences appeared among strain groups. The correlation was not shown in productivities between bed-log and sawdust cultivations.

In order to select superior trees based on fruit characteristics and provide basic informations necessary for their improvement, total 107 individual trees of Sorbus alnifolia (Sieb. et Zucc.) K. Koch were selected from 11 wild populations in South Korea. After collecting normal fruit branch, we investigated morphological characteristics of fruit and then considered its relationship among the 11 populations by multivariate analysis method. Results from principal compound analysis showed that it represented 85.8% accumulated explanation from five principal compounds. According to cluster analysis based on fruit characteristics, the natural S. alnifolia populations were classified into four groups and Mt. Mani population was different from other populations. Selection effect with outstanding candidate trees including superior 5 individual trees (Gwangyo 1, Gwangyo 2, Deogyu 7, Mani 29, Mani 30) was estimated at 122.8%, 115.5% and 182.7% in fruit width, length and yield per fruit bunch, respectively. The object of this results will give us invaluable information about breeding by selection of S. alnifolia in south Korea.
A comparative study was conducted on genetic correlation between 12 open-pollinated families (32-year-old) and their one-year-old seedlings for early selection on the fast-growing trait in Pinus densiflora S. et Z.. Those twelve families were divided into three groups such as superior, intermediate, and inferior, on the base of the growth indexes of 32-year-old P. densiflora. The growth performance of the 32-year-old P. densiflora showed significant correlation with the growth traits of their one-year-old seedlings. Dry weights of the seedlings had significant correlation (P < 0.01) with the growth index of the adult plants and its $R^2$ value was 0.597, suggesting that 59.7% of the families could be selected by using dry weights of one-year-old seedlings. Furthermore, the growth rates of seedling heights for superior, intermediate, and inferior groups were 4.568, 3.773, and 3.535, respectively, resulting that seedlings of the superior group grew approximately 1.3-fold faster than those of the inferior group. Therefore, we concluded that two growth traits of one-year-old seedlings dry weight and growth rate were suppose to the early selection factors for the fast-growing trait for P. densiflora.
