  • Brain potential is described by using Euler Lagrange equation derived from Lagrangian based on SMNI(Statistical Mechanics of Neocortical Interaction). It is assumed that excitatory neuron firing is amplitude-modulated dominantly by the sum of two modes of frequency ${\omega}and 2 {\omega}$ . Time series of this neuron firing is numerically calculated. $I_{L}$related to low frequency distribution of power spectrum, $I_{H}$high frequency, and S(standard deviation) are introduced for the effective extraction of the dynamic property in this simulated brain potential. $I_{L}$,$I_{H}$, and S are obtained from EEG of 4 persons in rest state and are compared with thoretical results. It is of importance in various fields related to human well-being such as comfort-pursued industrial design, psychology, medicine to characterize human emotional states by EEG analysis. The pleasant and unpleasant sensation among various emotional states would be demonstrated to be determined in terms of ${\epsilon}$ and ${\gamma}$ parameters estimated by the simulated $I_{L}$-$I_{H}$-S relations.

  • Linear and nonlinear motion responses of a Tension Leg Platform(TLP) was investigated by model tests. The model tests were carried out at KRISO's Ocean Engineering Basin which has a deep pit of which diameter and depth are 5 meters and 12.5 meters, respectively. Optical sensors were used for measuring drift motions, and a set of accelerometers were employed for analyzing wave frequency motions. ISSC TLP was chosen as the model for the present study. Scale ratio was 1/65 and elastic modelling of tether system were conducted. Very good agreement was obtained between experimental results and theoretical calculations not only in linear motion responses but tension responses, nonlinear wave drift force and double frequency excitations.

  • An approach to 3D visualization of multiple sound sources has been developed with the application of a moving array technique. Frequency-domain beamforming algorithm is used to generate a beam power map and the sound source is modeled as a point source. When a conventional delay and sum beamformer is used, it is considered that 2D distribution of sensors leads to have deficiency in spatial resolution along a measurement distance. The goal of moving an array in this study is to form 3D array aperture surrounding multiple sound sources so that the improved spatial resolution in a virtual space can be expected. Numerical simulation was made to examine source localization capabilities of various shapes of array. The 3D beam power maps of hemispherical and spherical distribution are found to have very sharp resolution. For experiments, two sound sources were placed in the middle of defined virtual space and arc-shaped line array was rotated around the sources. It is observed that spherical array show the most accurate determination of multiple sources' positions.

  • The governing differential equations for free vibration of multi-step orthotropic shear plates with variably distributed mass, stiffness and viscous damping are established. It is shown that a shear plate can be divided into two independent shear bars to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the plate. The jk-th natural frequency of a shear plate is equal to the square root of the square sum of the j-th natural frequency of a shear bar and the k-th natural frequency of another shear bar. The jk-th mode shape of the shear plate is the product of the j-th mode shape of a shear bar and the k-th mode shape of another shear bar. The general solutions of the governing equations of the orthotropic shear plates with various boundary conditions are derived by selecting suitable expressions, such as power functions and exponential functions, for the distributions of stiffness and mass along the height of the plates. A numerical example demonstrates that the present methods are easy to implement and efficient. It is also shown through the numerical example that the selected expressions are suitable for describing the distributions of stiffness and mass of typical multi-storey buildings.

  • The contribution of the non-$180^{\circ}C$ domains to the electric-field-induced strains (EFI-strains) of PZT ceramics was evaluated by an XRD method and by an interferometric method. The XRD intensity ratio of 200 and 002 diffraction peaks of tetragonal PZT was measured under strong electric fields. The amount of the $90^{\circ}$ domain reorientation was evaluated and the strain due to the domain reorientation was calculated. It was confirmed that the EFI-strain of PZT ceramics was equal to the sum of the strain calculated from the d$_33$ constant determined by the resonance-antiresonance method and the strain due to the $90^{\circ}$ domain reorientation. The amount of the $90^{\circ}$domain reorientation has a linear relation with the c/a ratio in the "soft" PZT ceramics. A Mech-Zehnder interferometer was constructed to measure the EFI-strains vs. electric-field curves of PZT ceramics as a function of frequency. The EFI-strain vs. electric-field curve showed a hysteresis due to the effect of the non-$180^{\circ}$ domain reorientation when the applied voltage was high and its frequency was low. The apparent piezoelectric constant increased from the d$_33$ value determined by the resonance-antiresonance method with decreasing frequency. This deviation was attributed to the non-$180^{\circ}$ domain contribution.tribution.

  • Widespread infectious diseases are a concern for workers working in confined spaces. However, there is no risk assessment index for the risk of infectious disease in the workplace. Therefore, we propose a simple but effective index model to assess the risk of infectious diseases in the workplace. The proposed model identifies the risk of each workplace through an evaluation sheet comprising the frequency and intensity of the infectious disease. The intensity of an infectious disease is generally governed by the density of workers, whereas frequency is the sum of physical-e nvironmental and human management factors. By multiplying intensity and frequency, the risk of the workplace is derived. Through the proposed model, we evaluate the risks of workers at 15 different work sites. The proposed model clearly reveals what should be improved to keep workers safe from infectious diseases and will be helpful in assessing the risk of contagious disease at the work place.

  • Two experiments were conducted to examine the role of Kulja and morpheme in processing two-syllable Sino-Korean words. In Experiment 1, the effects of morphemic frequency were not significant at the initial and final positions of a word while Kulja frequency and Kulja-morpheme correspondence at both positions in a word had a significant impact on the processing of nonwords. Lexical decision times were longer for nonwords with high frequency Kulja and for nonwords with ambiguous Kulja-morpheme correspondence whose Kulja can go with many different morphemes. In Experiment 2 Kulja-morpheme correspondence was examined for words as well as nonwords. Lexical decisions were slower for stimuli with ambiguous Kulja-morpheme correspondence. The effect was more stable for nonwords, which replicated the result of Experiment 1. In sum, the results of this study suggest that words with ambiguous Kulja-morpheme correspondence activate many different morphemes and competition among these morphemic candidates slows down the lexical selection process. Kulja frequency, Kulja neighborhood, morphemic frequency, morphological neighborhood, and Kulja-morpheme correspondence in Korean word recognition were also discussed.

  • For OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) systems, 2-D MMSE (2-Dimensional Minimum Mean Square Error) channel estimation provides optimal performance in frequency/time selective fading channel environment. However, the 2-D MMSE channel estimation has high computational complexity due to the large matrix size, because the 2-D MMSE channel estimation considers time as well as frequency axis for channel estimation. To reduce the computational complexity, we propose a modified 2-D MMSE channel estimator which is based on 1-D MMSE channel estimation with weighted sum. Furthermore, we consider RMS delay spread and Doppler frequency estimation for 2-D MMSE channel estimation. We show that the proposed method can significantly reduce computational complexity as well as that it can perform close to 2-D MMSE channel estimation.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of the road alignment, correlations among evaluation factors of the alingment, and the relationships between the evaluation factors and terrain factors for the forest road of five National Forest Offices. The results were as follows : 1. The elongation coefficients(${\eta}$) of forest road in Kangnung and Wonju National Forest Office were ranged 0.3~0.5, and those of Andong, Namwon, and Kongju National Forest Offices were ranged 0.2~0.3 in straight line of 100m, 200m, and 300m. 2. Three different types of plane alignment were identified for Kangnung and Wonju National Forest Offices, Namwon and Kongju National Forest Offices, Andong National Forest Office. However, longitudinal alignment for five National Forest Offices tended to be similar conditions. 3. Low correlation coefficients were calculated in the relation between elongation coefficients(${\eta}$) and evaluation factors of plane alignment(curve length ratio(%), sum of inverse number of each curve radius(m/km), and sum of each intersection angle($^{\circ}/km$)) for three straight lines. On the contrary, high correlation coefficients were obtained among the relations of curve length ratio(%), sum of inverse number of each curve radius(m/km), and sum of each intersection angle($^{\circ}/km$). 4. Slope(%) were closely correlated with plane alignment, and so were the relationships between frequency of valleys and streams(No./km) and elongation coefficients(${\eta}$) of forest road.
