The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of either maize or sulla silage supplementation to grazing dairy cows in summer. Forage mixtures used in the four week trial were based on previous experimental results but inclusion of rumen fistulated cows in five treatments enabled rumen sampling and use of in sacco incubations to determine the diet effects on digestion kinetics. Sulla and maize silages were used to supplement pasture and to meet minimum requirements for dietary protein concentration. Five groups of ten cows were grazed on a restricted daily allowance of 18 kg dry matter (DM) pasture/cow to simulate a summer pasture deficit, and four of these five groups received an additional 6 kg DM $cow^{-1}d^{-1}$ of silage (sulla, maize, or sulla and maize silages). A sixth group was given a relatively unrestricted (38 kg DM $cow^{-1}d^{-1}$) pasture allowance. The silage mixtures and pasture were incubated in sacco during the final week of the trial. The pasture was of high nutritive value and not typical of usual summer conditions, which favoured a response to quantity rather than quality of silage supplements. There was no difference in cow performance with the four silage supplements and the low milk solids (MS) production (about 1.0 kg $MS\;d^{-1}$) relative to full pasture (1.3 kg $MS\;d^{-1}$) showed the principal limitation to performance was dry matter intake. Milk composition was not affected by silage type and the low level of pasture substitution (0.29) suggested metabolizable energy (ME) was the principal limitation to performance. Samples of rumen liquor and in sacco data demonstrated significant effects of supplement; DM degradation rates (k) was highest ($0.084h^{-1}$) when cows were fed 6 kg sulla silage whereas diets with a high proportion of maize silage were slowly degraded (p<0.01).
Objectives: A pilot study was undertaken to assess the bioaerosol levels in restaurants and determine the effects of variations in temperature, relative humidity, and air movement on these levels. It focused on the differences between kitchens and dining areas, as well as between summer and winter. Methods: A field survey was performed in six restaurants. An Anderson type air sampler was used for sampling bioaerosols, such as total suspended bacteria (TSB), Gram-negative bacteria (GNB), Gram positive bacteria (GPB), opportunistic bacteria (OP), Staphylococcus spp., and total suspended fungi (TSF). Results: The average levels of TSB were $1{\times}10^2CFU/m^3$ and of TSF they were $1{\times}10^0{\sim}10^1CFU/m^3$. The kitchens had higher bioaerosol levels compared to dining areas, and summer showed much higher levels than winter. The concentration of OP in summer was more than six-fold that of winter. S. aureus was detected both in kitchens and dining areas, even in winter. The main effect of air movement on TSB levels was significant (p<0.05), as was air temperature, relative humidity and air movement on TSF levels (p<0.05). Conclusion: There was a wide variation in bioaerosol levels among different restaurants. The results indicate that cooking foods may be a key factor affecting bioaerosol levels. The effects of air temperature and relative humidity reveal that bioaerosol levels may vary according to the season. The observation of pathogenic bacteria suggests that the hygiene management of establishments should be improved. Future research is needed to characterize the relation between bioaerosol levels and the occupant density of the dining area.

The Gochang-gun Dongho macro-tide pocket-type beach, located on the southwestern coast of Korea, is investigated in terms of the seasonal variations of surface sediment and sedimentary environment. Surface sediments of 45 sites in four seasons (May 2006-February 2007) are sampled across three survey lines (15 sites in each survey line). The surface sediments of the Dongho Beach are mainly composed of fine to coarse sands, and the ratio of fine sand is the largest. The average of grain size is the coarsest in the summer. The spatial distribution of surface sediments shows a coast-parallel band of fine and medium sands during three seasons of spring, fall, and winter, whereas medium sands dominated in the northern part of the study area during the summer. These results suggest that a tide is more effective than a wave in the surface sediments of the Dongho Beach during the summer.
This study assesses the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in reproducing regional climate over CORDEX-East Asia Phase 2 domain with different cumulus parameterization schemes [Kain-Fritch (KF), Betts-Miller-Janjic (BM), and Grell-Devenyi-Ensemble (GD)]. The model is integrated for 27 months from January 1979 to March 1981 and the initial and boundary conditions are derived from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast Interim Reanalysis (ERA-Interim). The WRF model reasonably reproduces the temperature and precipitation characteristics over East Asia, but the regional scale responses are very sensitive to cumulus parameterization schemes. In terms of mean bias, WRF model with BM scheme shows the best performance in terms of summer/winter mean precipitation as well as summer mean temperature throughout the North East Asia. In contrast, the seasonal mean precipitation is generally overestimated (underestimated) by KF (GD) scheme. In addition, the seasonal variation of the temperature and precipitation is well simulated by WRF model, but with an overestimation in summer precipitation derived from KF experiment and with an underestimation in wet season precipitation from BM and GD schemes. Also, the frequency distribution of daily precipitation derived from KF and BM experiments (GD experiment) is well reproduced, except for the overestimation (underestimation) in the intensity range above (less) then $2.5mm\;d^{-1}$. In the case of the amount of daily precipitation, all experiments tend to underestimate (overestimate) the amount of daily precipitation in the low-intensity range < $4mm\;d^{-1}$ (high-intensity range > $12mm\;d^{-1}$). This type of error is largest in the KF experiment.
This study was performed in order to evaluate the risk factors for nosocomial urinary tract infection and the frequencies of organisms isolated, and to provide the epidemiologic and basic data of hospital acquired urinary tract infection in intensive care unit. A prospective analysis was performed with 1,235 urine samples following urinary bladder catheterization in 569 patients, who had no evidence of UTI at the time of catheter insertion, admitted to intensive care unit in Pusan P hospital between June 1997 and May 1998. To identify risk factors for UTI, clinical characteristics of infected patients were analyzed. We analyzed these data by percentage, chi-square and odd ratio. Obtained results were as follows: A total of 569 patients (male 341 and female 228) were an average age of 50.8 years and catheterization of 8.04 days. Incidence of UTI was 16.1% (199/1,235) and The risk factors of UTI were duration of catheterization over 7 days, no use of systemic antibiotics, summer and female, and During the first 7 days these risk factors were no use of systemic antibiotics, summer, place of first catheter insertion (ICU) and type of intensive care unit (NSICU). A total of 220 the isolated strains were Gram negative rod 83 (37.7%), yeast like fungi 74 (33.6%) and Gram positive cocci 63 (28.6%). The common organisms isolated were Enterococcus faecalis 23 (10.5%), Serratia marcescens 19 (8.6%), Pseudomonu spp.17 (7.7%), E. ooh 16 (7.3%), Staphylococcus epidemidis 11 (5.0%) mdklebsiellapneumoniae 8 (3.6%). Therefore, in these results 199 of 569 (35%) patients in ICU with indwelling urinary catheter developed UTI. The risk factors for UTI are prolonged duration of catheterization, no use of systemic antibiotics, summer, and female.

The regional characteristics of summer precipitation in Korea are analyzed with the data observed in 66 stations from 1973 to 1997, using the cluster analysis method. In the phenomena of summer precipitation, the rain-rich regions lie in the south coast region, the northern part of Kyonggi Province, and Yongdong region. The monthly precipitation is mostly influenced by Changma fronts and cyclons in June, Changma fronts in July, typhoons in August, and all of typhoons, Changma, and cyclons in September. The increasing and decreasing trends of the monthly precipitation are equally divided with regard to both regional groups and monthly distribution in the cluster analysis. Especially such trends are considerably clear in the rain-rich regions. The increasing tendency is predominant in the northern part of Kyonggi Province and Yongdong region, while the decreasing trend and the periodicity are noted in the south coast region and Cheju Island. The variation of the monthly precipitation is shown to be great in the rain-rich regions, while it is not much associated with the rain-scare regions. Also, the variation is the greatest in September, while the least variation is shown in July.

In this study, bedclimate was investigated depending on various bedquilts used oin ondol in summer. The environmental room condition was maintained at 26: $1^{\circ}C,\;75{\pm}3\%$ R.H., while the ondol surface was kept at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ without heating. The types of bedquilts were hemp, cotton, quilt made of polyester padding with polyester/cotton cover. Two healthy young women were subjected for seven hours' sleep with two replications for this study. The results are as follows. 1) The range of the temperature under the mattress ($25.2\~32.4^{\circ}C$) was lower than that of the temperature on the mattress ($28.8\~35.5^{\circ}C$), or that of the temperature inside the bedquilts ($30.3\~34.4^{\circ}C$). The humidity inside the bedquilts increased during sleeping, and the range of R.H. was $58\~80\%$. 2) The ranges of bedclimate which subjects feel comfortable were $30.5\~33.8^{\circ}C$ on the mattress, $31.0\~34.9^{\circ}C$, $61\~74\%$ R.H. inside the bedquilts. At this range, the mean skin temper-ature of the subjects was $34.3^{\circ}C\~35.2^{\circ}C$. 3) When there was no heating, the weight of the bedding increased during sleeping, and the weight increase was largest in the case of mattress. 4) There were correlations among the skin temperature of three points of the body (abdomen, thigh, foot) and the temperature and R.H. inside the bedquilt. 5) The effect of the type of bedquilts on the microclimate and physiolosical responses were significant. 6) Generally, when there was no heating, the body heat was transferred to the ondol floor, in summer, heat was transferred mostly through the mattress.
The occurrence of 'algal bloom', caused by the mass proliferation of phytoplankton, causes serious problems in streams and lakes in Korea. Therefore, in this study, the phytoplankton filter-feeding trait of Unio douglasiae, a type of freshwater clam, was used to reduce the algal bloom in outdoor water tanks during the summer. This involved the construction of a U. douglasiae cultivation apparatus, wherein 1,000 clams were divided into 8 rectangular baskets arranged in the shape of an empty square. The control tank was manufactured in exactly the same shape within the water tank, but without the addition of clams. The algal bloom-reducing effect of U. douglasiae was confirmed by the measurement of (and comparing between) the water quality at the center and periphery of the test and control cultivation apparatus. Water quality measurements included the measurement of water temperature, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen (DO) content, and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentrations; the water quality was measured twice a month between June and November 2014.The results of these analyses did not show a significant difference in water quality (temperature, pH, turbidity, DO) between the center and periphery of the test and control tanks. However, the chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentration was observed to be much lower at the center of the test tank compared to that at the center and periphery of the control tank, as well as at the periphery of the test tank. This was believed to be a result of the U. douglasiae surrounding the center of the test tank, which prevented the influx of plankton from the periphery. Accordingly, the results of these analyses suggest the possibility that U. douglasiae cultivation could reduce the proliferation of algal blooms in lakes and streams during the summer. In particular, these results indicate possible improvements in U. douglasiae activity (reduction in algal blooms) by their effective arrangement in the water bodies.

The climatic characteristics of Korea are analyzed with the monthly variability of the temperature observed from 1961 to 1990 in 66 stations. The climate of Korea is composed of spring(April and May), summer(from June to September), autumn(October) and winter(from November to March). In the change of the variability of the temperature, it becomes the highest in winter and does the lowest in summer. In the distribution of the variability of the temperature, it shows the decreasing tendency along the transferring the southern and western coasts from the Yongso region distinctly in midsummer(August) and midwinter (December and January). The climatic regions are divided into two types : the central type and the southern one while the climatic regions of two types are subdivided into four patterns : the western coastal, the inland, the eastern coastal and the southern coastal patterns. In the distributive patterns of the climatic regions, pattern in summer is different from others, while the ones in the other seasons show similarity.
In this paper we present the first results of summer-time F region irregularities during low solar condition observed using the Gadanki MST radar. Echoes were observed on all 20 nights of radar observations and were mostly confined to the post-midnight hours. Echo morphology is very different from the equinoxial post-sunset plume-like features reported earlier from Gadanki. Echo SNRs are lower by 25 dB than their equinoxial post-sunset counterpart, and are quite comparable to the equinoxial irregularities in the post-midnight hours, which are essentially the decaying post-sunset irregularities. The Doppler velocities, which lie in the range of $\pm$ 100 m s-1, show upward/northward motion of the irregularities during the initial phase in contrast to the observed predominant downward/southward velocities associated with the decaying equinoxial post-midnight F region irregularities. Spectral widths of the summer echoes, which are well below 50 m s-1 and are very similar to those of the decaying equinoxial irregularities, represent the presence of weak plasma turbulence. Simultaneous observations made using a collocated ionosonde show no ionogram trace during 2200-0530 LT except for a few occasions. Weak frequency type spread F observed during midnight hours occurred without prior occurrence of range spread F. Concurrent ionosonde observations made from magnetic equatorial location Trivandrum also show very similar result and thus no height rise of the F layer during the midnight hours could be monitored. The preliminary analysis suggests that the post-midnight irregularities reported here are mostly freshly generated ones. The observations are discussed in the light of other observational results reported earlier and the current under standing on the post-midnight occurrence F region irregularities in summer.
