  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a nurse presence program on suicide prevention for elders with chronic disease. Method: The subjects were recruited from two different elderly institutions located in D city and K province, Korea. Twenty subjects in the control group received no intervention and nineteen subjects in the experimental group received a nurse presence program. Result: There were more significant decreases in suicide ideation, and the cortisol level and increases in life satisfaction in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: According to the above results, a nurse presence program for elders with a chronic disease decreased stressful events like suicide ideation and increased self esteem through therapeutic interaction. These findings suggest that this program can be used as an efficient independent nursing intervention for elders in a critical situation.

  • Objectives : This study investigated factors related to suicide in high school students and focused on perceived academic performance. Methods : We surveyed 293 grade 10 high-school students in Jeju and Gyeonggi provinces and gave them self-assessment questionnaires. To evaluate the suicide risk, the questionnaire included questions about suicidal thoughts, plans, threats, deliberate self-injury, and suicide attempts from the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI). Also, it included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Locus of Control Scale (LOC), Rosenberg's Self Esteem Scale (RSE) and Perceived Academic Performance (PAP) to identify factors related to suicide in high school students. Results : Depression, hopelessness, and low self-esteem were related with suicidal thoughts, plans, attempts, and severe suicidal ideation (SSI score${geq}$16). In the multivariate analysis, a low level of PAP (OR=3.796, 95%CI 1.280-11.257) was significantly associated with severe suicidal ideation (SSI score${geq}$16). Deliberate self-injury was most prevalent in failing the PAP group and also having a high level of PAP (OR=6.161, 95%CI 1.474-25.760). Conclusion : The authors found that the suicide risk of high school students is related to depression, hopelessness, low self-esteem and a low level of PAP. These results provide significant indicators in planning an adolescent suicide prevention program.

  • This study aims to incorporate resilience factors into current suicide research that is focused on risk factors by validating the role of hope and self-forgiveness, which are potential resilience factors, in thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness, risk factors according to the interpersonal theory of suicide. Data was collected from 316 undergraduates in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. We examined the correlations between self-forgiveness, hope, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness and suicidal ideation and tested moderating effects of self-forgiveness and hope on the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and suicidal ideation and between thwarted belongingness and suicidal ideation. The study results were all significant, indicating that self-forgiveness moderates the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and suicidal ideation and that hope moderates the relationship between thwarted belongingness and suicidal ideation. The result will be a basis for incorporating and resilience factors into the suicide risk assessment when educating suicidal prevention and counseling college students. Further research on studying more risk factors and resilience factors will contribute to establishing more useful and various suicide risk factor evaluation, prevention education, counseling and policies.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relevance of discrimination and violence experienced by persons with disabilities to suicidal ideation of persons with disabilities. The study data used the 2014 national survey of the disabled persons and 6,332 people were included in the analysis. Suicidal ideation was defined as whether or not suicide was actually attempted in the last year. The reference group was a group without suicidal ideation and logistic regression analysis of violence discrimination and experience was performed. The study found that 18.5%(n=1.171) of people with disabilities had suicidal ideation. The risk of suicidal ideation was higher when there was language violence and mental violence because of being disabled. When adolescents experienced sexual harassment, sexual abuse, and sexual violence, the risk of suicide was 16.7(CI=4.22-66.18) times higher. The risk of suicidal ideation was 5.8(CI=2.34-14.6) times higher for those who did not know the violent offenders and 4.08(CI=2.05-8.12) times higher for coping strategies that ignored or tolerated violence. The risk of suicidal ideation was 1.60(CI=1.24-2.08) times higher in the case of discrimination experienced at the time of marriage and it was 2.73(CI=4.22-66.18) times higher when they had always felt the discrimination due to disability. The suicidal ideation that comes from experiences of violent experience and discrimination can appear as actual suicide. Therefore, it is necessary to support the suicide prevention program at the community level, along with the care and consideration of the family and society of the disabled for the well-being of the disabled.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to explore levels of suicidal ideation and identify subgroups of high suicidal risk among the depressed elderly in Korea. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted on secondary data from the 6th (1st year) Korean national health and nutrition examination survey (KNHANES). A total of 239 depressed elders aged 60 or over who participated in the KNHANES. The prevalence of suicidal ideation and its related factors, including sociodemographic, physical, psychological characteristics and quality of life (EQ-5D index) were examined. Descriptive statistics and a decision tree analysis were performed using the SPSS/WIN 23.0 and SPSS Modeler 14.2 programs. Results: Of the depressed elderly, 28.9% had suicidal ideation. Three groups with high suicidal ideation were identified. Predictive factors included perceived stress level, household income level, quality of life and restriction of activity. In the highest risk group were those depressed elderly with moderate and low levels of stress, less than .71 of EQ-5D index and restriction of activity, and 80.0% of these participants had suicidal ideation. The accuracy of the model was 80.8%, its sensitivity 85.9%, and its specificity 68.1%. Conclusion: Multi-dimensional intervention should be designed to decrease suicide among the depressed elderly, particularly focusing on subgroups with high risk factors. This research is expected to contribute itself to the policy design and solution building in the future as it suggests policy implications in preventing the suicide of the depressed elderly.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in suicidal ideation according to general characteristics, and to identify the associated factors of suicidal ideation in rural elderly. Method: We surveyed 168 elderly people using structured questionnaires from March through April, 2013. Data analy was performed using descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$ test, Fisher's Exact test, and multiple regression using the SPSS program. Results: Significantly differences in suicidal ideation score were observed according to drinking state(p=.036), sleep state(p=.013), health state(p=.020), and stress state(p=.049). The associated factors identified in this study significantly explained 13.2% of suicidal ideation. Smoking and sleep state were the most significant factors of suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Based on these results, development of programs for promotion of psychological health in order to reduce suicide rates of the elderly is urgent. In particular when focusing on relations between sleep disturbance and suicide, it is considered that nursing intervention will be required to promote quality of sleep in clinical practices and communities.

  • The suicide rate in South Korea has been the highest among the OECD countries for more than 10 years. In addition, the suicide rate among the rural elderly is much higher than that of the elderly in urban areas and that of younger generations. The purpose of this study was to examine the general tendencies of family ties, community consciousness and suicide ideation of the rural elderly in Korea. Also, this study aimed to verify the mediating effect of community consciousness between family ties and suicidal ideation. The data for this study came from 283 elderly people (over 65 years old) living in 11 villages in South Korea. The data was gathered from July to August 2013. Baron and Kenny's (1986) step based regression from the SPSS Win 18.0 program was used to analyze this data. This study also utilized the Sobel-test. The results of this study are as follows. First, the suicidal ideation of the respondents had a lower score than the median score. However, the magnitude of suicidal ideation was still significant. Second, this study found that family ties and community consciousness have both direct and indirect effects on the reduction of suicidal ideation. Lastly, this study examined the mediating effects of community consciousness. The findings of this study are of great significance because they reconfirmed the importance of establishing a social safety net in local communities to replace adult children who have relocated to urban areas.

  • The purpose of this study was to present the empirical data for the prevention of suicide by analyzing the group differences according to the types of risk factors and protective factors of family members living with dementia patients and the effects of each type on suicidal ideation. This study investigated the characteristics of suicidal ideation among family members of people living with dementia by using a community health survey. It then investigated the effect of each latent group on the suicidal ideation of family members of people living with dementia. Twenty-four risk and protective factors on suicide ideation were analyzed by using Mplus. The four latent classes were high risk - low protective, high risk - high protective, low risk - high protective and low risk - low protective. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the high risk-low protective factor group had the highest suicidal ideation. Based on these results, practical implications and challenges were presented.
