  • We know the several construction methods for underwater tunnel, but properly submerged concrete box type tunnel was mostly good structure stability and mostly shot length of tunnels. Submerged box type tunnel was buildup the unit segments in dry dock or ship yard by 10 to 20meters. The submerged box was composed with segments was join each together. It was installing the gate and waterproofing the coupling the front hull of a box. The complete submerged box rise up to the surface water, tow in the submerged box by tugboat, going to the destination of tunnel construction site. Beforehand dredge up soil at the bottom of a underwater, sinking the submerged box, connection together complete submerged box in underwater. The research and development ILM tunneling method is receiving careful study. Biggest weakness in submerged concrete box type tunnel was pressure waterproofing, box to box connecting, complete submerged boxes navigation and installation, after operation the submerged tunnel and management concrete box structure. It was positive evidence in submerged concrete box type tunnel. We make a practical application of the principle "the ILM tunneling method in underwater construction methods."

  • Submerged structures such as low-crested breakwaters and artificial reefs have been commonly used for coastal protection. In this study, two-dimensional laboratory experiments were conducted in a wave flume to investigate the wave transmission phenomena of permeable type submerged structures armored by Tetrapods. Different cases of the experimental conditions were included by relative crest depth, relative freeboard, relative crest width, wave steepness and so on. An empirical formula from the experimental data was proposed to predict the wave transmission coefficients over various specifications and structural designs of the permeable type submerged structure. The proposed formula successfully predicted the wave transmission coefficients. In this study, the proposed empirical formula of the wave transmission over the submerged structure was improved from the existing formula.

  • Two-dimensional laboratory experiments were conducted in a wave flume to investigate the wave transmission phenomena of rubble-mound type submerged structures armored with Tetrapods. Different experimental conditions were included by considering relative crest depth, relative freeboard, relative crest width, wave steepness, and so on. An empirical formula was proposed to predict the wave transmission coefficients over various specifications and structural designs of the partial perforated (rubble-mound) type submerged structure from the experimental results. The proposed formula successfully predicted the wave transmission coefficients. In this study, the proposed empirical formula of the wave transmission over the rubble-mound type submerged structure was improved from the existing formula.

  • Typically, a submerged breakwater is one of the good scene-friendly coastal structures used to reduce wave energy and coastal erosion. However, sometimes, a submerged breakwater also has a negative aspect in that a strong rip current occurring around an open inlet due to a difference in mean water levels on the front and rear sides of the structure leads to scouring. Such scouring has a bad effect on its stability. In order to eliminate this kind of demerit, this study investigated four new types of submerged breakwaters with drainage channels. First, hydraulic experiments were performed the typical and new structures. Then, the wave height and mean water level distributions around the structures were examined using the experimental results. Finally, it was revealed that the new type of submerged breakwater could efficiently reduce the mean water level on its rear side. In particular, in the case of new-type submerged breakwater 2, an average reduction efficiency of 71.2% for the difference between the mean water levels at the front and rear sides was shown in comparison with the typical one.

  • The reflection and transmission of submerged breakwater with trapezoidal type are computed numerically using boundary element method. The analysis method is based on the wave pressure function with the contlnuit? in the analytical region including fluid and porous structures. Wane motion within the porous structures is simulated by introducing the linear dissipation coefficient and added mass coefficient. The results indicate that transmission and reflection coefficient are determined due to the change of slope of submerged breakwater with trapezoidal type.

  • Hydroelastic deformation of pontoon type floating structure in waves is critical in structural design. Therefore, it is necessary to develop additional technology that make to dissipate the wave energy as the submerged horizontal plate. In this study, we investigate the characteristics of hydrodynamic interaction effect by the submerged plate affecting to the radiation forces on a pontoon type floating structure using numerical analysis. We have developed the numerical method based on the composite grid system that consists of moving and fixed grid to compute the radiation forces due to the heaving motion of pontoon type floating structure and submerged plate. The numerical simulations based on the finite difference method are carried out to solve the fully nonlinear free surface involving the breaking waves and compared with the experimental data to confirm the reliability of the numerical method. Then, we discuss the interaction effects on the hydrodynamic forces that could influence on the hydroelastic response of floating structure.

However, a submerged breakwater has a negative aspect in that a strong rip current occurring around an open inlet due to a difference in mean water levels at the front and rear sides of the structure leads to scouring. Such scouring has a bad effect on its stability. In order to eliminate this kind of demerit, this study investigated an artificial reef of the overflow type with openings. We also developed a program where the flows around the artificial reef of the overflow type could be analyzed numerically. An unstructured grid system was used to cover the various geometries, and the level set method was applied to treat the movement of the free surface. To verify these numerical schemes, hydraulic physical tests were performed on the submerged breakwater and double breaking type artificial reef. Then, the wave height and velocity distribution around the reef were examined using the experimental results. Comparisons between the results of hydraulic and numerical tests showed reasonable agreement.

  • A bench-scale submerged-type membrane filtration system (SMFS) was constructed to study a feasibility of membrane filtration for solid-liquid separation in water and wastewater treatment processes. In the case of applying the SMFS to a biological wastewater treatment process, so-called membrane bioreactor, aeration underneath membrane modules is usually employed in order to provide oxygen demand for microbial growth as well as to control membrane fouling. A study was investigated the effects of operation parameters by aeration intensity, feed concentration, foulant type and airlift pore size on critical flux. Critical flux tends to increase with aeration rate. Optimal aeration flow rate was found to be 10 L/min/module. Feed concentration and foulant type has a significant effect on membrane fouling and filtration performance. But downward position and pore size of airlift has no a significant effects on membrane fouling and filtration performance.
