A Study of Heat St Smoke Evacuation Characteristics by the Changing of Operational Method of Tunnel Fan Shaft Ventilation System for Fire on Subway Train Vehicle (지하철 화재시 본선터널 환기시스템에 따른 열 및 연기배출특성)

  • The smoke control system in subway platform is not only using for smoke exhaust facility but also using ventilation system. For this reason, smoke vent effectiveness is depending on its position, ventilating volume capacity and the vent method. In this study, the passenger's evacuation time was calculated for the case of fire on sloped subway train vehicle in subway platform. In order to recommend the mechanical smoke exhaust operation mode, SES (Subway Environmental Simulation) was used to predict the airflow of the inlet and outlet tunnel for the subway station. Fire dynamics Simulator(FDS) was used the SES's velocity boundary conditions to calculate the smoke density and temperature under the condition of fire on stopped subway train vehicle at the platform. We compared smoke density and temperature distributions for each 6 types of smoke exhaust systems to clarify the characteristics of smoke and hot air exhaust effectiveness from the result of fire simulation.

  • The subway can transport a lot of people at a certain route at once, and the railway and the platform are underground, so it is advantageous to use the ground space efficiently. But If a fire occurs in a subway that is used by an unspecified number of people, such as the Daegu Subway Fire Disaster, many casualties can occur. As a result of the previous research, it was confirmed that the performance of the ventilation system of the old subway platform was remarkably degraded. Therefore, in this study, based on the experimental results of the previous research, we confirmed the flow of the hot and CO flows according to the ventilation mode in the case of fire by three - dimensional numerical analysis. As a result, it was found that the old ventilation system could not maintain the hot air temperature below the reference value for 4 minutes based on the evacuation time of the platform, and when the ventilation performance was enhanced by adding Oversized Exhaust Ports at the upper part of the platform, And the temperature of the heat flow can be maintained.

  • Two major parameters, i.e. carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and particulate matters smaller than $10{\mu}m\;(PM_{10})$, were selected as the index pollutants in managing indoor air quality. The former pollutant, $CO_2$, is the index that shows the ventilation status and is exhaled by passengers when they breathe in train or subway. It is generally known that high $CO_2$ concentration in the vehicle may be decreased by insufficient air-tightening vehicle bodies and the air is ventilated when vehicles stop at the station and doors open. However, there is no established proof or quantitatively identified data on how much the $CO_2$ concentration is reduced when ventilation is done while doors are opened. In this study, $CO_2$ concentrations were measured in 6 lines of Korail and one line of Seoul Metro subway linesand a theoretical approach was takento predict the changing trend of $CO_2$ concentrations during the operation of vehicle by using $CO_2$ dilution factor through natural ventilation. As a result, the change could be quantified and it was found that app. 35% of indoor $CO_2$ was removed through natural ventilation.

Box Model Approach for Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Management in a Subway Station Environment

  • Air quality in a subway tunnel has been crucial in most of the subway environments where IAQ could be affected by many factors such as the number of passengers, the amount and types of ventilation, train operation factors and other facilities. A modeling approach has been introduced to manage the general IAQ in a subway station. Field surveys and $CO_2$ measurements were initially conducted to analyze and understand the relationship between indoor and outdoor air quality while considering internal pollution sources, such as passengers and subway trains, etc. The measurement data were then employed for the model development with other statistical information. For the model development, the algorithm of simple continuity was set up and applied to model the subway IAQ concerned, while considering the major air transport through staircases and tunnels. Monitored $CO_2$ concentration on the concourse and platform were correlated with modeling results where the correlation values for the concourse and platform were $R^2=0.96$ and $R^2=0.75$, respectively. It implies that the box modeling approach introduced in this study would be beneficial to predict and control the indoor air quality in subway environments.

  • After installation of platform screen door (PSD) in subway stations, particulate matters (PMs), which are originally ventilated through the platform, are accumulated inside the tunnel of the subway system. It deteriorates an air quality inside the tunnel. To ventilate the accumulated PMs inside the tunnel, the natural ventilator which are located inside the tunnel (namely, tunnel ventilation system) are used as only one circulation system. In addition, the installation of PSD can affect to the aerodynamic variations inside the tunnel, since the PSD system was not considered factor when the tunnel ventilation system was designed. However, the researches about the tunnel ventilation system have not been adequate. Therefore, this study is carried out with two objectives: 1) to measure the velocity of air current by the train-induced wind, when the train passes through the tunnel, and 2) to investigate the typical patterns of air current by quantitatively evaluating the characteristics of inflow/outflow of air current which passes through the natural ventilation system. This study can suggest the basic standard to newly design the tunnel of the subway system as well as the ventilation system.

  • In this study boundary velocity which is one of the important boundary conditions for numerical simulation for subway station on fire are experimentally obtained. The tests were conducted according to its operating mode of the ventilation systems in the platform: smoke extraction ventilation mode in occurrence of fire and normal ventilation mode for air conditioning. Velocities are measured at various points on the platform. To examine smoke extraction and air supply capacity in the platform level, air velocities were checked on opening vents. Numerical analysis under normal ventilation mode without fire is conducted by using measured boundary conditions, and the numerical results are compared with the measured velocities on the platform.

  • The smoke propagating distances are measured in case that a fire occurs within the subway railroad tunnel. The tunnel is 800m long and the dimension of the cross-section is. Three vertical shafts exist for smoke ventilation. The experiments are performed using the 1/50 reduced-scale model. The smoke propagating distances are measured by thermocouples and by visualization for the accuracy. In order to understand the effect of a fire size and ventilation capacity of the shafts on the smoke propagating distance, 9 test scenarios are chosen. Based on the results, the smoke propagating distance is shown to be important criteria for the ventilation design of the tunnel.

  • Conserving clean air and removing contaminants and particular matters accumulated in the ventilation system of the subway stations are key issue for green railway environment. There is no national guideline or industrial regulations to sustain clean duct and ventilation system, which requires rapid reformation of cleaning procedure and system. In fact, accumulated various particular matters and dusts can occur secondary air contamination and become a primary health harm factor for subway passengers. This study investigates various duct cleaning technologies and trends. In additon, effective cleaning method with an automated robot device is proposed. In particular, current dust cleaning technologies and duct cleaning robots are analyzed based on their functions and feasibilities. The proposed design of automated device is expected to save the operating cost of subway HVAC system and sustain clean air environment.

  • This study aim to derive the operation method of a comprehensive ventilation system which is capable of providing passengers with safe exit paths from platforms in onboard The situations. The airflow distributions in subway platforms under 13 types of tunnel vent system for a double track stop condition was calculated and having analyzed diffusion behaviors of smoke and heat exhaust in such states by performing 13 kinds of different ventilation scenarios by using a 3-D Fire Dynamic Simulation (FDS) simulation model to clarify the safety evaluation for the heat and smoke exhaust on subway fire events.
