  • In order to study the thermal-hydraulic behavior of the cable-in-conduit-conductor (CICC), a numerical model has been developed. In the model, the high heat transfer approximation between superconducting strands and supercritical helium is adopted. The strong coupling of heat transfer at the front of normal zone generates a contact discontinuity in temperature and density. In order to obtain the converged numerical solutions, a moving mesh method is used to capture the contact discontinuity in the short front region of the normal zone. The coupled equation is solved using the finite element method with the artificial viscosity term. Details of the numerical implementation are discussed and the validation of the code is performed for comparison of the results with thse of GANDALF and QSAIT.

  • We studied on effective quench protection method to prevent damage from unexpected quench of the inductively coupled superconducting magnet systems for magnetic resonance imaging. And we suggested quench protection circuit that is combined with several protection techniques. This circuit has the capacity to maintain the symmetric nature of the magnetic field and the active shielding effect and to protect shim coils during a quench.

  • The MRI Magnet is a most practical application of NbTi superconductor. In this paper, we present the main research results on superconducting wires for MRI magnet which we have developed. Cu/NbTi superconducting wires were fabricated by repeat of cold working and heat-treating process after that billets were extruded. We investigated the relation of superconductivities of wires and heat treatment condition. The correlation between cross section shape of wires and work inhomogeneity of NbTi rods was investigated by microscopic observation. The more repeatation number of cold working and heat-treating process, the higher critical current is achieved.

  • This paper deals with the combined levitation and guidance EDS(Electrodynamic Suspension) Maglev system. Levitation and guidance forces generated in figured-of-eight coil are examined. End effect of Superconducting magnets is considered in that the air gap flux has been calculated using the finite number of magnets. Induced emfs and currents of ground coils are given as results. Eletromagnetic forces vary according to the built-in position of magnets. Levitation forces of the first magnet pair are the smellest and those of the second one are the largest. This result shows that the end effect of SCMs should be considered in a concentrated magnet system.

  • Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) has attracted a great deal of interest from the viewpoint of energy saving. The magnet of conduction-cooled high temperature superconducting (HTS) SMES is cooled down by a cryocooler. One of the most important problems to be assured the protection of magnet and cryocooler is breakdown at cryogenic temperature. In this study, we investigated insulation materials such as Kapton, Aluminum Nitride(AIN), Alumina($Al_2O_3$), glass fiber reinforced plastics(GFRP) and vacuum in cryogenic temperature. Also, we analyzed statistically the Weibull distribution of breakdown voltage.

  • AC loss is an important factor in the development of superconducting tapes and superconducting power applications. In this paper, magnetization loss in YBCO coated conductor have been measured and compared with Brandt equation. Measurements of magnetization loss were performed under various angles of external magnetic field to consider the anisotropic characteristics of YBCO coated conductors. The results show that measured values of magnetization loss agreed well with the calculated value by using Brandt equation, especially at large degrees of incidence angle. The magnetization losses were strongly influenced by the direction of external magnet field as were expected.

  • This paper presents an analytic method to calculate energy conversion between electromagnetically coupled high-temperature superconducting and copper coils. The energy transfer from one coil to the other is commonly observed during quench of a no-insulation (NI) high temperature superconductor (HTS) magnet. Proper understanding of this phenomenon is particularly important to protect an NI HTS magnet, especially to avoid any potential mechanical damages. In this paper, analytic equations are obtained to estimate the energy transfer between the NI and copper coils. The well-known lumped-parameter circuit model is adopted provided that key parameters of the coils are given.

  • In recent years, the impact of microplastics (MPs) on ecosystems is a serious problem. Since MPs are difficult to recover once they are dispersed into the environment, it is important to remove them at the source. We proposed a magnetic separation of primary MPs (plastics manufactured in minute sizes) sized 10-100 ㎛ that has not been removed in the sewage process, based on the magnetic seeding process. In this study, we used magnetite as a magnetic seeding agent, and conducted magnetic separation experiments in the continuous process using a superconducting solenoidal magnet to investigate the feasibility of practical magnetic separation system of MPs. As a result, 85% separation rate was obtained by continuous separation using high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) with hydrophobically treated magnetite as a magnetic seeding agent.

  • This paper presents experimental and characteristic analysis of hgh-$T_c$ eater-triggered witch using coated conductor (CC) in liquid and gas helium. The high temperature superconducting insert coil which can be installed in a low temperature superconducting (LTS) magnet has been proposed and researched to generate higher magnetic field for MR. Since CC could be an attractive option for HTS insert, it is important to research he characteristics of heater-triggered switch employing CC. We performed the heater test and constructed simulation model using finite element method (FEM.) We performed a protection test and observed normal zone propagation (NZP) signals to evaluate the witch with protection of magnet.

  • The thermal characteristics of the helium circulation by a cryocooler are presented. This study is motivated mainly by our recent development of a closed-loop cooling system for Cyclotron K120 superconducting magnets without any replenishment of the cryogen. A channel is attached on the outer surface of the magnet form and the liquid helium passes through inside of the channel in order to cool the super conducting coils indirectly. A two-stage cryocooler as a heat sink is located at the top to recondense helium coming from the superconducting magnet form. The heat transfer in the natural circulation loop is discussed and the main dimensions of cooling system are determined.
