  • The purpose of this study is to develop a tool for the analysis of the cavitating flow around trans-cavitating marine propellers. In this study, a linearized super-cavitation theory was applied in order to analyze the performance of the 2-dimensional foils. The numerical results correlated very well with experimental data. The trans-cavitating propellers, manufactured and tasted in KRISO, is selected to validate the lifting surface procedure. For a TCP with a Johnson's five term section, the comparison between the numerical prediction and experiments is fairly good and promising. The new lifting surface procedure, developed and validated with 2-D foils and a TCP, is generally considered applicable to the practical design of the trans-cavitating propeller with Johnson's five term section

  • The leading edge of a low-drag super-cavitating foil has been made to be thick enough by using a point drag which is supposed to be a linear model of the Kirchhoff lamina. In the present paper, the relation between the point drag and the Kirchhoff lamina is made clear by analyzing the cavity drag of both models and the leading edge radius of the point drag model and the lamina thickness of Kirchhoff\`s profile K. The matched asymptotic expansion is effectively made use of in designing a practical super-cavitating fool which is not only of low drag but also structurally sound. Also it has a distinct leading edge cavity separation point. The cavity foil shapes of trans-cavitating propeller blade sections designed by present method are shown.

  • The design method for trans-cavitating propellers is considered as the combination of super-and sub-cavitating propellers. Especially the design method of the super-cavitating region of the propeller blade is elaborated. A design example is shown. Encouraging test results obtained in the Korea Research Institute of Ship and Ocean (KRISO) cavitation tunnel of a model designed by the present method are discussed.

  • In this study, a linearized super-cavitation theory was applied in order to analyse the performance of the 2-dimensional foils. For flat plate with non-thickness, the numerical results correlated very well with Nishiyama's theoretical results for closed cavitation model. For plano-convex section, the numerical results correlated very well with Wade's experimental data. The new lifting surface procedure, developed and validated in this study, is generally considered applicable to the performance analyses of the super-cavitating propeller and trans-cavitating propeller.
