  • Image enhancement has become an important area of study with the recent development of hi-fidelity devices, such as UHD displays. While conventional methods are able to enhance the image contrast and detail, this sometimes results in contrast reversion in boundary region. Therefore, this paper proposes the use of multi-layers and intensity deviation in boundary areas to enhance the perceived image quality. First, the image contrast of individual blocks is enhanced using multi-layers with different sizes. After calculating the block boundaries, weights are then determined based on the intensity deviation and used to enhance the image detail. Experiments with several test images confirm that the proposed algorithm is superior that image contrast and detail to conventional methods.

  • The aim of this work is to study Monte Carlo simulation of ethylene (co)polymerization over Ziegler-Natta catalyst as investigated by Chen et al. The results revealed that the Monte Carlo simulation was similar to sum square error (SSE) model to prediction of stage II and III of polymerization. In the case of activation stage (stage I) both model had slightly deviation from experimental results. The modeling results demonstrated that in homopolymerization, SSE was superior to predict polymerization rate in current stage while for copolymerization, Monte Carlo had preferable prediction. The Monte Carlo simulation approved the SSE results to determine role of each site in total polymerization rate and revealed that homopolymerization rate changed from site to site and order of center was different compared to copolymerization. The polymer yield was reduced by addition of hydrogen amount however there was no specific effect on uptake curve which was predicted by Monte Carlo simulation with good accuracy. In the case of copolymerization it was evolved that monomer chain length and monomer concentration influenced the rate of polymerization as rate of polymerization reduced from 1-hexene to 1-octene and increased when monomer concentration proliferate.

  • In order to select superior tree from Korea, five major phenolic compounds including (-)-epicatechin(EC), chlorogenic acid (ChA), hyperoside (HP), isoquercitrin (IQ), and procyanidin B2 (PC-$B_2$) in hawthorn fruit were evaluated. We also compared these hawthorn fruits of five clones with Chinese hawthorn cultivars. HPLC with a diode-array detector was used to determine the contents of the individual compounds. Hawthorn fruits of five clones (selected from different area of Korea), and four Chinese hawthorn cultivars grown in the Korea Forest Research Institute (Suwon) were utilized. With their high functional components, Jungsun is the clone including the highest contents of EC (11.26 mg/g) and PC-$B_2$ (24.46 mg/g). The clone of Chuncheon 15 had highest HP (0.53 mg/g) and IQ (0.41 mg/g). From the results, the clone of Jungsun and Chuncheon 15 can be evaluated to be selected breeding material for cultivar development.

  • Selection of superior phenotypes of fruit trees and products based on established criteria by local people is a prerequisite for future species domestication and conservation. Thus the study objective was to identify the local people's perceptions and preferences on baobab trees and products. A sample of 142 respondents was randomly selected using structured interviews in Blue Nile and North Kordofan, Sudan in 2013. Descriptive analysis was employed using SPSS and Excel programs. The study results indicated that local people use the morphological characteristics of the tree (leaves, fruits, seeds, kernels and bark) to differentiate individual trees. Based on the perceptions, local people recorded trees with delicious leaves, white pulp color, big fruit size and mature capsule size, and high pulp yield as criteria for differentiating between baobab trees in the study areas. In contrast, the undesirable traits were connected to trees with acidic pulp, slimy pulp, bitter leaves, and low pulp yield. The study concluded that the ethnobotanical knowledge of the baobab tree and its products may play an important role in tree domestication and improvement in Sudan. However, further research on tree genetics is needed to complement the ethnobotanical knowledge for baobab resources domestication and conservation.

  • Microwave assisted extraction(MAE) is known as a more environmental friendly process with economic advantages in terms of less time, less solvent, less energy and less wastes than the current time consuming reflux method. It was applied to develop a rapid extraction method for soluble ginseng components that are major materials used for the processing of ginseng products. In a comparative study between pre established MAE(ethanol 60%, power 80 W, process time 4 min$\times$5) and current extraction method(ethanol 80%, temp. 85oC, time 8 hr$\times$5), MAE was more efficient than the current method to obtain an extract yield(soluble solid), but it was insufficient to extract individual ginsenosides, total phenols, reducing components and acidic polysaccharides. MAE with 80% ethanol by 5 times showed, however, that its extraction efficiency on soluble solid, crude saponin, major ginsenosides, and the other components was equal or superior to that of the current method, indicating that ethanol concentration is one of the critical parameters influencing the MAE process. The quality of ginseng extracts from MAE was assured by evaluating the corresponding standards and by comparing TLC and HPLC patterns with the control.

  • The integration and union of regional digital map and vehicle location data in e-Logistics which means virtual service architecture based on the Internet among the logistics companies is indispensable clause in order to satisfy the visibility characteristics. Most conventional vehicle monitoring and controlling systems were constructed with individual and mutual exclusive architecture so that there are required lots of cost for sharing and integrating the information among them. In this paper, we design and implement an component-based open system which represent moving object location information as well as digital map using the GML(Geography Markup Language - international standard encoding based on XML). We also test proposed system on the delivery vehicle scenario in e-Logistics environment, and validate its superior in terms of extensibility and interoperability.

  • The complications of a tracheotomy are caused by inappropriate surgical techniques, unsuitable cannula selections, and improper wound care. Among these, the solutions to problems of surgical technique and wound care have been reported in many articles. Detailed methods for preventing complications by the cannula are rare. The authors tried to find a way of preventing complications by the cannula Materials and Methods : The authors analized complications in 70 patients who had a temporary tracheotomy and were wearing a cannula. And the complications were compared between 4 commercial cannulas used in our institute. The examination methods used were a simple neck lateral radiogram and flexible endoscopy. Results: The order of most commonly found complications were as followed; at the suprastoma, end of cannula, level of tracheotomy, and infrastoma. Among 4 cannulas, a particular product had so many complications compared to the other 3 cannulas. The most common cause of complications was unsuitable cannula. All complications were cured with no sequelae. Flexible endoscopy is far superior to radiologic exam for detecting tracheal complications. Conclusion: Flexible endoscopy through the tracheostoma is very helpful for detecting complications early and determining if a proper cannula is used, which can prevent further complications such as stenosis or innominate artery rupture. The authors, therfore, recommend using the flexible endoscopy to all patients wearing tracheotomy tubes. Some complications can simply be prevented by replacing the one to another cannula properly fit for the individual patients. Various cannulas should be prepared at the hospital because the tracheal curvature and distance of skin to trachea are individualized.

  • Numerous spatial and transform-domain-based conventional denoising algorithms struggle to keep critical and minute structural features of the image, especially at high noise levels. Although neural network approaches are effective, they are not always reliable since they demand a large quantity of training data, are computationally complicated, and take a long time to construct the model. A new framework of enhanced hybrid filtering is developed for denoising color images tainted by additive white Gaussian Noise with the goal of reducing algorithmic complexity and improving performance. In the first stage of the proposed approach, the noisy image is refined using a high-dimensional non-local means filter based on Principal Component Analysis, followed by the extraction of the method noise. The wavelet transform and SURE Shrink techniques are used to further culture this method noise. The final denoised image is created by combining the results of these two steps. Experiments were carried out on a set of standard color images corrupted by Gaussian noise with multiple standard deviations. Comparative analysis of empirical outcome indicates that the proposed method outperforms leading-edge denoising strategies in terms of consistency and performance while maintaining the visual quality. This algorithm ensures homogeneous noise reduction, which is almost independent of noise variations. The power of both the spatial and transform domains is harnessed in this multi realm consolidation technique. Rather than processing individual colors, it works directly on the multispectral image. Uses minimal resources and produces superior quality output in the optimal execution time.

  • This paper focuses on the numerical simulation of ice abrasion induced by unbreakable ice floe. Under the assumption that unbreakable floes behave as rigid body, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) was applied to simulate the interaction between a fixed structure and ice floes. DEM is a numerical technique which is eligible for computing the motion and effect of a large number of particles. In DEM simulation, individual ice floe was treated as single rigid element which interacts with each other following the given interaction rules. Interactions between the ice floes and structure were defined by soft contact and viscous Coulomb friction laws. To derive the details of the interactions in terms of interaction parameters, the Finite Element Method (FEM) was employed. An abrasion process between a structure and an ice floe was simulated by FEM, and the parameters in DEM such as contact stiffness, contact damping coefficient, etc. were calibrated based on the FEM result. Resultantly, contact length and contact path length, which are the most important factors in ice abrasion prediction, were calculated from both DEM and FEM and compared with each other. The results showed good correspondence between the two results, providing superior numerical efficiency of DEM.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the form and meaning of shaman's costumes worn by each gutgeori in Seoul jaesugut and to derive the characteristics of Shaman's costume at gutgeori. Observational research was conducted for three years by participating in the site of two types of gut, which are divided into local jaesugut for the well-being of the region and individual jaesugut that takes place based on personal request. Seoul jaesugut consists of 12 different gutgeori according to the deity it serves and meaning: Bujeongcheongbae, Gamangcheongbae, Bulsageori, Sangeori, Josanggeori, Sangsangeori, Byulsanggeori, Sinjanggeori, Daegamgeori, Seongjugeori, Changbugeori, and Duitjeon. The shape and colour of the shaman's costume worn in each gutgeori are related to the meaning of the gutgeori. Followings are the characteristics of the shaman's costume from gutgeori. First, shaman's costume adopted traditional costumes that symbolized the characteristics of god represented in each gutgeori. Second, gutgeori consists of multiple gods, and shaman's costumes were adopt to represent the superior god among these gods. Third, sometimes the costumes were adopted according to the characteristic of the god instead of its divinity. Fourth, even if the gods were different, if the roles of the gods were the same, the same form of shaman's costume could be taken. Fifth, the process of gut showed the harmony of yin and yang using the principle of five elements through the colour of shaman's costume.
