Based on the consideration that the cavitation would affect the operation stability of miniature pumps, the 3-D turbulent cavitating flow in a test pump was simulated by using a mixed cavitation model and k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model. In order to investigate the influence of inlet geometry parameters on the cavitation performance of the miniature pump, two more impellers are designed for comparison. Based on the results, the following conclusions are drawn: 1) Cavitation performance of the double suction shaft-less miniature pump having different impeller is equivalent to the centrifugal pump having ordinary size, though the flow passage at impeller inlet is small; 2) The miniature pump having radial impeller can produce much higher pump head, but lower cavitation performance than that having the impeller based on the conventional design method; 3) It is believed that by applying the double suction design, the miniature pump achieved relatively uniform flow pattern upstream the impeller inlet, which is favorable for improving cavitation performance.
Flow analysis was carried out for a double-suction centrifugal pump. Impeller-only models and a full pump model were used to simulate the velocity field and the pressure field of the pump. Heads and efficiencies were calculated with flow rates in order to obtain general performance of the pump. The calculation results were compared to the experimental data, and satisfactory results were obtained. Thus, it may be said that the CFD serves as a useful tool for pump designs.

A Numerical analysis has been used to predict the performance in the automotive water pump with double discharge single suction. The influence of parameters such as coolant flow rate, rotational speed, ratio of blade height and clearance has been investigated. Also, the prediction of hydraulic performances such as static pressure rise, shaft power, hydraulic power and pump efficiency is carried out on the water pump including an impeller and a volute casing. A full size water pump test bench has been developed to validate the CFD flow model. Discharge flow rate, suction pressure, discharge pressure, rotational speed and torque measurements are provided. Coolant temperature is 8$0^{\circ}C$, water tank pressure is 1 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and flow rates vary.

An experimental study was performed on the collision nozzle system that generates microbubble by air self-suction using a venturi nozzle. This study experimentally investigates the pressure of a pump and a dissolution tank, water flow rate, air self-suction amount and microbubble generation amount. The experimental conditions were varied by changing the diameter of the collision nozzle (de=4,5,6,7,8mm), the pumping power(0.5hp, 1.0hp) and the capacity of the dissolution tank(4.4L, 8/8L). The pressure change of the pump according to the outlet diameter of the collision nozzle showed that the 1.0hp pump power operated more stably than the 0.5hp pump. The pressure change in the dissolution tank was shown to decrease rapidly as the outlet diameter of the nozzle increased. The flow rate of recirculating water was shown to increase as the nozzle diameter increased. Additionally, it was shown that the pump capacity of 1.0hp increased the flow rate more than that of 0.5hp. The self-suction air flow rate was shown to occur above de=6mm, and the air flow rate increased as the nozzle diameter increased. Also, as the pump capacity increased, the self-suction amount of air increased. It was shown that the amount of microbubble less than 50mm generated was maximum when the nozzle diameter was 6mm, the pump power was 1.0hp, and the dissolution tank capacity was 8.8L.

With the recent increase in international trade volume the trade volume through ships is also continuously increasing. The treatment of ballast water goes through the following five steps, samples are taken and analyzed at each step, and samples are obtained using a suction pump. These suction pumps have low efficiency and thus need to be improved. In this study, it is to optimize the form of the impeller which affects directly improvements of performance to determine the capacity of suction pump and to fulfill the purpose of this research. To do it, we have carried out parametric design as an input variable, geometric form for the impeller. By conducting the flow analysis for the optimum form, it has confirmed the value of improved results and achieved the purpose to study in this paper. It has selected the necessary parameter for optimizing the form of the pump impeller and analyzed the property using experiment design. And it can reduce the factor of parameter for local optimization from findings to analyze the property of form parameter. To perform MOGA(Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm) it has generated response surface using parameters for local optimization and conducts the optimization using multi-objective genetic algorithm. with created experiment cases, it has performed the computational fluid dynamics with model applying the optimized impeller form and checked that the capacity of the pump was improved. It could verify the validity concerning the improvement of pump efficiency, via optimization of pump impeller form which is suggested in this study.

In double-suction centrifugal pumps, it was found that cavitation instabilities occur with vibration and a periodic chugging noise. The present study attempts to identify cavitation instabilities in the double-suction centrifugal pump by the experiment and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Cavitation instabilities in the tested pump were classified into three types of instabilities. The first one, in a range of cavitation number higher than breakdown cavitation number, is cavitation surge with a violent pressure oscillation. The second one, in a range of cavitation number higher than the cavitation number of cavitation surge, is considered to be rotating cavitation and causes the pressure oscillation due to the interaction of rotating cavitation with the impeller. Last one, in a range of cavitation number higher than the cavitation number of rotating cavitation, is considered to be a surge type instability.
CFD analyses of the three-dimensional turbulent flow in the impeller and diffuser of an axial flow pump including suction and discharge parts are presented and compared with experimental data. The purpose of the current study is to validate the CFD method for the performance analysis of the main coolant pump for SMART and to investigate the effect of suction and discharge shapes on the pump performance. To generate a performance curve, not only the design point but also the off-design points were computed. The results were compared with available experimental data in terms of head generated. At the design point, the analysis accurately predicts the experimental head value. In the range of the higher flow rates, the results are also in very good agreement with the experimental data, in magnitude but also in terms of slope of variation. For lower flow rates, the results shows that the analysis considering the suction and discharge well describe the typical S-shape performance curve of the axial pump.

A suction-saturation control technique based on flow pump system was developed to investigate hydraulic properties in unsaturated soils. The flow pump system is designed based on the principle of the axis-translation technique and triaxial equipment, and gives the suction-time and suction-saturation curves, the primary relationship needed for interpreting the response of unsaturated soils and link between theory and the material properties in unsaturated soil mechanics. Using the suction-saturation control technique, suction-time relationship and soil-water retention curve (SWRC) during hydraulic hysteresis were investigated with different net confining pressures and porosities. Three types of soils-two sands and a silt were used in this paper. This paper showed the effect of the hysteresis on the SWRC due to different net confining pressures and porosities. This means that a careful decision must be made as to which condition is to be modeled, since the delicate difference of the conditions in physical modeling can cause the different experimental output.
The objective of this study is to investigate the suitable design for a domestic CWP pump, which is used in cooling-water intakes for the unit 3 and 4 of Yeonggwang nuclear power plant. All the simulations are performed, using CFD method with a commercial code STAR-CCM+ version 3.02. After modeling a present design of the pump, the flow around the rotating blade was calculated by using quasi-static method and sliding mesh method with the almost same condition as an actual state. Based on fundamental simulations with various depth of sea water, the reference pressure for the boundary condition of the present study was decided. To verify the reliability of the calculation results, the suction flow rate of the data was compared with that of the experimental data. As a result of this comparison, it is confirmed that two results are fairly consistent. For the improvement of the suction flow rate, computational analysis was done by changing a flow channel and blade shapes. It is shown that the suction flow rate of the new pump was improved.
An auto sampling and filtering unit was developed for monitoring automation of a fermentation process and its performance was evaluated. The automatic sampling and filtering unit was constructed with a glass filter, a diaphragm suction pump, and a flow direction change valve. To evaluate operating stability, delivery volumes of the suction pump were measured according to the experimental conditions of cellulose powder, pore size of the glass filter and suction head of the pump. The developed unit could deliver the sample solution under any experimental conditions except the filter pore size of $16{\mu}m$ and the suction head of 20cm. In case of the suction head of 30cm, the pump could not deliver the sample solution at all. Concentrations of the sample solutions were converged on those of the standard glucose solution after 8 minutes from the initial sampling time. The relative error of concentration between the sample and the standard solution showed 3.8, 4.8, 7.0% for the 1, 3, 5% contents of cellulose powder, respectively.
