In oil-contaminated environments, anaerobic biodegradation of toluene depended on the concentration and distribution of terminal electron acceptor as well as the physicochemical properties such as DO concentration, redox potential and pH. This study showed the anaerobic biodegradation of toluene in two different soils by using nitrate reduction, ferric iron reduction, sulfate reduction and methanogensis. Toluene degradation rates in the soil samples taken from rice filed and tidal mud flat by nitrate reduction were higher than those by other processes. Tho soil samples from the two fields were enriched for 130 days by providing toluene as a sole carbon source and nitrate or sulfate as a terminal electron acceptor. The toluene degradation rates in the enriched denitrifying consortia obtained from the rice field and tidal mud flat soil were 310.7 and 200.6 $\mu$mol$ L^{-1}$ / $d^{-1}$, respectively. The toluene (legradation rates in the enriched sulfate-reducing consortia from the fields ranged fi-om 149.1 to 86.1$\mu$mol $L^{-1}$ / $d^{-1}$ .
To find out the oxidation process of potential acid sulfate soil(PASS) along with time. the PASS were treated with lime and ammonia water to adjust soil pH in laboratory column condition. pH range of PASS showed 6.5 to 7.5. however, complete oxidized PASS by $H_2O_2$ showed 2.1 to 2.5. After pilling the PASS under the natural condition. oxidation occured slowly from surface of the pilled soil. The oxidation of PASS proceeded slowly when the soil was in submerged condition. but quickly in dried condition. The content of sulfide-sulfur in PASS sharply decreased after exposing to the air and the decreasing rate was greater in dried than in submerged condition. The content of sulfate-sulfur continuously decreased in submerged condition. but increased in dried condition. Contents of $Fe^{+{+}}$ and $Al^{+{+}}$ in PASS were generally increased with time and the increasing rate was greater in submerged than in dried condition. Liming to PASS was slowly acting to pH change and ammonia water caused fast pH change within a short period of time. The contents of sulfate-sulfur and exchangeable aluminum in drainage water decreased with time and the contents of sulfide-sulfur and ferrous iron were increased.
Acid mine drainage (AMD) resulting from pyrite oxidation in mining areas, subsequently leads to soil acidification accompanied by lowering pH and high concentration of metals and metalloids in its surrounding environment. Regarding to this, the microbial amelioration has been considered as a promising option for a more cost-effective and eco-friendlier countermeasure, compared to the use of alkaline chemicals. This study was aimed to evaluate influencing factors in microbially-mediated amelioration of acidic soil spiked by simulated AMD. For this, microcosm experiments were conducted by acid-neutralizing bacterial consortium (dominated by Klebsiella sp. and Raoultella sp.) under the various conditions of AMD spikes (0-2,500 mg SO42-/L), together with acidic mine soil (0-100 g) or sphagnum peat (0-5 g) in the 200 mL of nutrient medium. The employed bacterial consortium, capable of resisting to high level of sulfate concentration (up to 1,500 mg SO42-/L) in low pH, generated the ammonium while concomitantly reduced the sulfate, subsequently contributing to the effective soil stabilization with an evolution of soil pH up to neutral. Furthermore, it demonstrates that suitable condition has to be tuned for successful microbial metabolism to facilitate with neutralization during practical application.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the changes on nutrient uptake and yields of onion when it was applied with urea and ammonium sulfate as nitrogen fertilizer types; potassium chloride and potasssium sulfate as potassium fertilizer types and lime requirement and phosphorus absorption coefficient controlled 5% as soil improvement index. The variety of onion used was CheonJuHwang and the soil used was Yonggye series in the Jeonnam Muan area. The amounts of N, P and K uptake were higher in the mixed application plot of ammonium sulfate and potassium sulfate than in the plot of urea or potassium chloride. The sulfate content of soil was higher in the period of plant growth than in the harvest stage. The sulfate content of plant was highest in the harvest stage and this content was higher in the stem and in the leaf than in the bulb. The sugar content of onion was 7.43~8.23 Brix content was higher in the large bulb than in the small bulb. The weight of dry matter and the rate of good quality were high in the mixed application plot of ammonium sulfate and potassium sulfate, so the yield of onion was increased 2~6% compared with control.

This study investigated the effect of sulfate source on removal efficiency in electrokinetic bioremediation which needs sulfate to degrade contaminants by an applied microorganism. The representative contaminant and the applied microorganism were phenanthrene and Sphingomonas sp. 3Y, respectively. When magnesium sulfate was used, the magnesium ion combined with hydroxyl ion electrically-generated at cathode to cause the decrease of electrolyte pH, and then the microbial activity was inhibited by that. When ammonium sulfate and disodium sulfate were used to solve the pH control problem, the pH values of electrolyte and soil solution were maintained neutrally, and also the high microbial activity was observed. With the former sulfate source, however, ammonium retarded the phenanthrene degradation, and so the removal efficiency decreased to 12.0% rather than 21.8% with magnesium sulfate. On the other hand, the latter improved the removal efficiency to 27.2%. This difference of removal efficiency would be outstanding for an elongated treatment period.
A Potential acid sulfate soil derived from continental Holocene deposits on the fan-base was found and it was characterized with improvement practices. Artesian wells were scattered in the area, and the imperfectly drained soils were featured by having fine loamy with 7~30% of gravels. The potential acid sulfate soil layers were typified by having darkness in color with around 3.3~3.8% of O.M. and 0.34~0.41% of total sulfur. Soil pH ranged from 3.4 to 3.8 but it was decreased to 1.9~2.5 after oxidation with $H_2O_2$. Ground water sprang out from an artesian well contained a high amount of minerals such as Na, Ca, Mg, K, etc. and about 80ppm of sulfate which seemed to be responsible for pyrite formation. The soil was classified to member of "Fine loamy, mixed, acid, mesic, sulfic Haplaquepts" in taxonomically, and "weak potential acid sulfate soils" in interpretatively. The installation of tile drains with adding fine earth and liming were effective. However, the pH goes down to 4.8 again after 3 years of improvement practices.

Acid sulfate soil and potential acid sulfate soil material are worldwide in distribution and are problematic in agriculture and environment due to their present and potential acidity developed by the oxidation of sulfides. Most of them are sedimentary origin and a few cases are reported as volcanic or metamorphic origin. We report a potential acid sulfate soil material originated from volcanic activity during Mesozoic. A profile of Bongsan series-weathered nonpyritic andesite-hydrothermally altered pyrite rich andesite was studied with field examination, chemistry, and mineralogy. Once, the pyrite rich andesite was exposed to atmosphere by excavation and leveling works for a residential area and the lay out site had subsequent acidification problem of soil and surface water. The parent material and soil profile of Bongsan series had no signs of presence of pyrite and acid sulfate weathering such as yellow mottles. However, the hydrothermally altered andesite substrata contained significant amount of pyrite showing characteristics of hydrothermal origin such as cubic and pyritohedron morphology and occurrence along cracks.
Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of pH, gibbsite, and organic matter on sulfate adsorption by soils. Samples of five soil series (Songjeong, Gopyung, Yeasan, Gyorae, and Namwon), different in physical and chemical properties, were used in this study. The results obtained from sulfate adsorption experiment with sulfate solutions of the concentrations ranging from 50 to 400 ppm were as follows: 1. The adsorption phenomena for five soils were well described by the Freundlich adsorption isotherm over a given range of sulfate concentration. 2. The amounts of sulfate adsorbed and K value of Freundlich adsorption isotherm increased as the initial pH of the suspension decreased. 3. Although the changes in pH of the suspension on the adsorption equilibrium were hardly observed in the soil treated with gibbsite, the sulfate adsorption rates were increased with amount of gibbsite treated. 4. The effects of pH of the suspension on the adsorption rates in the soils treated with gibbsite were remarkable at the level of 0.1% but were little at the level of 1.5%. 5. The adsorption rates of soils, treated with organic matter and incubated for three weeks, were in the order: starch > straw > compost. At the relatively high levels (5 and 10%) of treatments, compost treatment resulted in the sulfate desorption phenomena.

This study was conducted to select proper soil amendments in order to reduce the occurrence of potato scab and maintaining soil health by applications of dolomitic lime, sulfur, potassium sulfate, shell meal fertilizer, silicate fertilizer, lime nitrogen and ammonium sulfate fertilizer in different pH levels of volcanic ash soil with continuous cultivation of potato. In potassium sulfate-applied plot with a low soil pH, the incidence rate and disease severity of scab were lowest at 84.4% and 28.4%, respectively. Those were lowest among the treatments. Value of potato scab control was 12.3% and marketable yield of potato was highest at 93.2%. In lime nitrogen-applied plot (60 kg/10a), the incidence rate was low at 38.3%, and control value was 23.8% and marketable yield of potato was high at 66.3%. In relatively higher pH soils, the incidence rate of scab was lowest at 38.3% in the lime nitrogen-applied plot (60 kg/10a). Value of potato scab control was 23.8%, which was four times higher than that in sulfur-applied plot. Marketable yield of potato was highest at 66.3% in the lime nitrogen-applied plot. In the lime nitrogen plot infected with potato scab pathogen such as S. acidiscabies and S. scabiei were remarkably lower than other soil amendments at 2.5, 5, and 10 g/L concentrations of lime nitrogen using Glucose Yeast Malt (GYM) medium. In conclusion, this study suggests that potassium sulfate application in low pH soil (less than pH 5) and lime nitrogen application in relatively higher pH soil (more than pH 6) before potato seeding might be helpful to reduce the occurrence of potato scab.

The characteristics of compaction and unconfined compressive strength were investigated by mixing with lime to all soils adjusted by given percentages of two kinds of clays to sand to obtain the most effective distribution of grain size and the optimum lime content for soil stabilization. In addition, unconfined compressive strength and durability tested by adding of sodium metasilicate, sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, sodium gydroxide and magnesium oxide to lime-soil mixture mixed with 8 percent lime to adjusted soil having the mixing percentage of 60 percent of cohesive black clay and 40 percent of sand by weight to get the effect and the optimum content of chemicals. The results obtained were as follows; 1.With the addition of more lime, the optimum moisture content was increased, and the maximum dry density was decreased, whereas the more the amount of clay and the less was the maximum drt density. 2. In the soil having more fine grain size the unconfined compressive strength was larger in the earlier stage of curing period, in accordance with the longer period, the mixing percentages of sand to clay showing the maximum unconfined compressive strength, on the basis of 28-day strength, were 60% : 40% (black clay) and 40% : 60% (brown clay) respectively. 3. The reason why the soil adjusted with black clay was remarkably bigger in the unconfined compressive strength than ones adjusted with brown clay for all specimen of lime-soil mixture was the difference in the kind of clay, the amount of chemical compositions the value of pH. Black clay was mainly composed of halloysite that reacted with lime satisfactorily, whereas the main composition of brown clay was kaolinite that was less effect in the enhance of unconfined compressive strength. Also the difference of unconfined compressive strength was because black clay was larger in the amount of composition of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide in the value of pH affecting directly on the unconfined compressive strength of lime-soil mixture than brown clay. 4. In the lime-soil mixture mixed with 8 percent of lime to soil that mixing percentage of sand to black clay was 60% : 40%, on the standard of 7-day strength, the effect of chemical was arranged in the order of magnesium oxide, sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate, sodium hydroxide and sodium metasilicate. 5. The optimum amount of chemical being applicable to the maximum unconfined compressive strength of lime-chemical-soil mixture was 1 percent by weight for air dry soil in the case of adding sodium carbonated and 0.75 percent on sodium hydroxide, the unconfined compressive strength was increased continuously with increase of the amount of chemical up to 2 percent of chemical content is the lime-chemical-soil mixture added sodium metasilicate, sodium sulfate and magnesium oxide. 6. It was considered that the chemical played and accelerant role of early revelation of strength because the rate of increase of unconfined compressive strength of all of lime-chemical-soil mixtures was largest on the 7-day cured specimen. 7. The effect of test on freezing and thawing after adding suitable amount of chemical on the lime-soil mixture mixed with 8 percent of lime to soil that mixing percentage of sand to black clay was 60% : 40% was arranged in the order of magnesium oxide, sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate, sodium metasilicate and sodium hydroxide.
