A Study on the Fundamental Mechanical Properties of Hydrophobic Cementeous Mortar using Silane Admixtures (실란계 혼화제를 활용한 소수성 시멘트 모르타르의 기초물성 연구)

  • In this study, emulsion type hydrophobic admixture was prepared by mixing polyvinyl alcohol surfactant, polymethyl hydro-siloxane and meta kaolin, and the compressive strength and mechanical properties such as permeability and contact angle test of the mortar were evaluated. The developed hydrophobic admixture showed no decrease in strength and the mortar specimen with magnesium oxide developed the early strength. In the case of permeability, total seepage was significantly decreased when the hydrophobic admixture was directly mixed with the mortar, but the effect of meta kaolin contained in hydrophobic admixture was not significant. The surface of specimens coated with hydrophobic admixture shows that the contact angle on the surface was highly increased compared with reference mortar specimen. Further researches to obtain the optimum mix proportion of the PVA fiber, nano-silica and meta kaolin for producing the super-hydrophobic surface are required.

Synthesis of Super Hydrophobic Disazo Red Dyes using Alkylanilines as Diazo Components (알킬아닐린을 디아조성분으로 활용한 디스아조계 초소수성 적색염료의 합성)

  • Novel super hydrophobic disazo red dyes were synthesized to improve light fastness of the primary monoazo red dye of previous study on polyolefin fibers such as polypropylene and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibers. 4-Alkylanilines were diazotized and then coupled to 2,5-dimethylaniline to produce dye intermediates which were then further used to synthesize final disazo red dyes by diazoization and coupling to ${\beta}$-naphthol. Considering both affinity of the dyes toward both polyolefin fibers and color fastnesses, the decyl-substituted dye was determined as the optimum dye. The decyl-substituted disazo red dye exhibited good dyeability on both polyolefin fibes and almost the same color values as the previous primary monoazo red dye. Light fastness on ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibers was improved up to rating 3~4 compared to rating 2~3 of the previous primary monoazo red dye.

Failure Analysis of Commercial Water-Repellent Coatings for High Temperature Plant (플랜트 부품용 상용 발수코팅의 고온 환경 고장 특성 비교 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate failure characteristic and mechanism of four commercial water-repellent coatings for elevated temperature machinery applications. Method: Thermal degradation was performed for up to 64 thermal cycles. 1 cycle consists of 15 minute holding at 523K under 300rpm revolution and 15 minute-natural cooling. Contact angle was measured and microstructure of the coating layer was observed by using a scanning electron microscope. Results: Four kinds of commercial repellent coating showed hydrophobic or super-hydrophobic property implying that all coatings are suitable for room temperature application. Contact angle of three kinds of commercial coatings decreased rapidly after thermal exposure, while only one specimen having hydrophobic surface showed extremely slow degradation. Conclusion: Observed decrease in contact angle of the coatings were attributed to formation of macro-sized pores and disappearance of micro-protrusion during thermal exposure. Optimum water-repellent coating needs to be selected under the consideration of initial contact angle as sell as service temperature.

Analysis of Surface Properties of PVC Thin Film according to Addition of Non-solvent to PVC-THF Solution (PVC-THF 용액에 비용매 첨가에 따른 PVC 박막의 표면 특성 분석)

  • The effect of the addition of a polyvinylchloride (PVC) non-solvent to a PVC-tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution on the surface properties of the PVC thin film was analyzed. The non-solvents used were composed of alcohol-based and non-alcoholic ones. Surface morphologies of PVC thin films according to the addition of the non-solvent were compared. In addition, the hydrophobic properties relying on the surface characteristics were compared. The micro-bubbles generated in the preparation of PVC-THF solution affected the surface morphology of the thin film. In order to implement the normal surface physical properties of the coating thin film at the relatively high concentration of PVC-THF solution, the selection of appropriate drying method was required. When an alcohol-based non-solvent was added, a PVC thin film having a granular porous surface was obtained and exhibited super hydrophobic properties. The volume ratio of the PVC-THF solution to the non-solvent affects the surface shape of the coating thin film. The larger the amount of non-solvent was added, the more advantageous it was to form a super hydrophobic PVC thin film.

Study on the Characteristics of the Absorbency Silicone by Super Absorbent Polymers (고흡수성 수지를 이용한 흡수성 실리콘의 특성 연구)

  • Silicone resin has no water-absorbing function because it is a strong hydrophobic polymer. However, addition of super absorbent polymer gives much better absorbency than that of conventional silicone resin. In this study, we developed novel silicone materials with water-absorbing function by choosing three types of amorphous acrylic super absorbent polymers with different particle sizes, determining the mixing ratio of the three polymers and applying the mixtures into two-component type silicone material for medical purpose. The change in the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear strength, compressive strength and hardness was investigated by varying the particle size and content ratio of the added super absorbent polymers while preparing the silicone resins. The absorbency of the silicone resins was measured over time. Additionally, the particle shape of the super absorbent polymers as well as the distribution within the silicone resin was observed using an optical microscope.
