  • This paper describes results of an experimental study to examine the effect of a submerged horizontal breakwater to sea water exchange. Flow measurements were taken by using a PIV(Particie Image Velocimetry) system, and mean currents and wave ellipses extracted through the harmonic analysis are presented. As results, the rates of circulating flow were closely connected with the volume flux of incident waves and the counter-rotating vortex pair was observed at the onshore side of a plate. The dye study showed that incoming sea water and polluted water body mixed up significantly due to turbulent motions induced by a jet-like flow.

  • The seaward reverse wave, occurring on the submerged dual porous horizontal plate, can contribute to the reduction of the transmitted wave as it reflects the propagating wave. However, the collision between the propagating and seaward reverse waves increases the water level and acts as a weight on the horizontal plate. This study investigated the characteristics of the wave pressure created by the seaward reverse wave through the analysis of experimental data. The analysis confirmed the following results: 1) the time series of the wave pressure showed reverse phase phenomena due to the collision, and the wave pressures acted simultaneously on both upper and lower surfaces of the horizontal plate; 2) the horizontal plate became repeatedly compressed and tensile before and after the occurrence of the seaward reverse wave; and 3) the seaward reverse wave created the total wave pressure to the maximum towards the direction of gravity, primarily on the upper plate. It was also confirmed that the wave distributions showed a similar trend to the wave steepness. Such outcome of the analysis will provide basic information to the structural analysis of the horizontal plate as a wave dissipater of the steel-type breakwater (STB).

  • Wave forces on fixed two-dimensional objects submerged in water of finite depth were analysed by Boundary Element Method using linear elements. It is assumed that the wave forces may be described by linear theory and that incident wave direction is normal to the objects of infinite length. In this paper, wave forces on a bottom-seated half cross section pipeline, a circular pipeline, a submerged pipeline and submerged breakwater of arbitrary shape were studied. The accuracy of the computational scheme is investigated by comparing the numerical results with the existing laboratory results and analytical solutions of other researchers.

  • In this study, reflection of water waves over a train of rectangular submerged breakwaters is experimentally investigated. Measured reflection coefficients of regular waves are compared with predicted coefficients obtained from the eigenfunction expansion method. Although measured coefficients are slightly smaller than predicted ones, the overall agreement is very good.

  • In the majority of previous studies on deformation of seabed structures using DEM, elements of structures have been assumed that it is composed with uniform materials or received fixed wave force, despite that actual submerged structures are composed with various size materials and influenced by complicated fluid field. The goal of this study is to develop a new model for analysis of seabed structure deformation using discontinuous structures composed with various size materials. As the first phase, a model using DEM and VOF, which can compute the deformation of submerged structures composed with various size materials, such as rubble mound structures, is proposed. A model test is carried out and then the validity of the model is discussed.
