Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate how mental health status affects oral health in the elderly. Methods: The subjects of the study provided the data for the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 to 2015. Four-hundred and twenty-one subjects were selected for the study. All data were analyzed by complex sampling frequency, chi-square test, and composite multiple regression analysis using SPSS 21.0 version. In addition, a significance level of 0.05 was considered. Results: The general factors affecting cases of periodontal disease were general characteristics, mental health status, oral health status, elderly males, household income, education level, daily brushing frequency, speaking, and stress. The effect of periodontal disease was 1.64 times higher in the male group than in the female group (p<0.001). In the household income level, the 'low' group had 1.91 times more periodontal disease, while the 'mid low' group had 1.64 times more periodontal disease than the 'high' group (p<0.05). Periodontal disease was found to be lower in the group that recognized subjective oral health status as 'good' (p<0.05). The study subjects had low levels of periodontal disease when there was no speaking difficulty (p<0.05). Conclusions: Therefore, in order to improve oral health of the elderly, it is necessary to understand the mental health condition of the elderly and prepare proper oral health education programs accordingly. Institutional devices for various oral health projects should be prepared, as well.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify relationships of periodontal disease and health related quality of life (HRQoL) in pregnant women. Methods: The participants in this study were 129 pregnant women. Data were collected using questionnaires of characteristics of the participants and subjective perception of periodontal disease and a dentist's assessment of periodontal disease. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The physical QoL showed significant negative correlation with subjective perception of periodontal disease (r=-.21, p=.013). Mental QoL had significant negative correlations with subjective perception of periodontal disease (r=-.32, p<.001) and objective periodontal disease (r=-.34, p<.001). Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that pregnant women who had a history of abortion and had higher subjective perception of periodontal disease tended to report lower levels of physical QoL. Pregnant women whose age are between 30-34 years and higher subjective perception and objective periodontal disease tended to report lower mental QoL. Conclusion: To improve HRQoL of pregnant women, nurses should pay attention on the status of periodontal disease. Careful assessment of oral healthy behaviors and proper intervention for oral health of pregnant women are needed to enhance HRQoL of pregnant women.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare health promoting behavior between working and non-working mothers with infants and toddlers, and to investigate factors affecting the mothers'health promoting behavior. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted through conveniently sampled 403 women who visited the child health clinics at two public health centers. The questionnaire included the Health Promoting Life Style Profile (HPLP) and a visual analogue scale for subjective health status. ANCOVA, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression were conducted using SPSS ver. 21. Results: Working mothers' average HPLP score ($2.30{\pm}0.37$) was higher than non-working mother's ($2.15{\pm}0.37$). The score of the physical activity subscale was lowest among the subscales and there was a difference between the two groups. Subjective mental health status was the only predictor of working mothers'health promoting behavior, and it explained 23.2% of variance in health promoting behavior. Subjective mental health status, education, and age were the predictors of non-working mothers' health promoting behavior and they explained 27.2% of variance in health promoting behavior. Conclusion: According to the findings, both working and non-working mothers' health promoting behaviors were low. To promote mothers' health, it is necessary to develop diverse community health promotion programs to support mothers.
This study was conducted to examine factors influencing mental health of middle-aged adults(N=203) in relation to sociodemographic variables, health behaviors, and social support. The survey with questionnaire was carried out for the subjects of the residents in two communities of a local city located in Gangwon-do, Korea from September 3 to 15, 2003. Data analysis procedure included stepwise multiple regression using mental health as the dependent variable, and sociodemographic variables, health behaviors, and social support as independent variables. There were significant differences in the mental health by birth place(t=-1.67, p<0.10), religion (t=2.27, p<0.05) and subjective economic status(F=2.29, p<0.10). Mental health showed significant positive correlations with both health behavior (r=0.462, p<0.001) and social support (r=0.142, p<0.05). Stepwise multiple regression analysis for mental health revealed that the most powerful predictor was health behavior(β=0.453, p<0.001). Health behavior and religion explained 24% of the variance. The results suggest the necessity of a intervention that considers the health behaviors should be included in middle-aged adults so as to promote mental health.
This study was conducted to identify factors influencing mental health of one-person household members. Using data from the 2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 768 subjects were included. The SPSS/Win 21.0 program was used, and the complex sample design data were analyzed by Rao-Scott 𝑥2 test and multiple logistic regression analysis. Of the subjects, 29.9% perceived high stress, 16.2% felt depressed, and 8.2% had suicidal ideation. The influencing factors of stress perception were age and subjective health status(p<.001). Factors influencing depressed mood were household income, subjective health status, and perceived stress(p<.001). Factors influencing suicidal ideation were age, household income, subjective health status, perceived stress, and depressed mood(p<.001). The results of this study can be used as basic data for improving mental health services of one-person household members.
This study conducted an analysis of the correlations among menopausal symptoms of middle-aged women, their exercise performance and subjective health conditions on those 417 middle-aged women aged 40-59 years, residing in Seoul and the Kyongki Province area, from December 6, 2000 through Jun. 20, 2001, using the SPSS 10.00 program. Resultant findings were revealed, as follows: 1. A difference was represented in general characteristics between menopausal symptoms of middled-aged women and variables such as satisfaction with life, sexual life, diseases, the presence or absence of surgical operations; a difference between exercise performance and variables such as age, the presence or absence of vocations, weight control, satisfaction with life, and sleep; and also a difference between subjective health conditions and variables such as weight control, satisfaction with life, diseases, and the presence or absence of surgical operations. 2. Furthermore, a difference was revealed between the levels of menopausal symptoms by exercise performance and variables such as mental and physical symptoms and psychological symptoms. 3. The group of good exercise performance showed higher subjective health conditions as to subjective health conditions by the levels of exercise performance. 4. The better their subjective health conditions, the lower their menopausal symptoms as to menopausal symptoms by subjective health conditions. 5. A negative relationship was disclosed between menopausal symptoms and exercise performance; a positive relationship between exercise performance and subjective health conditions; and a negative relationship between subjective health conditions and menopausal symptoms.
Objectives: This study aimed to identify factors related to oral health and depression in Korean adults and contribute to the development of a mental health program to improve depression through oral health management. Methods: Data was obtained from the 2021 Korean Community Health Survey. The chi-square test was used to determine the differences in depression experience relative to general participant characteristics and their oral health. To determine the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval, multiple logistic regression analysis was used. All statistical analyses were performed using the SAS software (version 9.4). Results: The results suggest that depression may be influenced by gender, age, household generation, drinking habits, subjective health level, moderate to high exercise, breakfast, high blood pressure, diabetes, subjective oral health level, chewing discomfort, and tooth brushing. An increasing level of depression was associated with decreasing subjective oral health level (1.34 times), uncomfortable chewing (3.08 times), and frequency of toothbrushing after lunch or before going to bed (1.23 times and 1.58 times, respectively). Conclusions: Our study confirmed a close relationship between oral health and mental health. In developing health programs for improving depression, appropriate oral health care should be considered.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine whether the level of participation in physical activity affects the mental health of adolescents, that is, their subjective well-being. In addition, we would like to see if adolescents can improve their satisfaction with life away from the negative emotions they are currently feeling through physical activities such as hand-help and consolation activities and check if self-esteem has mediating effects in this process. Design: Survey. Methods: The survey was conducted by the surveyor, with a total of 9,041. Results: First, it shows that the higher frequency of adolescents' physical activity leads to higher self-esteem and subjective well-being. Second, it shows that the higher the self-esteem leads to higher subjective well-being felt by adolescents. Third, the level of youth physical activity itself contributes to subjective well-being while also affecting self-esteem, and the self-esteem also affects the subjective well-being that adolescents perceive. Conclusion: It will be necessary to provide programs to enhance subjective well-being for students with poor school life adaptation and satisfaction with life, as well as continuous attention such as organization and counseling of programs in schools to enhance self-esteem. In addition, it is considered that by encouraging and guiding teenagers with low satisfaction with life and low self-esteem to physical activities such as volunteer activities and leisure activities that suit their aptitude, and the adolescents will get away from the negative emotions they are currently feeling and increase their satisfaction with adaptation to school life and life.
