  • The study of velocity fields and vortex generation around the submerged breakwater can be utilized as materials related to understanding of wave dissipation mechanism, sediment transport, and stability of structure. In the present study, two-dimensional numerical wave flume, based on the VOF method to trace free surface, developed by Kim et al.(2001, 2002) was used to numerically simulate velocity fields and vortex generation around the impermeable submerged breakwater installed at the uniform bottom. Especially, the characteristics of vortex generation due to the geometry of the structure and incident wave conditions are examined through the analysis of averaged-velocity fields around the impermeable submerged breakwater. From the numerical simulations, it is confirmed that a counter clockwise vortex is formed in front of the structure and a clockwise vortex develops behind the structure. Also, incident wave height and period have an sensitive effect on the strength of vortex.

  • A submerged breakwater is a coastal structure built under water with excellent landscape. The depth of the crest of the breakwater should be maintained at more than a certain level in order for the submerged breakwater to control waves properly. This means that the effect of blocking waves deceases sharply at high tide in coastal areas with large tidal differences. In this study, we proposed a Tide-Adapting Submerged Breakwater (TA-SB) to overcome this problem, and then we conducted hydraulic model experiments to evaluate the performance of the TA-SB for controlling waves. The experimental results showed that the tapered wings attached to the crest of the TA-SB helped induce forced breaking waves. In particular, they were very effective in blocking waves and attenuating wave energy at high tide. In addition, the wave control performance of the proposed TA-SB was far superior to the Tide-Adapting Low-Crested Structure (TA-LCS) of the previous study.

  • In summer and early autumn, eutrophication occurs occasionally in many reservoirs. Lakeside macrophyte which is one of internal pollutants effects on water quality when it is submerged during water surface is rising after rainy season. This study include examination of pollutant load, species of plant, community structure and productivity of macrophyte in unit area at lakeside. The result of this research will be used as a guideline of water quality management on reservoir through assessing water quality effect of submerged plant. The areal distribution, composition of species and submerged area of macrophyte changes according to rainfall pattern every year, so it is difficult to calculate nutrient load annually from submerged macrophyte. In this study, the nutrient load from submerged macrophyte assess from Daecheong and Juam reservoir in 2001. TN and TP load of submerged macrophyte shows 0.043% and 0.069%, respectively, of annual discharge load on Daecheong watershed. At lake Juam, TN and TP shows 0.64% and 1.28% load, respectively. The reason that nutrient load of lake Juam is greater than that of lake Daecheong is that macrophyte distribution area of lake Juam is 5 times greater than that of lake Daecheong. Total nutrient load of lake Daecheong is 3 times greater than that of lake Juam.

  • Pontoon type very large floating structure has been considered and actively studied as one of the most important ocean space utilization. The hydroelastic displacement of the pontoon type floating structure in waves is the largest at its weather side. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics and effects of the submerged horizontal plate which is developed to reduce the wave exciting forces acting on the pontoon type floating structure using numerical analysis. The numerical method based on the finite difference method has been adopted and compared with the experimental data to confirm the reliability of it. We have performed the numerical computation of wave exciting forces acting on the pontoon type floating structure with/without submerged plate and discuss the results of simulation.

  • Typically, a submerged breakwater is one of the good scene-friendly coastal structures used to reduce wave energy and coastal erosion. However, sometimes, a submerged breakwater also has a negative aspect in that a strong rip current occurring around an open inlet due to a difference in mean water levels on the front and rear sides of the structure leads to scouring. Such scouring has a bad effect on its stability. In order to eliminate this kind of demerit, this study investigated four new types of submerged breakwaters with drainage channels. First, hydraulic experiments were performed the typical and new structures. Then, the wave height and mean water level distributions around the structures were examined using the experimental results. Finally, it was revealed that the new type of submerged breakwater could efficiently reduce the mean water level on its rear side. In particular, in the case of new-type submerged breakwater 2, an average reduction efficiency of 71.2% for the difference between the mean water levels at the front and rear sides was shown in comparison with the typical one.

  • In this study, we focus on the submerged plate built into the Very Large Floating Structure with the partial openings of 5m long, which enables the reverse flow of incident wave to generate the wave breaking. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of wave exciting forces acting on the submerged plate. Firstly, we have carried out the extensive experiments to understand the characteristics of the wave exciting forces. Then we have performed the numerical simulations by applying the Marker and Cell method and compared with the experimental results. We discuss the validity of MAC method and the effects of the submerged plate on the motion of VLFS.

  • To examine the effect of shape and crest width variation of a permeable submerged breakwater on the wave energy dissipation, Two-Dimensional numerical model with Large Eddy Simulation, which is able to simulate directly WAve Structure Seabed interaction (hereafter, LES-WASS-2D) has been newly developed. A good agreement has been obtained by the comparison between the existing experimental results and LES-WASS-2D model's results for the permeable submerged breakwater. Moreover, based on the LES-WASS-2D model, the wave energy dissipation due to a permeable submerged breakwater are discussed for regular and irregular waves with relation to its crest width and shape.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the effects of shape and plane arrangement of submerged breakwaters on 3-D wave breaking characteristics over them. First, the numerical model, which is able to consider the flow through a porous medium with inertial, laminar, and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve Structure Seabed/Sandy beach interaction, and can determine the eddy viscosity with a LES turbulent model in a 3-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-3D), has been validated by a comparison with Goda's equation for breaking wave heights. And then, using the numerical results, the wave breaking points over the crest of submerged breakwaters have been examined in relation to the shape and plane arrangement of submerged breakwaters. Moreover, the wave height distribution and upper flow around submerged breakwaters have been also discussed, as well as the distribution of the wave breaking points over the beach.

  • It is generally known that submerged breakwaters can reduce the incoming wave energy without disturbing the beach scenery. However, a submerged breakwater is also able to cause a setup of the sea level in the protected area which is also called as water piling-up. Since the piling-up can result in longshore currents, sediment transports, and unexpected beach erosion, understanding about the piling-up process is required prior to designing the nearshore structures. In this study, the water piling-up behind a submerged breakwater is assessed in the time of storm events. For the study area, Anmok beach in Gyeonso-dong, Gangwon-do is selected. 1-year, 5-year, 10-year, and 50-year return-values were derived from Peaks-Over-Threshold(POT) method and those are applied as offshore boundary conditions for the numerical simulation. The numerical results of the piling-up were assessed with regard to the wave steepness and the height of the submerged breakwater. With increase of both significant wave height and the height of the submerged breakwater, the piling-up parameter is also increased which can lead to erosion of dry beach behind the structure.
