  • In this study, we estimate the transport current loss of Bi-2223/Ag tapes with non-uniform current distribution. The conductor was consisted of three Bi-2223/Ag tapes and the each tapes were attached in parallel. The loss of conductor was investigated both numerical and experimental methods. The numerical code to predict ac loss was developed, and finite element method was introduced. It contained intrinsic properties of superconducting tape, which was obtained from nonlinear current voltage relation with external magnetic field and its orientation. Two results were compared and discussed. They showed good agreements with each other.

  • When REBCO coated conductors (CCs) are applied to superconducting devices such as coils and magnets, they are subjected to deformation in various modes such as compression/tension bending, uniaxial/transverse tension and torsion. Despite outstanding performances by REBCO CC tapes, their electromechanical properties have been evaluated primarily under uniaxial tension, therefore data about the critical current ($I_c$) response in the compressive strain region are lacking. In this study, the characteristic responses of $I_c$ in REBCO CC tapes under bending strains in the range from tensile to compressive were evaluated. The springboard bending beam was used, wherein the CC tape sample was soldered onto the surface of the springboard. A Goldacker-type bending test rig, which lacks a support holding the sample during testing, was used as a comparator. Degradation in $I_c$ behaviors, including strain sensitivity, in differently processed REBCO CC tapes were examined based on the test rig used.

  • The influences of mixed strain mode of bending-tension on the critical current. Ic in externally reinforced Bi-2223 tapes and their interaction were investigated in this study. A test fixture which providing a mixed deformation mode of bending-tension to HTS tapes has been newly devised. When the total strain induced in the tape in the mixed strain mode was expressed by the superposition of the bending and tensile strains the irreversible strain for the critical current degradation of Bi-2223 tapes increased, as compared with the simple bending mode case. The $I_c$ degradation at the region exceeding the irreversible strain showed a medium between the simple bending case and the simple tension case. As the initial bending strain imparted increased , namely as the diameter of mandrel adopted decreased. the apparent irreversible strain in Bi-2223 tapes increased . but the increment became smaller As a result. it can be found that the tension to be applied to bent Bi-2223 tapes during cabling should be smaller. as the mandrel diameter becomes smaller.

  • In practical applications of HTS tapes for electric devices such as coils and power cables, the jointing of HTS tapes is needed. In magnet applications superconducting joints are needed to achieve very low resistance at the joint, but for power device applications, a slightly higher joint resistance may be acceptable. In this study, an economical joint with good mechanical and electrical integrity could be achieved for Bi-2223 tapes which can be applicable to electric power applications. A lap joint method has been used. The joint resistance and strength of the jointed Bi2223 tapes have been evaluated. Electro-mechanical properties of the joint sample under tension have been examined and compared with the case of the single tapes.

  • The influences of mixed mode of bending-tension on the Ic degradation and their interaction on the strain effect were evaluated in this study. A test fixture which applies a mixed deformation mode of bending-tension to HTS tapes has been newly devised. When the strain induced in the tape due to the mixed deformation mode was expressed as a total tensile strain, the irreversible strain to the critical current degradation of Bi-2223 tapes increased when compared with the case of simple bending mode, and the value at both ends were larger than that at the central region of the bend part. The Ic degradation behavior at the region exceeding the irreversible strain showed quiet a rapid drop of the Ic when compared with the simple bending cases. As the applied bending strain increased namely as the diameter of mandrel adopted decreased, the apparent irreversible strain of Bi-2223 tapes increased However, the increment decreased as the mandrel diameter decreased. As a result, it could be found that the tension to be applied to the Bi-2223 tapes during cabling of HTS tapes should be smaller, as the mandrel diameter becomes smaller.

  • YBCO coated conductor is named by second generation superconductor tapes. It is different with first generation superconductor tapes. YBCO coated conductor's specific difference with Bi-2223/Ag tape is more strong mechanical durability. This is important role to apply to superconducting machines. For mechanical transforming of YBCO coated conductors, we are using the well designed former. The merit of transformation is several. First, we vary the superconducting characteristics according to mechanical stress. Second, we reduce the volume of superconductor, so we achieve reducing the volume of superconducting machines. On this study, we experiment the transporting current characteristics of one types YBCO coated conductor. YBCO coated conductor with Ie of 70 A and voltage grade of 0.6 V/cm were connected to spiral former to conduct current application test.

  • In superconducting power devices including power cables in which high temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes are utilized, a reliable electrical insulation should be achieved for its maximum performance. For an efficient design of HTS superconducting devices, a comparative evaluation of the mechanical and thermal propperties for various insulation materials at cryogenic temperatures is required. Especially, in the process of the property evaluation of the sheet-shaped insulation materials, anisotropy according to the machining direction should be considered because the mechanical and thermal properties are significantly influenced by the sample orientation. In this study, the cryogenic thermal and mechanical properties of various insulation material sheets such as PPLP, Cryoflex, Teflon, and Kapton were determined considering sample orientation. All samples tested at cryogenic temperature showed significantly higher tensile strength as compared with that of room temperature. The ultimate tensile strength at both temperature conditions significantly depended upon the sample orientation. The thermal properties of the insulation materials exhibited a slight difference among samples depending on the orientation: for the PPLP and Cryoflex, the CD orientation showed larger thermal contraction up to 77 K as compared to the MD one. MD samples in PPLP and Cryoflex showed a lower CTE and thermal contraction which made it more promising as an insulation material due to its comparable CTE with HTS CC tapes.

  • AC loss is an important issue in the design of high-T$_{c}$ superconducting Power cables. The cables consists of a number of Bi-2223 tapes wound on a former. In such cables tapes have different critical current characteristics intrinsically. And they are electrically connected to each other and current leads by soldering. These make loss measurements considerably complex, especially for short samples of laboratory size. Special cautions are required in the positioning of voltage leads for measuring the true loss voltage. In this work the at losses in a single layer model cable have been experimentally investigated for different contacts and arrangements of voltage leads. The results show that the losses are not dependent on both arrangements and contact positions of the voltage leads. This implies that loss flux is only in a cylindrical conductor section. The measured losses also agree well with those based on a monoblock model and are independent of frequencies. This means that the measured AC loss of the model cable is purely hysteretic in nature.e.

  • We report on the progress that has been made in developing $MgB_2$ superconducting wires and tapes for commercialization and research efforts. A number of techniques have been developed to overcome the obstacle posed by the poor critical current density ($J_c$) of pristine $MgB_2$. Chemical doping has proved to be the effective way to modify and enhance the superconducting properties, such as the $J_c$ and the irreversibility field ($B_{irr}$). More than 100 different types of dopants have been investigated over the past 8 years. Among these, the most effective dopants have been identified to be SiC and malic acid ($C_4H_6O_5$). The best results, viz. a $B_{irr}$ of 22 T and $J_c$ of $30,000\;A{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ at 4.2 K and 10 T, were reported for malic acid doped $MgB_2$ wires, which matched the benchmark performance of commercial low temperature superconductor wires. In this work, we discuss the progress made in $MgB_2$ conductors over the past few years at the University of Wollongong, Hyper Tech Research, Inc., and Ohio State University.
