Intelligent u-Learning and Research Environment for Computational Science on Mobile Device

  • In the $21^{st}$ century, IT reform has led to the development of cyber-infrastructure owing to the outstanding enhancement of computer and network performance. The ripple effect has continued to increase. Accordingly, this study suggests a new computational research environment using mobile devices. In order to simplify the access of supercomputer, Science AppStore, task management and virtualization technologies are developed on mobile devices. User can be able to research by utilizing computational science SW such as compressible flow solver and nano device simulation tool that in installed on supercomputer in mobile environments. Also, this research environment makes it possible to monitor the simulation result and covers 14 university, 33 subjects, and 1,202 individuals.

Vector algorithm for reinforced concrete shell element stiffness matrix

  • A vector algorithm for calculating the stiffness matrices of reinforced concrete shell elements is presented. The algorithm is based on establishing vector lengths equal to the number of elements. The computational efficiency of the proposed algorithm is assessed on a Cray Y-MP supercomputer. It is shown that the vector algorithm achieves scalar-to-vector speedup of 1.7 to 7.6 on three moderate sized inelastic problems.

A Hybrid Cloud Testing System Based on Virtual Machines and Networks

  • Traditional software testing typically uses many physical resources to manually build various test environments, resulting in high resource costs and long test time due to limited resources, especially for small enterprises. Cloud computing can provide sufficient low-cost virtual resources to alleviate these problems through the virtualization of physical resources. However, the provision of various test environments and services for implementing software testing rapidly and conveniently based on cloud computing is challenging. This paper proposes a multilayer cloud testing model based on cloud computing and implements a hybrid cloud testing system based on virtual machines (VMs) and networks. This system realizes the automatic and rapid creation of test environments and the remote use of test tools and test services. We conduct experiments on this system and evaluate its applicability in terms of the VM provision time, VM performance and virtual network performance. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the VMs and virtual networks is satisfactory and that this system can improve the test efficiency and reduce test costs through rapid virtual resource provision and convenient test services.

Modeling and Performance Analysis of MAC Protocol for WBAN with Finite Buffer

  • The IEEE 802.15.6 standard is introduced to satisfy all the requirements for monitoring systems operating in, on, or around the human body. In this paper, analytical models are developed for evaluating the performance of the IEEE 802.15.6 CSMA/CA-based medium access control protocol for wireless body area networks (WBAN) under unsaturation condition. We employ a three-dimensional Markov chain to model the backoff procedure, and an M/G/1/K queuing system to describe the packet queues in the buffer. The throughput and delay performances of WBAN operating in the beacon mode are analyzed in heterogeneous network comprised of different user priorities. Simulation results are included to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed analytical model.

슈퍼컴퓨팅 기반의 대규모 구조해석을 위한 전/후처리 시스템 개발 (Development of Pre- and Post-processing System for Supercomputing-based Large-scale Structural Analysis)

  • The requirements for computational resources to perform the structural analysis are increasing rapidly. The size of the current analysis problems that are required from practical industry is typically large-scale with more than millions degrees of freedom (DOFs). These large-scale analysis problems result in the requirements of high-performance analysis codes as well as hardware systems such as supercomputer systems or cluster systems. In this paper, the pre- and post-processing system for supercomputing based large-scale structural analysis is presented. The proposed system has 3-tier architecture and three main components; geometry viewer, pre-/post-processor and supercomputing manager. To analyze large-scale problems, the ADVENTURE solid solver was adopted as a general-purpose finite element solver and the supercomputer named 'tachyon' was adopted as a parallel computational platform. The problem solving performance and scalability of this structural analysis system is demonstrated by illustrative examples with different sizes of degrees of freedom.

  • A revolution in weather and climate forecasting is in progress. This has been made possible as a result of theoretical advances in our understanding of the predictability of weather and climate, and by the extraordinary developments in supercomputer technology. New problem areas have been discovered and different solutions have been found by the recent high performance computers whose performance has been increased rapidly. Such advances in the computational performance may change the strategy of development of numerical models and prediction methods. This paper discusses a brief history and current status of the supercomputers in institutions for research and forecast of weather/climate. The main purpose of this study is to provide the preliminary information about supercomputers such as architecture of system and processor. Such information would be useful for meteorologists to understand the features and the preference of supercomputers in each institution.

Vector algorithm for layered reinforced concrete shell element stiffness matrix

  • A new vector algorithm is presented for computing the stiffness matrices of layered reinforced concrete shell elements. Each element stiffness matrix is represented in terms of three vector arrays of lengths 78, 96 and 36, respectively. One element stiffness matrix is calculated at a time without interruption in the vector calculations for the uncracked or cracked elements. It is shown that the present algorithm is 1.1 to 7.3 times more efficient then a previous algorithm developed by us on a Cray Y-MP supercomputer.

Study of Dark Matter at e+e- Collider using KISTI-5 Supercomputer

  • Dark matter is barely known because it cannot be explained using the Standard Model. In addition, dark matter has not been detected yet. It is currently being explored through various ways. In this paper, we studied dark matter in an electron-positron collider using MadGraph5. The signal channel is e+e- → 𝜇+𝜇-A' where A' decays to dimuon. We studied the cross-section by increasing the center-of-mass energy. Central processing unit (CPU) time of simulation was compared with that using a local Linux machine and a KISTI-5 supercomputer (Knight Landing and Skylake). Furthermore, one or more cores were used for comparing CPU time among machines. Results of this study will enable the exploration of dark matter in electron-positron experiments. This study also serves as a reference for optimizing high-energy physics simulation toolkits.

  • 하드웨어 기술이 발전하면서 단위 노드당 집적되는 CPU 수와 메모리량이 증가되어 단위 시스템의 성능이 크게 개선되었다. HPC 시스템도 SMP 시스템과 같은 고성능 노드를 사용하는 클러스터 시스템 위주로 발전하게 되었다. 본 연구에서는 IBM Power 595 기반 슈퍼컴퓨터에서 집합 통신이 갖는 특성을 알아 본다.

  • 자동차, 선박, 기계부품 등의 분야에서 고성능 컴퓨터를 활용한 공학 시뮬레이션 기술은 이미 널리 활용되고 있으며, 바이오, 나노뿐 아니라 금융 분야까지 확대되고 있는 추세이다. 공학 시뮬레이션을 수행하기 위해서는 CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics), 기계구조, 병렬수치해석 등에 대한 고급 지식이 요구되는데, 이로 인해 산업체에서의 활용이 활발하지 못한 것이 현실이다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위한 하나의 대안으로 공학 시뮬레이션 프로세스의 자동화 기술이 등장했으며, 열유체, 피로내구, 진동, 충돌 등의 분야에서 특정제품이나 기술에 대한 시스템이 제안되었다. 국내에서는 에어포일(airfoil), 팬(fan), 기어(gear) 등의 제품이나 주조 기술에 대해 공학 시뮬레이션 자동화가 시도되었다. KISTI에서는 축류팬(axial fan) 시뮬레이션 자동화에 대해 프로토타입 시스템을 구축하였으며, 현대차에서는 자동차 부품에 대한 시뮬레이션 자동화 시스템을 구축하여 활용하고 있다. 미국 OSC(Ohio Supercomputer Center)의 경우 용접기술에 대한 시뮬레이션 자동화 시스템을 웹상에 구축하여 서비스를 오픈하였으며, 현재 전 세계 200여 기업이 이용하고 있다. 공학 시뮬레이션 자동화 기술이 보다 발전하기 위해서는 시뮬레이션 결과의 신뢰성, 적용 가능 분야 및 제품의 확대, 데이터보안 등이 확보되어야 한다.
