This paper is results of experimental and nunerical works on the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel. Centrifuge model tests were performed to simulate the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnels having cross sections of national road and subway tunnels. Model experiments were carried out with changing the cut slope and the slope of filling ground surface. Displacements of tunnel lining resulted from artificially accelerated gravitational force up to 40g of covered material used in model tests, were measured during centrifuge model tests. In model tests, Jumunjin Standard Sand with the relative density of 80 % and the zinc plates were used for the covered material and the flexible tunnel lining, respectively. Basic soil property tests were performed to obtain it's the property of Jumumjin Standard Sand. Shear strength parameters of Jumunjin Standard Sand were obtained by performing the triaxial compression tests. Direct shear tests were also carried out to find the mechanical properties of the interface between the lining and the covered material. Numerical analysis with the commercially available program of FLAC were performed to compare with results of centrifuge model experiment In numerical modelling. Mohr-Coulomb elasto-plastic constitutive model was used to simulaye the behavoor of Jumunjin Standard Sand and the interface element between the lining and the covered material was implemented to simulate the interaction between them. Compared results between model tests and numerical estimation with respect to displacement of the lining showed in good agreements.

In this study, research was performed to establish the measurement and frequency of analysis for maintenance monitoring by investigation of tunnel maintenance monitoring system in the tunnel which was installed in the Seoul metro line 5, 7 and 8, using that the domestic and foreign application case, results of analyzed maintenance monitoring in the domestic tunnel and legal safety management standard of the facility. The results of the monitoring management about analysis frequency to the present are considered that the problem about measuring frequency does not occur. According to the analysis results of the maintenance monitoring which are located on the 5, 6th subway line, they are analyzed that the stress of concrete lining and reinforced bar are converged gradually after 45 months. Therefore Monitoring of measurement and analysis frequency is conduct more often within about 4 years after the measuring instrument installation. Four years later, slowing the frequency of measurement is considered reasonable.
Tunnel collapse often occurs during deep underground tunneling (> 40 m depth) in South Korea. Natural cavities as well as water supply pipes, sewer pipes, electric power cables, artificial cavities created by subway construction are complexly distributed in the artificial ground in the shallow depths of the urban area. For deep tunnel excavation, it is necessary to understand the properties of the ground which is characterized by porous elements and various geological structures, and their influence on the stability of the ground. This study analyzed geological factors for risk assessment in deep excavation in South Korea based on domestic and overseas case study. As a result, a total of 7 categories and 38 factors were derived. Factors with high weights were fault and fault clay, differential stress, rock type, groundwater and mud inrush, uniaxial compressive strength, cross-sectional area of tunnel, overburden thickness, karst and valley terrain, fold, limestone alternation, fluctuation of groundwater table, tunnel depth, dyke, RQD, joint characteristics, anisotropy, rockburst and so forth.

As we learned in Daegu subway fire accident, fire in the railway tunnel is prone to develop to large disaster due to the limitation of smoke control and smoke exhaust. In railway tunnel, in order to ensure fire safety, fire prevention and fighting systems are installed by quantitative risk assessment results. Therefore, in this research, developed the program to establish quantitative risk assessment and suggested quantitative safety assessment method including fire scenarios in railway tunnel, fire and evacuation analysis model, fatality estimate model and societal risk criteria. Moreover, this method applys to plan preventing disaster for Honam high speed railway tunnel. As results, we presented the proper distance of escape route and societal risk criteria.

In urban areas, blast excavation adjacent to tunnels is carried out frequently. It is generally required to secure static and dynamic stability of nearby tunnel structures for any such activities. Although there is some national guidelines for static safety, there is little guides to risk zoning controling the dynamic behavior of the underground structures. In this study, impacts on the blast-induced vibration are investigated using numerical study. An attempt to define the restricted area of blast adjacent to subway tunnels was also made. Particular concerns were given to tunnel depth and ground types. By carrying out the parametric study on depth and ground patterns, the envelope of blast distance of which dynamic response on the lining is controlled under 1 cm/sec, is established. It is shown that the increase in depth has increased the required safety distance slightly until the distance of 3.5 times of the tunnel diameter. Despite small changes in safety distance, it can be generally said that the effects of depth and stiffness of the ground is not significant in controlling the particle velocity of the tunnel linings.

When tunnelling with TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), accessibility to tunnel face is very limited because tunnel face is mostly occupied by a bunch of machines. Existing techniques that can predict ground condition ahead of TBM tunnel are extremely limited. In this study, the TBM Resistivity Prediction (TRP) system has been developed for predicting anomalous zone ahead of tunnel face utilizing electrical resistivity. The applicability and prediction accuracy of the developed system has been verified by performing field tests at subway tunnel construction site in which an EPB (Earth Pressure Balanced) shield TBM was used for tunnelling work. The TRP system is able to predicts the location, thickness and electrical properties of anomalous zone by performing inverse analysis using measured resistivity of the ground. To make field tests possible, an apparatus was devised to attach electrode to tunnel face through the chamber. The electrode can be advanced from the chamber to the tunnel face to fully touch the ground in front of the tunnel face. In the 1st field test, none of the anomalous zone was predicted, because the rock around the tunnel face has the same resistivity and permittivity with the rock ahead of tunnel face. In the 2nd field test, 5 m thick anomalous zone was predicted with lower permittivity than that of the rock around the tunnel face. The test results match well with the ground condition predicted, respectively, from geophysical exploration, or directly obtained either from drilling boreholes or from daily observed muck condition.
In the study, a new non-open cut tunnel steel pipe method using slot hole has been developed. As is overcomes shortcomings of conventional methods, it is applied to the field. The main concept of the new method is the steel pipe pumping system with slot holes which, by means of formation slot holes between each steel pipe, applied to the magnitude of the relaxed earth pressure caused by excavation to the ground to prevent ground displacement. The stability of the support members and effect of displacement control of the new method were verified through several ways as numerical analysis and site test. The new method was applied to the construction of a 11.5m wide, 7.4m high and 50m long section that passes side subway and large buildings in inner city. By applying the new method, tunnel construction was successfully completed in 6 months. It decreases the construction period to 30% compared to that of conventional methods, and ground was almost negligible.
In spite of drastic development of underground technology too many uncertainties still exist in design and construction of underground structures. Estimation of ground parameters might be one of those uncertainties in design of underground structures. It is not an easy task to estimate the parameters reasonably well in advance in the design stage. The main purpose of this paper is the best parameter estimation in the underground structures. In order to estimate unknown model parameters from the in-eitu measurements as well as prior estimates, the Extended Bayesian Method(EBM) is utilized and implemented with Finite Element Program. The parameter estimation model utilized in this study is applied to two underground structures : the one Pusan subway tunnel: and the other Darlington intake tunnel in Canada, and the effectiveness of the proposed model is illustrated.

Estimation of total construction period and cost in the early stage of the project is very important. Simulation is one of the method considering proper compound such as tools, materials for effective construction management and estimating and analysing affected factors to construction through making suitable process. This study is to develop the model by using Arena simulation considering limited facts like blast time in a subway tunnel construction of both sides inner city. Developed model is easily useful type by using Visual Basic program, and can obtain total construction period and cost as a result. It could be used as a decision making tool in early stage of the construction.
In general, a three dimensional ground behaviour during tunneling is simulated by using two dimensional analysis programs in consideration of a certain ratio of stress or strain distribution to take into account the effect of construction stage by a tunnel face advance. A series of trree dimensional analyses was conducted to deduce a normalized displacement (surface or crown settlement) curve in longitudinal direction, of which curve is reflecting an effect of a tunnel advance under a various condition. And, by using try and error technique, two dimensional analyses were carried out to determine an optimum stress distribution ratio for a settiement curve coincided with the curve obtained by three dimensional analyses. Finally, monitored results from a subway tunnel were compared with two dimensional analysis results for varification of the deduced stress distribution ratio as well as the two dimensional analysis program employed in this study.
