The Study on Changes of Exhaust Efficiency and Fine Particle Concentration at a Ventilation Opening by a Air Curtain Flow in a Subway Model Tunnel (지하철 모사터널에서 에어커튼을 이용한 환기구의 배기효율 및 미세입자 농도 변화 연구)

  • In this study, a new tunnel ventilation method with a high velocity air curtain flow has been investigated for improving the ventilation exhaust efficiency and removing air pollutants in subway tunnels. At upper or lower position right downstream of a main duct connected with a ventilation opening, air curtain flows were suppled into the main duct where the air flow velocity was in the range of 2~6 m/s. Exhaust efficiency was monitored for both cases with and without air curtain flow for different air velocities, locations and injection angles of the air curtain. Particulate matter concentrations (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1.0) were also checked at both the main duct and ventilation opening before and after supplying air curtain flows. Lower air velocity of the main duct flow, higher air velocity of the air curtain led to higher exhaust efficiency and the air curtain condition of 30..inclined injection toward the main flow showed the maximum exhaust efficiency. The exhaust efficiency of about 24% without the air curtain could be improved to about 34% after using the air curtain flow. PM concentration decreased at the main duct and increased at the ventilation opening after using the air curtain flow. Therefore, the suggested method to use air curtain flows in tunnels will be probably one of the promising tools to reduce air pollutants in subway tunnels.

PM10 and Associated Trace Elements in the Subway Cabin of Daejeon by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (기기 중성자방사화 분석을 이용한 대전 지하철 객차 내 PM10과 미량성분의 특성)

  • In order to assess the pollution status and distribution characteristics of PM and PM-bound species, PM10 samples were collected using mini-volume air sampler at the subway cabin in Daejeon city. Measurements of about 24 elements including toxic metals (e.g., As, Cr, Mn, V, Zn) in PM10 were made by instrumental neutron activation analysis and X-ray fluorescence. The average PM10 concentration was $59.3{\pm}14.5{\mu}g/m^3$ in the subway cabin with a range of 42.2 to $97.4{\mu}g/m^3$, while the associated elemental concentrations were varied in the range of $10^{-3}$ to $10^5ng/m^3$. It was found that the concentration of Fe ($12.5{\mu}g/m^3$) was substantially higher than any other element. The Fe concentration was apportioned by about 20% of the PM10 concentration. The results of factor analysis indicate that there are no more than six sources in the cabin (e.g., brake-nonferrous metal particle, resuspended rail dust, fuel combustion, vehicle exhaust, black carbon, Cr-related).

Estimation of PM10 and PM2.5 inhalation dose by travel time and respiratory volume in common transport microenvironments in Seoul, Korea (서울지역 교통수단별 이동시간과 호흡량을 고려한 미세먼지 흡입량 추정에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, people's interest in particulate matter (PM) has been increasing, due to its hazardous health effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the concentrations and as well as the inhaled weight of PM, correlated with person's heart rate in subway, bus, vehicle and bicycle in the major public transportation (Sadang - Jamsil and Nowon - Dongdaemun) in Seoul. The concentration of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ were measured from each of transportation means and calculated the average concentrations which were 87.2 and $57.8{\mu}g/m^3$ for subway, 62.8 and $42.5{\mu}g/m^3$ for vehicle, 61.5 and $36.8{\mu}g/m^3$ for bus and 53.0 and $29.4{\mu}g/m^3$ for bicycle in $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ respectively. Inhalation dose for $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ were estimated at 248.1 and $139.4{\mu}g$ for bicycle, 56.7 and $39.3{\mu}g$ for vehicle, 49.4 and $29.9{\mu}g$ for bus and 44.3 and $29.1{\mu}g$ for subway, respectively. Even though subway had the highest concentration, the highest inhalation dose was the bicycle. It was due to the long travel time-exposure and breathing rate which leads to maximum of $PM_{10}$ 5.6 and $PM_{2.5}$ with 4.8 times inhalation dose comparing with other modes of transportation. With regards to future studies, the amount of inhalation in each transportation means should be considered in risk assessments of PM.

  • Indoor air quality including metro subway is of recent interests in large cities. Inflow air to the inside of the train and circulating air flow through MVAC of stations contain large amount of iron based fine particles. This paper evaluated the collection of such a dust by magnetic filters as comparing to conventional particle capturing mechanisms such as inertia, direct impaction and diffusion. It was found that filtration velocity, magnetic field intensity, and fiber size were the most important parameters for magnetic filtration. Application of magnetic force obviously enhances the collection efficiency particularly in fine modes smaller than 10 mm. However, its effect was found greater in 2.5 mm than submicron particles.

  • In Part II, the temperature and smoke particle distributions of the extraction system, which yielded the best smoke removal performance among the three smoke control systems in Part I, for extraction flowrates of 0.6∼2.4 ㎥/s and two fire sizes of 200 ㎾ and 2 ㎿ were presented. The same numerical method was utilized to the same computational domain and configurations as Part I. It was shown that the extraction flowrate affects the smoke control performance significantly, and that a similar trend in improving the smoke removal performance with the increasing extraction flowrate between the two fire sizes. An extraction flowrate of 2.4 ㎥/s or higher was required for the temperature in the escape route less than $^{\circ}C$ for the given situations.

  • On the Seoul Metropolitan Subway Construction of No. 3, 4 Line, the total length is 57 Km and it is now undergoing almost 55% progress. The working method is classified into Open Cut of 70% and the rest of 30% tunnelling method in the 48 job site. Above tunnelling method is execute by American Steel Support System and the rest of 10 job site carried out by New Austria Tunnelling Method. This paper describes Blasting Standardizations works on the above Tunnelling ' Open Cut Method under big slogan, first safety, second execution. As a superintendent, I strived standardization of works with Better powder, Better Drills ' Better Pattern. Geological structure of Seoul area is composed by Jurassic Granite and also the above rockgroup are over burden by Alluviums as a Unconformity. First of all, I carried out the standard amount of powder and burden through experimental standard blasting by each powder as following Blasting works in the subway construction is surrounding shop Building, under pass the city river and also under pass highest building basement floor. I made allowable Blasting Vibration Value by West-Germany Vornorm DIN 4150, Teil 3 and should measure each blasting works as fellows all of powder is used basically Low-Gravity and Low Velocity such as Slurry, Ammonium Nitrate ' Finex I, II. for Smooth Blasting Instead of Gelatin Dynamite. Electric Detonation Cap is used basically M/S Delay Cup instead of Electric delay ' Simultaneous cap. I applied following formula V=KW3/4 $D^{-2}$ V=Particle Velocity (Cm/sec) K=Ginh Huh's Value W=Delay Charge (Kg) D=Distance(m) In the Open Cut, within 1m distance from H-pile I made to use the Concrete breaker, as following V=7W/$^{0.5}$V/$^{-1.75}$ On the Concentrate Building area, I advise to use Light class drill ø36m Bit and advance 1.1m per round blasting the three boom jumbo drill over ø45mm used only suburb of city.e Light class drill ø36m Bit and advance 1.1m per round blasting the three boom jumbo drill over ø45mm used only suburb of city.

Relaxing Effect of Evening Primrose Root on Skin Irritation Caused by Particulate Matter in Subway Tunnel (지하철 미세먼지에 의하여 유발되는 피부염증에 대한 달맞이꽃 뿌리 추출물의 완화 효과)

  • If human skin is exposed to high concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) for a long time in the outdoor environment such as subway tunnel, it will be adversely affected. In particular, fine particles can damage the skin, causing inflammation and allergic reactions. This study investigated the ability of evening primrose root (EEPR) extract to suppress the skin damages caused by the fine particles. PM was collected from a subway tunnel, where high concentrations have been reported per day over the course of a study. The EEPR had higher antioxidant activity than that of control group (62.6%). The mixture of EEPR and PM inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO), thereby alleviating skin inflammation caused by fine particle dust. EEPR had weaker cytotoxic activity than the positive control. When cells were exposed to particulate-type dust (PM10), the levels of free radicals were decreased with the increased concentrations of the extract (5, 10, 20 ㎍/mL). While at the same time more effective than positive controls. Therefore, this study proved that the Moonlight flower root extract can be used as a cosmetic material for skin by providing an effect to alleviate skin damage caused by fine particle-type dust.

Logistic Regression and GIS based Urban Ground Sink Susceptibility Assessment Considering Soil Particle Loss (토립자 유실을 고려한 로지스틱 회귀분석 및 GIS 기반 도시 지반함몰 취약성 평가)

  • This paper presents a logistic regression and GIS based urban ground sink susceptibility assessment using underground facility information considering soil particle loss. In the underground environment, the particle loss due to water flow or groundwater level change leads to the occurrence and expansion of cavities, which directly affect the ground sink. Four different contributory factors were selected according to the two underground facility domains (water pipeline area, sewer pipeline area) and subway line area. The logistic regression method was used to analyze the correlation and to derive the regression equation between the ground sink inventory and the contributory factors. Based on these results, three ground sink susceptibility maps were generated. The results obtained from this study are expected to provide basic data on the area susceptible to ground sink and needed to safety monitoring.
