  • In this paper, we propose a humanoid active audition system which detects the direction of sound and performs speech recognition using just three microphones. Compared with previous researches, this system which has simpler algorithm, fewer microphones and better amplifier shows better performance. In order to verify our system's performance, we install the proposed active audition system to the home service robot, called Hombot II, which has been developed at the KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology), thus we confirm excellent performance by experimental results

  • The Music Player MAF Player Format of ISO/IEC 23000-2 FDIS consists of MP3 data, MPEG-7 metadata and one optional JPEG image data based on MPEG-4 File Format. However, the current Music Player MAF format does not allow multiple JPEG image data or timed text data. It is helpful to use timed text data and multiple JPEG images in the various multimedia applications. For example, listening material for the foreign language needs an additional book which has text and images, the audio contents which can get image and text data can be helpful to understand the whole story and situations well. In this paper, we propose the detailed file structure in conjunction with MPEG-4 File Format in order to improve the functionalities, which carry multiple image data and text data with synchronization information between MP3 data and other resources.

  • From the PDS scanning, isophote maps and surface luminosity distributions for the late type spiral galaxy NGC 6946 were obtained. Surface luminosity distribution showed that this galaxy can be classified as the Freeman's type II, and the deep spheroidal component was caused as a result of the ring structure in the central part of NGC 6946. Physical parameters-total magnitude ($M_T^B$), effective radius ($R_e^*$), central surface magnitude $U(0)_{CD}$, length scale (${\alpha}^{-1}$), disk-to-bulge ratio (D/B) and mass-to-luminosity ratio (M/L)-were also calculated, and the results show that NGC 6946 belongs to Sc I type galaxy according to the DDO classification, and is to be a fair sample of classification statge T=6.

  • This paper designs and evaluates a complementary filter for fusion of inertial sensor signals. Specifically, the designed filter is applied to inverted pendulum control where the pendulum's angle information is obtained from low-cost tilt and gyroscope sensors instead of an optical encoder. The complementary filter under consideration is a conventional one which consists of low- and high-pass filters. However, to improve the performance of the filter on the gyroscope, we use an integrator in the filter's outer loop. Frequency responses are obtained with both tilt and gyroscope sensors. Based on the frequency response results, we determine appropriate parameter values for the filter. The performance of the designed complementary filter is evaluated by applying the filter to inverted pendulum control. Experiments show that the performance of the designed filter is comparable to that of an optical encoder and low-cost inertial sensors can be used for inverted pendulum control with the heir of sensor fusion.

  • In general, pigment production can be influenced by the medium composition, pH and physical factors such as aeration, agitation, and visible light. The influence of gaseous environments on the pigment production by Monascus purpureus ATCC 16365 was investigated by controlling the DO (dissolved oxygen) concentration through aeration and agitation. When the DO concentration was controlled below 20%, the production of red pigment significantly increased whereas the biomass production decreased. Therefore, the dissolved oxygen concentration could significantly affect the biosynthesis of red pigment as a secondary metabolite by a wild-type filamentous fungus under the anaerobic condition. The results indicate a high potential of enhancing the productivity of the red pigment as a secondary metabolite through controlling the DO concentration.

  • The effect of stabilizing polymer on hGM-CSF production was investigated in suspension cell cultures of transgenic tobacco. Secreted human GM -CSF from cell suspension cultures was detected in the medium at a maximum concentration of 180 ${\mu}g/L$ by ELISA. However, the secreted hGM -CSF was unstable in the medium, and rapidly degraded after day 5. In order to stabilize the secreted hGM-CSF, three stabilizing polymers were tested, polyethylene glycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone and gelatin. Gelatin was the most effective in stabilizing the secreted GM-CSF. Following the addition of 5% (w/v) gelatin, the maximum GM -CSF concentration reached 783 ${\mu}g/L$, a 4.6-fold increase over control.

  • This study presents the results of decoupling of free decay roll test data by discrete wavelet transform. Free roll decay test was performed to decide the coefficients of damping terms in equation of motion. During the experiment, a slight yaw motion was found while the model was in the free roll decay motion. Discrete wavelet transform was applied to the signal to extract the pure roll motion. The results were compared to those of the Fourier transform. DWT was able to decouple the two signals efficiently while the Fourier transform was not.
