  • Emulsions were formed through putting small quantity of nickel electroplating solution into supercritical carbon dioxide, and then electroplating in the $sc-CO_2$ emulsions was conducted. It is an environmental-friendly technology that can solve the treatment of a large quantity of toxic plating wastewater, which is a big problem in the existing wet plating, and also can reduce secondary waste generation fundamentally. Supercritical carbon dioxide emulsions enhanced by ultrasonic horn were formed by non-ionic surfactant and nickel solution. Plating condition within emulsions was set up as 120bar and $55^{\circ}C$ through measurement of electrical conductivity following the pressure change. Experiments were conducted respectively against supercritical carbon dioxide emulsions electroplating and general chemical electroplating, and then their results were compared and analyzed. As the experiment result utilizing emulsions, plating surface was formed very evenly even with a small quantity of electroplating solution, and fine particles were plated compactly without any pinhole or crack due to hydrogenation, which occurs in general electroplating. Used electroplating solution can be reused through recovery process. Therefore, this technology will be able to be applied as new clean technology in electro-plating.

  • In this study, supercritical nano plating was performed to observe its effect on materials. Using supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent, we observed how different pressures and temperatures of the supercritical fluid affected the process and its outcome. The plating current increases as pressure increases from 8 MPa to 16 MPa, but it decreases after that. Similarly, the plating current increases as temperature is increased from $35^{\circ}C$ to $45^{\circ}C$, but the current decreases after that. Also, the thickness of the wet electrolyte plating is about $35\sim50{\mu}m$, while the thickness of the plating done using supercritical fluid is about $20\sim25{\mu}m$. At the results, It to it is considered that supercritical nano plating enable to form more thin and stable plating than wet electroplating methods. Also both of the electroplating methods could be affected plating quality by surface condition, and the supercritical nano plating has been confirmed to product more uniform plating surface than wet electroplating.

  • In this study, the supercritical electroplating was investigated by forming macroemulsion of electroplating solution using surfactant in supercritical $CO_2$. The fluorinated analogous AOT surfactant, sodium salt of bis (2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoro-1-pentanol) sulfosuccinate which has both '$CO_2$ philic' chains and 'hydrophilic' head group was used as a surfactant, and Ni plate and Cu plate were used as the anode and the cathode, respectively. Electroplating was carried out in the conventional method and the supercritical macroemulsion and both results were compared. The supercritical electroplating was carried out in various concentration of surfactant such as 2, 4, 7 wt%, the volume ratio of Ni-plating solution to $CO_2$ was varied in the range of 10-70 vol%, and propane was used as a supercritical fluid instead of $CO_2$. According to the experimental results, the plated surface of Ni on Cu plate performed in supercritical macroemulsion was better than that, in conventional state. In the image of Ni surface plated on Cu plate in supercritical state, there were fewer pin-holes and pits comparing with that in the conventional process. The current and conductivity was increased as the volume ratio of Ni-plating solution to $CO_2$ was increased and the current and the amount of Ni plated on Cu plate were decreased as the concentration of surfactant become higher. In addition, in case of the continuous phase, using $CO_2$ was more effective than using $CO_2$.

  • Supercritical carbon dioxide is often promoted as an environmentally friendly solvent having useful properties for a wide range of technical and chemical processes. But the limited ability of $CO_2$ to dissolve polar or non-volatile compounds represents a major drawback in many processes, because the key components will often fail to form homogeneous solution under practical conditions. The design of $CO_2$ soluble ($CO_2$-philic) surfactant to aid this process is therefore paramount in these areas, which has advanced the "greening" of demanding yet important applications in dyeing, cleaning of fibers and texiles, polymerization and polymer processing, photoresist removal, electroplating, and chemical synthesis.

  • Ethoxylated Nonyl Phenol Series (NP-series), nonionic surfactants, were applied for forming microemulsions in supercritical $CO_2$. Measurement results of the solubility in supercritical $CO_2$ are in the following; NP-series were high soluble in carbon dioxide in spite of the fact that those were not $CO_2$-philic surfactants traditionally well known. Water in $CO_2$ microemulsions were also formed stably. A complexation of hydrophilic lengths for $CO_2$-philic parts of NP-Series surfactants was optimized by NP-4 surfactant(N=4) for forming the microemulsions through the experiments. Formation of microemulsions was confirmed by measuring the UV-Visible spectrum through a spectroscopic method and existence of water in the microemulsions was confirmed as well. In order to apply it for a metal surface treatment or electroplating, an experiment for forming acid(organic, inorganic) solution in $CO_2$ microemulsions was carried out. Ionic surfactant in the reaction to an acid solution became unstable to form microemulsions, however, nonionic surfactant was formed stably in the reaction. Results of the study will be utilized for expanding the application scope of supercritical $CO_2$ which is an environmental-friendly solvent.
