  • In this study, we have observed PM-10 and $CO_2$ concentration in the subway cabins and analyzed the factors affecting air quality using a multivariate statistical analysis. The measurements have been conducted at Seoul metropolitan subway lines. The results show that the mean concentration of the PM-10 and $CO_2$ inside subway cabins is in the range of 62.6 to 108.0 ${\mu}g/m^3$ and 907 to 2,008 ppm, respectively. $CO_2$ level in specific sections during the rush hours has exceeded air quality guidelines for public transportation, which requires designated train ventilation controls. Correlation and regression analyses of influencing factors imply that $CO_2$ level is severely influenced by the number of passengers and PM-10 level is also correlated with the number of passengers. In particular, PM-10 level in the cabins indicates a positive correlation with outdoor PM-10 level. In addition, the PM concentration has been highly affected by the number of passengers and distance between stations.

  • This paper considers subway routing problem. Given a schedule of train to be routed by a railway stock, the routing problem determines a sequence of trains while satisfying turnaround time and maintenance restrictions. Generally, the solution of routing problem is generated from set partition formulation solved by column generation method, a typical integer programming approach for train-set. However, we find the characteristics of metropolitan subway which has a simple rail network, a few end stations and 13 departure-arrival patterns. We reflect a turn-around constraint due to spatial limitations has no existence in conventional railroad. Our objective is to minimize the number of daily train-sets. In this paper, we develop two basic techniques that solve the subway routing problem in a reasonable time. In first stage, we formulate the routing problem as a Min-cost-flow problem. Then, in the second stage, we attempt to normalize the distance covered to each routes and reduce the travel distance using our heuristic approach. Applied to the current daily timetable, we could find the subway routings, which is an approximately 14% improvement on the number of train-sets reducing 15% of maximum traveling distance and 8% of the standard deviation.

  • In some sections of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway, severe congestion can be observed during rush hours and on specific days. The subway operators have been conducting regular surveys to measure the level of congestion on trains: the results are then used to make plans for congestion reduction. However, the survey has so far focused just on train' congestion and has been unable to determine non-recurring congestion due to special events. This study develops an algorithm to estimate the platform congestion rate by time using individual public transportation card data. The algorithm is evaluated by comparison of the estimated congestion rate and the ground truth data that are actually observed at non-transfer subway stations on Seoul subway line 2. The error rates are within ${pm}2%$ and the performance of the algorithm is fairly good. However, varying walking times from gates to platforms, which are applied to both non-peak periods and peak time periods, are needed to improve the algorithm.

  • When the fire occur in the deeply underground subway station, the difficulties of passenger evacuation are expected because of many stairs to the exit. In this study, SOONGSIL-University station (7 line, 47m depth) is the one of the deepest subway stations of the each line in the Seoul metro. The numerical computational-simulation was performed for the fire driven flow in the subway station. Hot and smoke flow was analyzed from the simulation results. The proper plan of evacuation against fire was considered through the results. The fire driven flow was simulated using FDS code in which LES method was applied. The Heat Release Rate was 10MW and the ultrafast model was applied for the growing model of the fire source. The proper mesh size was determined from the characteristic length of fire size. The parallel computational method was employed to compute the flow and heat eqn's in the meshes, which are about 10,000,000, with 6cpu of the linux clustering machine.

  • Subway is a future-oriented means of transportation that can be safely and quickly mass transport many passengers than buses and taxis. Congestion growth due to the increase of the metro users is one of the factors that hinder citizens' rights to comfortably use the subway. Accordingly, congestion prediction in the subway is one of the ways to maximize the use of passenger convenience and comfort. In this paper, we monitor the level of congestion in real time via the existing congestion on the metro using multiple regression analysis and big data processing, as well as their departure station and arrival station information More information about the transfer stations offer a personalized congestion prediction system. The accuracy of the predicted congestion shows about 81% accuracy, which is compared to the real congestion. In this paper, the proposed prediction and recommendation application will be a help to prediction of subway congestion and user convenience.

  • This study attempted to find an alternative method for fine dust control in the pre-exiting facilities of metro-subway stations. A new double-layer design was proposed for the MVAC (mechanical ventilation and air control) system. Several filter lay-outs were combined a pre-filter with electret filter (EF), electret bundle filter (EBF), or electret pleated filter (EPF), and were then examined focusing on the collection efficiency of particulate matters and pressure drop across the filter layers. The experimental results from the lab and field tests showed the best collection efficiency with EPF, which achieved 85% for $PM_{10}$ and 55% for $PM_{2.5}$. It was also found from the long term field test that the new filter lay-out could provide quite consistent dust level particularly in underground platform regardless of external condition.

  • It is a proven fact with the opening of the Seoul metro line number 1 in 1974 traffic congestion on the roads has decreased and the efficiency of people transportation in general has greatly been enhanced in the downtown and surrounding areas of Seoul. Even today construction of new subway lines are under way and many more are being planned due to the easy access to stations, short waiting and average travel times, compared with personal vehicles, contributing to the efficiency of the public transportation systems that are linking the downtown areas and also the intercity systems in moving passengers during rush hour and times of special event. Since the labour costs of the train operator in any large city based subway system accounts for a major part of the operating costs per kilometer and to ensure cost efficient operations, especially during non-peak hours, it is necessary to implement an unmanned(auto-driven) subway system. In order to implement such a system it is imperative that the on-board and wayside signalling control systems be fully automated as well. Only through proper examination of safety procedures not only by the AUGT(Automated Urban Guided Transport)system but also by ail the international standards organizations involved can safely and stability be ensured.

  • The accidents which occurred between during february of 1997 to December of 2004 at the 2nd Daegu subway construction site have been classified. The accident types of injuries include accidental falls, falling objects which consist 53.4% of all accidents. This result is higher than the same types of accidents occurring at construction sites which are 46.3%. It was found that the 3.4 times more accidents are caused from safety measures and working methods than problems caused by lack of supervision. 78.0% of the accidents occurred at stations and at the ventilation area. 31.9% of the accidents occurred when the operation was near completion($81.0%{\sim}100.0%$) which means there was pressure to complete the operation to meet the set due date. In the case of 50.0% of the accidents were caused by workers with less than two month work experience. And lumbago is 6.9%, especially lumbago didn't showed before. Maybe accident should increase if not reduce a possibility of danger. In this study a literature search has been conducted for the cause of these accident types and respective suggestions are provided.

  • The Minisoy of Information and Communication(MIC) requires telecompanys to share base stations in order to prevent the duplicated investment and environmental destruction which would be caused by the indiscreet construction of basestations for enlarging their own service area among telecompanys. This paper discusses' the problems of mobile communication services that have been generated in common-repeater at the Metropolitan subway. These problem include factors of power obstacles, communication equipment and establishment obstacles. The content of this paper is helpful in organizing the basestation sharing of IMT-2000 and the 4th generation mobile system, and provides the basics of a higher quality service for common-service communication.
