This study was conducted to compare the methane ($CH_4$) production estimated by in vivo (sulfur hexafluoride tracer technique ($SF_6$)) with that of two in vitro rumen simulation (RUSITEC) and gas production (IVGPT)) techniques. Four adult dry Holstein cows, aged $7.4{\pm}3.0$ years and weighing $697{\pm}70$ kg, were used for measuring methane production from five diets by the $SF_6$ technique. The experimental diets were alfalfa hay ($D_1$), corn silage + soybean meal (SBM) (910: 90, $D_2$), Italian rye grass hay +SBM (920: 80, $D_3$), rice straw +SBM (910: 90, $D_4$) and Sudan grass hay +SBM (920: 80, $D_5$). Each diet was individually fed to all 4 cows and 5 feeding studies of 17 d each were conducted to measure the methane production. In the RUSITEC, methane production was measured from triplicate vessels for each diet .In vitro gas production was measured for each of the diets in triplicate syringes. The gas produced after 24 and 48 h was recorded and gas samples were collected in vacuum vials and the methane production was calculated after correction for standard temperature and pressure (STP). Compared to the $SF_6$ technique, estimates of methane production using the RUSITEC were lower for all diets. Methane production estimated from 24 h in vitro gas production was higher (p<0.001) on $D_1$ as compared to that measured by $SF_6$, whereas on $D_2$ to $D_5$ it was lower. Compared to $SF_6$, methane production estimated from 48 h in vitro gas production was higher on all diets. However, methane estimated from the mean of the two measurement intervals (24+48 h/2) in IVGPT was very close to that of $SF_6$ (correlation 0.98), except on $D_1$. The results of our study confirmed that IVGPT is reflective of in vivo conditions, so that it could be used to generate a database on methane production potential of various ruminant diets and to examine strategies to modify methane emissions by ruminants.

This study was conducted to evaluate the milk productivity and nutrient balance in organic dairy farms located at Gochang-gun of Korea with different feed sources. The total number of organic dairy farms was 12 in 2012, 13 in 2013, and 14 in 2014. The numbers of farms and dairy herds were increased each year. The average milk yields in 2012, 2013, and 2014 were 25.5, 24.6, and 24.4 kg/d, respectively. The average milk fat contents in 2012, 2013, and 2014 were 3.5%, 3.6%, and 3.7%, respectively. The average milk protein contents in 2012, 2013, and 2014 were 3.3%, 3.4%, and 3.4% in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively. Although the average milk yield of organic dairy farms was 9 kg/cows/d less than the average milk yield of other dairy farms in Korea, milk fat and protein contents of organic dairy farms were higher than those of other dairy farms. Alfalfa hay, oat hay, corn silage, rye grass silage, Sudan grass silage, rice straw, and barley silage were commonly used as forage sources in organic dairy farms. The average silage intake (15.6 kg/cow/d) of organic dairy farms in 2013 was higher (P < 0.05), while the average hay intake (5.1 kg/cow/d) in 2014 was higher (P < 0.05) than that of other feed intake. Net energy for lactation ($NE_L$) and metabolizable protein (MP) were calculated in accordance with NRC (2001). Net energy for lactation intake was higher (P < 0.05) while MP intake was lower (P < 0.05) than NRC recommendation values in 2013 and 2014. These results indicate that domestic organic dairy farms should use feed considering energy and protein balance recommended by NRC.
The effect of supplementing the diet of grazing dairy cows with fish oil (FO) and linseed oil (LSO) on milk conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) was investigated. Sixteen Holstein cows (17019 DIM) were assigned into two groups and fed a grain supplement (8.0 kg/d; DM basis) containing 800 g of saturated animal fat (CONT) or 200 g FO and 600 g LSO (FOLSO). All cows grazed together on Sudan grass pasture ad libitum and were fed the treatment diets for 3 wks. Cows were milked twice a day and milk samples were collected during the last three days of the trial. Milk production (24.89 and 22.45 kg/d), milk protein percentage (2.76 and 2.82) and milk protein yield (0.68 and 0.64 kg/d) for the CONT and FOLSO diets, respectively, were not affected (p>0.05) by treatment diets. Milk fat percentage (3.90 and 2.86) and milk fat yield (0.97 and 0.64 kg/d) were lower (p<0.05) with the FOLSO diet compared with the CONT diet. The concentration and yield of milk cis-9 trans-11 CLA were higher (p<0.05) with the FOLSO diet (2.56% of total FA and 16.44 g/d, respectively) than the CONT diet (0.66% of total FA and 6.44 g/d, respectively). The concentrations of milk trans C18:1 and vaccenic acid (VA) were higher (p<0.05) with the FOLSO diet (13.53 and 7.48% of total FA, respectively) than the CONT diet (3.69 and 2.27% of total FA, respectively). In conclusion, supplementing the diet of grazing cows with FO and LSO increased milk cis-9 trans-11 CLA content but reduced milk fat content and yield.

This study conducted to evaluate effects of popped soybean on levels of ruminal peptides and blood amino acids in Holstein calves fed sudan grass hay as a forage source and popped (PSB) soybean as a concentrate supplement. At 0, 2, 4 and 6 h after feeding, rumen fluid and blood samples were collected from the rumen and jugular vein, respectively, and amino acids, peptides and other nitrogen-containing compounds in the rumen were analyzed. Ruminal pH tended to be higher in the RSB than in the PSB treatments, and declined upto 4 h after feeding, since then increased in both treatments. The concentrations of ammonia-N in all treatments increased upto 2 h after feeding, and then decreased gradually with time after feeding. The concentrations of ammonia N in the rumen were not significantly different between the treatments, however, those in RSB treatment appeared to be higher. Also, protein concentrations in the rumen were not significantly different between the treatments. Peptide productions were the highest at 2 h after feeding in the group fed RSB which is rapidly degradable in rumen, whereas those in the group fed PSB which is slowly degradable in rumen were maximized at 4 h after feeding. The concentration of total free essential amino acids in plasma was higher in the RSB treatment than in the PSB, but disappearance rates of these amino acids out of plasma was higher in the PSB treatment than in the RSB treatment. Disappearance rates of free non-essential amino acids in plasma were not significantly different between the treatments. Consequently, this study implies that the production of peptide and utilization of blood amino acid may be controlled by the modification of protein degradability.

Salinity is one of the most relevant abiotic factor limiting crop yield and its net primary productivity. In addition, salinity induces an increased stress ethylene synthesis in plants which, in turn, exacerbate the responses to the stressor. Bacterial single or co-inoculation effect was tested using previously characterized plant growth promoting (PGP) bacteria Brevibacterium iodinum RS16 and Methylobacterium oryzae CBMB20 on maize and sorghum-sudan grass hybrid under different concentrations of NaCl. Non-inoculated maize and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid showed 33.4% and 20.0% reduction in seed germination under highest NaCl (150 mM) level tested. However, under the same NaCl concentration, co-inoculation with B. iodinum RS16 and M. oryzae CBMB20 PGP strains increased the seed germination in maize (16.7%) and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (4.4%). In Gnotobiotic growth pouch experiments conducted for maize and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, co-inoculation of PGP B. iodinum RS16 and M. oryzae CBMB20 mitigated the salinity stress and promoted root length by 22.9% and 29.7%, respectively. Thus the results of this study could help in development of potential bioinoculants that may be suitable for crop production under saline conditions.

Background: The production method of ginseng seedlings for ginseng cultivation is very important to ensure healthy rooting system as well as high quality, and yield of the resultant plants. This study was carried out to compare the growth characteristics of 2-year-old ginseng plants that were produced from seedlings grown in self soil nursery (SSN), nursery soil (NS) or hydroponic culture (HC). Methods and Results: The shading prop used was composed of four-layered 4 polyethylene (blue 3 + black 1) shade screen. The management of main field was done by inserting oil cake (1,200 kg/10 a) and then allowing Sudan grass to grow for a year. Seedling transplantation was carried out on April 6. Root growth was measured on October 25. Root weight was observed to be excellent at 6.0 g, following SSN transplantation. Root length was 21.2 cm for HC seedlings, but these plants had a physiological disorder (i.e., rusty root), in 83.5% plants of this treatment. The ratio of PD/PT (protopanaxadiol saponins / protopanaxatriol saponins) was higher in NS seedlings. Plant analysis revealed that Fe content was lower in HC seedlings with high rustiness. The growth of 2-years-old ginseng was different following these varying seedling cultivation methods, but seedlings from NS were not different from those grown in SSN. Conclusions: For the propagation of 2-year-old ginseng plants, NS seedlings may be a good substitute for SSN seedlings.
This study was conducted to effect promotion of fall potato growth in the place which green manual crops had been previously cultivated, crushed and tilled and polyethylene transparent vinyl had been mulched from Aug. 5 to Aug. 29 in 1997. The maximum temperature of below-ground at the depth of 10cm was $42^{\circ}C$ during the mulching period, and the pH and the organic compound content of soil was very increased by the cultivation of green manual crops and the mulching of polyethylene transparent vinyl. The total yields of green manual crops which had been previously cultivated were as the following orders; the hybrid of sudan grass, soybean, alfalfa, otherwise, fresh weight of stems and the tuber yield of fall potato were significantly affected in the plot of soybean + fall potato after the soil solarization with the mulching. As these results, it was possible to improve crops growth and to sterilize soil by the mulching treatment of polyethylene vinyl after cultivation of green manual crops during the high temperature of the summer season.

This study was conducted to evaluate on agronomic characteristics, dry matter (DM) and digestible dry matter (DDM) yields of summer sowing sorghum hybrids (Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench) at Seongju in Gyeongbuk from 2013 to 2014. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications. Sorghum hybrids were seeded $31^{st}$ of July, 2013 and 2014. Sorghum hybrids were harvested on $3^{rd}$ November, 2013 and $5^{th}$ November, 2014. The observed average heading date was October 5, 8 and 9 for Sordan79, Sprint and SX17 respectively. The DM yield of 'SX17', 'Sordan79', and 'Sprint' was 24.2, 23,9 and 23.4 ton/ha, respectively and DM yield of those were significantly higher (p<0.05) than other three cultivars in 2013. DM yield of 'SX17', 'Sprint' and 'Sordan79' was 20.8, 20.0 and 19.3 ton/ha, respectively and DM yield of those was significantly higher (p<0.05) than other three cultivars in 2014. The DDM yield of 'SX17', 'Sordan79', and 'Sprint' was also higher (p<0.05) than other three cultivars in 2013 and 2014. ADF content of sorghum hybrids was low, whereas DDM was high. The results of this study indicated that traditional sorghum-sudangrass hybrids ('SX17', 'Sordan79') and sudan grass-sudangrass hybrid ('Sprint') than late flowering sorghum-sudangrass hybrid ('PACF8350') and sorghum-sorghum hybrids ('SS405', 'Sugar grazer') would be recommended for DM and DDM yields in the southern Korea.
Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) is a promising forage crop that is resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses, and has a capability to grow well not only in the fertile soil, but also in the poor and dry soil, The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of increased fertilizer application level on the productivity and Quality of pearl millet in the old and newly reclaimed upland soils of Suwon, Chungju, Jeonju, Jinju and Jeju in Korea from 1986 to 1988, Plant height, green fodder yield, protein content and digestibility were increased by the increased fertilizer application level. However, the increased fertilizer application caused lodging, so that the plants grown above one meter in canopy height would be desiable to be clipped remaining 20cm above the ground surface before lodging, and fed to cattle, Mean green yields of the N 45-60kg/l0a application were 12.7-13.4t/l0a in the old upland soil. Increased phosphorus and potash fertilizer application also increased productivity, especially with potash fertilizer effect being higher than that of phosphorus fertilizer, In the newly reclaimed upland soil, improved and doubled fertilizer application plot of 60-60-40-4000kg/10a in N-P$_2$O$\sub$5/-K$_2$O-Compost was 38% higher being 12.6t/10a of green fodder yield as compared with standard fertilizer application plot, Pearl millet productivity and Quality were higher than those of maize and sorghum/sudan grass hybrids, particularly in green fodder yield, protein content and digestibility.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of ground cover treatments on the nutrient contribution in a 'Niitaka' pear ($Pyrus$$pyriforia$) orchard. Treatments included; 1) sod culture, 2) winter cover crop [ryegrass+hairy vetch], and 3) winter [ryegrass+hairy vetch]+summer [greensolgo (sudan grass ($Sorghum$$bicolor$ L.))+ nemajanghwang (crotalaria ($Crotalaria$$juncea$ L.)] cover crops. Ryegrass and hairyvetch were seeded with 6.4 kg/10a and 3.0 kg/10a, respectively, on October 17 of 2008, and greensolgo and nemajanghwang were seeded with 2.0 kg/10a and 3.0 kg/10a, respectively, on June 4 of 2009 at a diligent farmer in Boseong in Chonnam. Winter+summer cover crops provided greater amounts of dry weight, followed by winter cover crop and sod culture. The difference of amounts of dry weight from the ground covers affected to the levels of total N, P, and K contents, which were greater nutrient levels than those of recommended nutrient requirement for satisfying 10- to 12-year-old pear tree growth. Greater amounts of dry weight from the ground covers increased organic matter and concentrations of K and Mg in soil. Foliar nutrient concentrations, as an indicator of nutrient status of a tree, were not affected by application of ground cover treatments.
