2-Hydroxymethyl-2,5-dihydrothiophene 1,1-dioxide (1) was prepared from thiophene-2-carboxylic acid by consecutive reactions involving the Birch reduction, esterification, reduction with lithium aluminum hydride, and oxidation with Oxone$^{\circledR}$. The esterification of alcohol 1 with various unsaturated carboxylic acids provided the precursors 8 for the intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction. The cheletropic expulsion of sulfur dioxide from the esters 8 followed by intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction furnished bicyclic ${\gamma}$-and ${\delta}$-lactones.
The study was performed to investigate the effects of gaseous emission of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on the growth of rice plant under stressed field conditions. This study is specifically dealt with multiple effects of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on various plant growth indicators such as leaf damage, weight of grain, panicles per hill, spikelets per panicle and percent fertility. It appears that there is a good correlation between ambient concentrations of sulfur oxides and sulfur contents found in leaves with an average correlation coefficient of 0.868 within a 1% significance level. A better multiple correlation was found between percent leaf damage and sulfur and fluorine contents found in leaf with a significance of 1% level. The correlation coefficient ranges from 0.807 to 0.978 with an average being 0.922. An evaluation of data observed has demonstrated that both panicles per hill and percent fertility are significantly affected by air pollutants. As expected, hydrogen fluorides have more effects than sulfur oxides. It is, however, interesting to note that spikelets per panicle has slightly been affected while no indication of effects on l000-grain weight has been observed. This may lead to a conclusion that a reduction in yield of rice under polluted field conditions may have more been caused by the diminution panicles per hill and percent fertility rather than by the diminution of spikelets per panicle and grain weight.

This experimental study aims to investigate the use of a wet electrostatic precipitator as a post-treatment device to satisfy the strict emission regulations for sulfur oxides and particulate matter (PM). The inlet/outlet of a wet electrostatic precipitator was installed in a funnel using a marine four-stroke diesel engine (STX-MAN B&W) consuming marine heavy fuel oil (HFO) with a sulfur content of about 2.1%. Measurements were then obtained at the outlet of the wet electrostatic precipitator; an optical measuring instrument (OPA-102), and the weight concentration measurement method (Method 5 Isokinetic Train) were used for the PM measurements and the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR; DX-4000) approach was used for the sulfur oxide measurements. The experimenst were conducted by varying the engine load from 50%, to 75% and 100%; it was noted that the PM reduction efficiency was a high at about 94 to 98% under all load conditions. Additionally, during the process of lowering the exhaust gas temperature in the quenching zone of the wet electrostatic precipitator, the sulfur dioxide (SO2) values reduced because of the cleaning water, and the reduction rate was confirmed to be 55% to 81% depending on the engine load.

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is the major sulfur gas released from the ocean. The atmospheric DMS released from the ocean is oxidized mainly by hydroxyl (OH) radical during the day and nitrate (NO$_3$) radical at night to form sulfur dioxide (SO$_2$) as well as other stable products. The oxidation mechanism of DMS via OH has been known to proceed by two channels; abstraction and addition channels. The major intermediate product of the addition channel has been known to be dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) based on laboratory chamber studies and field experiments. However, a branching ratio for DMSO formation is still uncertain. The reaction of DMSO with OH ultimately produces SO$_2$and dimethylsulfone. The major product of the abstraction channel has known to be SO$_2$from laboratory chamber studies. But overall conversion efficiency for DMS to SO$_2$from DMS oxidation is still inconsistent in the literature. Based on laboratory and field studies, the conversion efficiency from the abstraction channel is likely to be greater than 0.5, while that from the addition channel is likely to be greater than 0.6. Overall conversion efficiency from DMS to SO$_2$might be greater than 0.5 based on the above two values in the remote marine boundary layer (MBL). This high efficiency in the remote MBL is supported by strong coupling between DMS and SO$_2$measurements with high temporal resolution.

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) performance degrades seriously when sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are contaminated in the fuel gas at anode and air source at cathode, respectively. This paper reveals the effect of the combined sulfur impurity poisoning on both PEMFC cathode and anode parts through measuring electrical performance on single FC operated under 1 ppm to 10 ppm impurity gases. The severity of $SO_2$ and $H_2S$ poisoning depended on concentrations of impurity gases under optimum operating conditions($65^{\circ}C$ of cell temperature and 100 % relative humidity). Sulfur adsorption occured on the surface of Pt catalyst layer on MEA. In addition, MEA poisoning by impurity gases were cumulative. After four consecutive poisonings with 1, 3, 5 to 10 ppm, the fuel cell performance of PEMFC was decrease upto 0.54 V(76 %) from 0.71 V.

We try to distribute air pollution sources at target area. The complex method is used to distribute air pollution sources. Most of people, However, want to simple indicator as standard for express air pollution source. In many area, air pollution is caused by different types of sources. The general type is point source, such as tall stack of power plants and oil refineries stacks. A second type is areal source, such as local industry and transportation. In this aspect, the ratio of sulfur dioxide to nitrogen oxides (RSN =SO$_2$/NOx)is an indicator of air pollution source. the role of this ratio is to show the characteristics at target area of the relationship the point and the areal source. The purpose of this study is to estimate of emission factors of the air pollutants for the melting furnaces for the iron and steel industry. The result of this study is able to obtaine the emission factor of particulate matters (PM), sulfur dioxide. nitrogen oxides for melting furnace. The emission factors of each pollutants were as follows : - the emission factor varied between 6.13E-03~6.12E-01 kg/ton for PM -1.59E-01~2.45E+00kg/ton for $SO_2$ - 6.82E-02~6.88E-01 kg/ton for NOx, respectively. Analysis of the differences in the emission factors of ours and U.S. EPA's yielded the following results for the Wilcoxon method : p>0.05. The statistical analysis showed no differences in the our emission factors and U.S. EPA's

Mild steel and zinc specimens were tested in five atmospheric testing sites of Vietnam in order to collect the corrosion databank as well as to study the corrosion mechanism in tropical conditions, in period of 1997-2000. The results obtained showed that the corrosion rate of steel is in the range of $10-50\;{\mu}m/year$ and of zinc is of $1-5\;{\mu}m/year$. They are interpretable in the comparison with the data obtained in different countries in the South East Asian as well as previous reports of Vietnamese nation project In atmospheric corrosion. The main factors affecting the corrosion in Vietnam tropical conditions are TOW (time of wetness) and salinity. The relationship between sulfur dioxide and corrosion of metals, particularly, zinc was not found clearly. An explanation was suggested about the complex effect of different pieces present in tropical atmosphere and about the alternative of the dominant factors such as humidity, salinity or temperature.
[ $SO_2$ ]and NO gases that come from the flue gases of most of all industrial combustion processes are harmful to everything include person and industrial facilities. For the simplification of the environmental clean-up processes, we studied the decomposition process by microwave. The microwave can destroy molecules into elementary atoms and offers energy to the atoms to react with carbons. Since the microwave is not absorbed into quartz tube and metallic chamber, the air pollution gases can be removed with much lower energy than in the case of conventional methods. We studied the decomposition of $SO_2$ and NO gases on the carbon beds by microwave. In the microwave field, the gases can be decomposed to form other compounds, such as elementary sulfur, nitrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. It was found that CO gas is formed at higher temperature than is $CO_2$ gas, so it needs to control the bed temperature depend on products that we want to get.
