  • We have conducted two kinds of the so-called charge-compensated aliovalent element substitutions to control the photoluminescence properties of $NaAlSiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ with a special focus on the enhancement of the excitation intensity at 400 nm. The aliovalent element substitutions include cation-cation and cation-anion co-substitutions according to the general formulas $Na_{1-x}M_xAl_{1+x}Si_{1-x}O_4:Eu^{2+}$ and $Na_{1-x}M_xAlSiO_{4-x}N_x:Eu^{2+}$ (M = $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Sr^{2+}$), respectively. The increase in the relative excitation intensity at 400 nm has been achieved in both types of the co-substitutions. Thus, the present research has demonstrated the effectiveness of the charge-compensated element substitution.

  • Internal replaceable electronic module substitutions can impact EMC (ElectroMagnetic Compatibility) qualification testing and results if EMC testing is conducted at the cabinet level. The impact of component substitutions on EMC qualification results therefore should be evaluated. If a qualitative evaluation is not adequate to ensure that the modified product will not impact the cabinet level EMC qualification results, a new qualification testing should be conducted. Component level retesting should be conducted under electromagnetically equivalent conditions with the cabinet level test. This paper analyzes the propagation of conducted susceptibility test waveforms in a representative cabinet and evaluates the impact of component substitutions on cabinet level EMC qualification results according to the location of the replacement items. A guideline for a qualitative evaluation of the impact of component substitutions is described based on the propagation of the conducted susceptibility test waveforms. A module level test method is also described based on an analysis of the shielding effectiveness of the cabinet.

  • The merits of random substitutions are various applicability and security guarantee on the view point of privacy breach. However there is no research to improve the accuracy of random substitutions. In this paper we propose an algorithm for improving the accuracy of random substitutions by an advanced theoretical analysis about the standard errors. We examine that random substitutions have an unpractical accuracy level and our improved algorithm meets the theoretical results by some experiments for data sets having uniform and normal distributions. By our proposed algorithm, it is possible to upgrade the accuracy level under the same security level as the original method. The additional cost of computation for our algorithm is still acceptable and practical.

  • The complete nucleotide sequence of pKH6, a tetracycline-resistance (Tc$^{r}$) plasmid isolated from multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus SA2, has been determined and compared with that of the staphylococcal Tc$^{r}$ plasmid pTl8l. The nucleotide sequences of the two plasmids are in agreement except for 7 nucleotides. All differences are caused by base pair substitutions. Among 6 substitutions, 3 occurred in coding regions. However, only two base substitutions in coding regions resulted in changes of amino acid sequences in two different ORFs of repC and Pre proteins.

  • Wagnerite ($Mg_2PO_4F)$ was successfully synthesized in a sealed platinum tube and the complete substitutions of $Co^{++}, Ni^{++}, Cu^{++} \;and\;Zn^{++}$for Mg were made in the wagnerite structure. Wagnerite did not decompose until it reached its melting temperature. It was observed that wagnerite underwent only one inversion at $1255^{\circ}C$, prior to melting at $1340^{\circ}C$. The lattice parameters of wagnerites were linearly increased by the substitutions of $Co^{++}$ and $Zn^{++}$ and decreased by the substitutions of $Ni^{++}$ and $Cu^{++}$. The substitutions of wagnerite with $Co^{++}, Ni^{++}$ and $Cu^{++}$ resulted in purple, orange and green colors, respectively, The colors of pigments became more intense and suitable for coloring of glazes and plastics as the amount of metal ions increased.

  • Genome editing using programmable nucleases such as CRISPR/Cas9 or Cpf1 has emerged as powerful tools for gene knock-out or knock-in in various organisms. While most genetic diseases are caused by point mutations, these genome-editing approaches are inefficient in inducing single-nucleotide substitutions. Recently, Cas9-linked cytidine deaminases, named base editors (BEs), have been shown to convert cytidine to uridine efficiently, leading to targeted single-base pair substitutions in human cells and organisms. Here, we first report on the generation of Xenopus laevis mutants with targeted single-base pair substitutions using this RNA-guided programmable deaminase. Injection of base editor 3 (BE3) ribonucleoprotein targeting the tyrosinase (tyr) gene in early embryos can induce site-specific base conversions with the rates of up to 20.5%, resulting in oculocutaneous albinism phenotypes without off-target mutations. We further test this base-editing system by targeting the tp53 gene with the result that the expected single-base pair substitutions are observed at the target site. Collectively, these data establish that the programmable deaminases are efficient tools for creating targeted point mutations for human disease modeling in Xenopus.

  • Scutellariae plants contain a large number of flavonoids and in addition, many of them are with unusual A- and/or B-ring substitutions. The total number of flavonoids reported up to the middle of 1991 are 137 including 89 of flavones, flavonols and their glycosides including 3 C-glycosides$(1{\sim}89)$, 39 of flavanones, dihydroflavonols and their glycosides $(90{\sim}128)$, 8 of chalcones $(129{\sim}136)$ and one biflavonoid, 8, 8'-bibaicalein(137). More than half of the flavonoids are with either unusual 5-metboxy(2'-methoxy in case of chalcones) in A-ring and/or 2'-oxygenation(2-oxygenation in case of chalcones) in B-ring substitutions. Four flavones, four flavanones and two chalcones are with methylation at 5-OH(2'-OH in case of chalcones) and six of them also have 2'-oxygenations(2- in case of chalcones). Sixtyeight out of total 137 flavonoids have oxygenated substitution at 2'-(2- in case of chalcones) position of B-ring and in addition, 27 of them have another oxygen function at 6'-(6- in case of chalcones) and 18 of them have additional oxygen substitutions either at 3'-, 5'-,3',6'-or 3', 4', 5'-(3, 4, 5- in case of chalcones) positions. The distribution and isolation of flavonoid components of Scutellariae plants are tabulated with references.
