  • The fundamental property of magnesia phosphate cement (MPC) for concrete repair material was investigated in this research. For mechanical properties, setting time, compressive strength and tensile/flexural bond strength were measured, and hydration products were detected by X-ray diffraction. The specimens were manufactured with dead burnt magnesia and potassium dihydrogen phosphate was admixed to activate the hydration of magnesia and a borax was used as a retarder. To observe the pore structure and ionic permeability of MPC mortar, mercury intrusion porosimetry was performed together with rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT). As a result, time to set of Fresh MPC mortar was in range of 16 to 21 min depend on the M/P ratio. Borax helped delaying setting time of MPC to 68 min. The compressive strength of MPC with M/P of 4 was sharply developed to 30 MPa within 12 hours. The compressive strength of MPC mortar was in range of 11.0 to 30.0 MPa depend on the M/P ratio at 12 hours of curing. Both tensile and flexural bond strength of MPC to old substrate (i.e. MPC; New substrate to OPC; Old substrate) were even higher than ordinary Portland cement mortar (i.e. [OPC; New substrate] to [OPC; Old substrate]) does, accounting 19 and 17 MPa, respectively. The total pore volume of MPC mortar was lower than that of OPC mortar. MPC mortar had the entrained air void rather than capillary pore. The RCPT showed that total charge passed of OPC mortar had more than that of MPC mortar, which can be explained by the pore volume and pore distribution.

  • Concrete structure is not the only material vulnerable to physical and chemical processes of deterioration associates with severe conditions. Deterioration of the concrete structure, however, occurs more progressively from the outside of the concrete exposed to severe conditions. Especially, Carbonation, chloride ion attack is more important factor of concrete durability. This study is interested in manufacturing the self-cleaning concrete surface impregnant including TEOS, lithium silicate for the repair of the exposed concrete surface and the color concrete requiring the advanced function in view of the concrete appearance. Form the results, TEOS and lithium silicate are very effective that increasing the concrete durability using self-cleaning concrete impregnant. Self-cleaning concrete impregnant specimens is satisfied with performance requirement of KS standard in adhesion test in tension but the reinforcement of concrete substrate is slight. So, the self-cleaning concrete impregnant of this study is more desirable for the improvement of durability rather than the reinforcement.

  • Significant improvements in bond strength between new and existing concrete can be achieved through the modification of the new concrete by latex modification. But, no test method has been adopted as a standard to measure the bond strength between the concrete used to repair and the substrate being repaired. The performance of old and the new concrete construction depends upon bond strength between old and the new concrete. Current adhesion strength measurement method ignores the effect of stress concentration by shape of specimens. Therefore, this research calculates stress concentration coefficient using finite element analysis and direction tensile strength test (pull-off test). The result shows that the required core depth is 2.5cm. Elastic modulus and overlay thickness do not influence in stress concentration.

  • This study investigates the effect of a protective layer on the level of carbonation resistance of concrete. For the protective layer, a PE film, bubble sheets, double layered bubble sheets and styroform were placed in a mold before placing the concrete. In addition, PE film was retrofitted by attaching on the surface of the substrate concrete with a glue. Results showed that the carbonation depths of the control concrete were 4.6 mm and 5.2 mm at one week and two weeks exposure in an accelerated carbonation chamber, whereas the concrete with all types of protective layer except PE flim did not allow the ingress of carbon dioxide during the same period.

  • Strength of reinforced concrete beams can easily be increased by the use of externally bonded CFRP composites. However, the mode of failure of CFRP strengthened beam is usually brittle due to tension-shear failure in the concrete substrate or bond failure near the CFRP-Concrete interface. In order to improve the ductility of CFRP strengthened concrete beams, critical variables need to be investigated. This experimental and analytical research focused on a series of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP composites to enhance the flexural capacity and ductility. The main variables were the amount of CFRP composites, the amount of longitudinal and shear reinforcement, and the effect of CFRP end diagonal anchorage system. Sixteen full-scale beams were investigated. A new design guideline was proposed according to the effects of the above-mentioned variables. The experimental and analytical results were found to be in good agreement.

  • The development and maintenance of a sound bond are an essential requirements of concrete repair and replacement. The bond property of a bonded overlay to its substrate concrete during the lifetime is one of the most important performance requirements which should be quantified This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of adhesive strength for overlay concrete. Three different removal methods of deteriorated concrete such as chip-patch, mill-patch and water-jet were varied in this study. According to the adhesive strength of pull- off test, case III using water-jet was measured $2\~3$ times higher than that of chip-patch or mill-patch.

  • There are the impregnating layer formation by surface protective materials or impregnants and the adhesion method by polymer, FRP sheet or steel plate in the surface protective method of concrete structure. The surface impregnation method by impregnants improves the durability of concrete structure by modifying the structure of the concrete surface and also have a merit that can be shortly applied in place without the decrease of concrete surface appearance and is easily applied again. This study is interested in manufacturing the concrete surface impregnants including lithium and potassium silicate for the repair of the exposed concrete and the color concrete requiring the advanced function in view of the concrete appearance. The durability and porosity properties was tested for the review of application. The result of this study show that the effective content of silicate ranges 5 to 20% and the separate application of the first impregnant and the second impregnant is effective for the optimum performance. The adhesion in tension is slightly increased but the reinforcement of concrete substrate is slight. So, the concrete impregnant of this study is more desirable for the improvement of durability rather than the reinforcement.

  • The substrate behavior response testing outlined in KS F 2622 evaluates the leakage cause of waterproofing membrane systems when subjected to the concrete joint load behaviors by removing the waterproofing layer after testing, relying mostly on visual observation and subjective analysis. A non-destructive leakage cause and failure type analysis method is proposed currently in this study by the means of detecting leakage paths using thermal emission imaging systems. Test specimens are placed in varying temperature conditions after the concrete joint movement testing and are scanned using the thermal emission camera to determine the location and dimension of the adhesion failure/leakage path beneath the waterproofing membranes.

  • The development and maintenance of a sound bond are an essential requirements of concrete repair and replacement. The bond property of a bonded overlay to its substrate concrete during the lifetime is one of the most important performance requirements which should be quantified. A standard or a verified bond strength measurement method is required at field for screening, selecting materials and quality control for overlay or repair materials. This study compares the nipple pipe direct tensile test, flexural adhesion test, and core pull-off test with their test results. Substantial differences in the failure stresses of three test methods were attributed to their different geometries and loading conditions. From these comparison and investigation, core pull-off test was relatively good because the coefficient of variation values were about 2%. It would be suitable for use in-situ because of its simplicity and accuracy.
