  • Purpose : This study aims to examine hospital employees' subjective symptoms of VDT syndrome (Video display terminal syndrome) and figure out their effects on health conditions and correlations. Materials and Methods : This study used a structured self-administering questionnaire and gained data from 125 subjects. The questionnaire consists of total 62 questions, and they went through real number, percentage, ${\chi}^2$-terst, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and logistic regression analysis. Results : Regarding the difference in the types of subjective symptoms of VDT syndrome by jobs, there was statistically significant difference in ophthalmic symptoms, systemic symptoms, and musculoskeletal symptoms. About the correlation between the subjective symptom points of VDT syndrome by the types of symptoms, there was statistically significant correlation all in skin trouble, backache, upper limb muscle pain, lower limb muscle pain, fatigue in the head and eyes, and depression or anxiety disorders. There was significant correlation between the subjective symptom points of VDT syndrome and subjective health conditions. Conclusion : Hospital employees' subjective health conditions had significant correlation with subjective symptom points of VDT syndrome. This result shows that as radiologists' and also other hospital employees' working conditions change into VDT environment, VDT syndrome gradually appears more and more. This implies that it is needed to designate not only radiologists but also all the other hospital employees as jobs exposed to the working environment of VDT syndrome and provide preventive measures, education, and publicity for it afterwards.

  • Background: Pain control is a crucial aspect of pediatric dentistry for patient management. Thermo-mechanical devices (BuzzyTM Pain Care Labs, USA) work on the concept of vibration and cooling and have shown promising results in pain control during local anesthesia in pediatric dentistry. On the other hand, audio distraction has also been used for pain management. The amount of pain endured is determined by the patient's perception and attentiveness. Thus, if audio function is added to the thermomechanical device it might increase its efficiency. Hence, the present study aimed to compare pain on injection using a thermo-mechanical device with and without audio during inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) injection in children aged 5-10 years old. Methods: Twenty-eight children aged between 5 and 10 indicated for IANB were included in this randomized study. Children who were undergoing the dental procedure were divided into 2 groups, with 14 children in each group. The study group was the thermo-mechanical device with audio distraction; the control group was the thermo-mechanical device without audio distraction. IANB was administered. Subjective pain evaluation was performed using the Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale (WBFPR) and objective pain evaluation was done using the Faces, Leg, Activity, Consolability, Cry (FLACC) scale. Results: The outcome depicted a significant reduction in pain on injection for both objective and subjective evaluations in the thermo-mechanical device with an audio distraction group. Conclusions: Less pain on injection was observed, when a thermo-mechanical device was used with audio distraction for IANB procedures.

  • Frozen shoulder is clinically characterized by pain and reduced ROM. The therapeutic goal of frozen shoulder can be reducing pain and increasing ROM in shoulder joint, resulting in improvement of joint movement. Therefore, this study was conducted to know the effect of mobilization in parallel with conservative physical therapy(H/P, TENS, U/S) in patients with frozen shoulder on subjective pain scale and ROM. 26 patients diagnosed with frozen shoulder were included for study. Among them, 13 patients(experiment group) were managed by mobilization as well as conservative physical therapy, another 13 patients(control group) were only treated by conservative physical therapy alone. All the patients were treated three times a week for 4 weeks, and after each treatment subjective pain scale and ROM were measured. In experimental group, pain has decreased and ROM has increased in abduction, external rotation and internal rotation. In control group, pain has also decreased but ROM has not changed in abduction, external rotation and internal rotation. There were no significant difference in subjective pain scale between two groups but some difference in ROM (external rotation, internal rotation). According to the results, we concluded that both conservative physical therapy and joint mobilization technique are more effective for increasing ROM especially external rotation, internal rotation than conservative physical therapy alone.

  • Two cases of in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy were reported in this clinical study. After the study, the results were as follows: 1. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy was occurred with both insulin dependent diabetic mellitus(IDDM) patients, long and short durations, and non insulin dependent diabetic mellitus(NIDDM) patients. However, the degree of subjective symptom was stronger with the former patients. 2. Non insulin dependent diabetic mellitus(NIDDM) patients on dosage of Gamisamultang (加味四物湯) showed remarkable decrease of duration of illness and pain; however, plantar causalgic pain was unremarkable. In contrast to non insulin dependent diabetic mellitus(NIDDM) patients, long duration of insulin dependent diabetic mellitus(IDDM) patients showed remarkable decrease of plantar causalgic pain: however, pain decreased unremarkably. 3. The general treatment of diabetic patients was the control of blood glucose level; however it seemed to be no effect on the degree of subjective symptom. When patients were treated with acupuncture, followed by electropucture, on Palpung(八風), Taechung(太衝:Liv3), Chok-imup(足臨泣: Gb41), Hyonjong(縣鐘 : G39), Sungsan(承山 : B57), Chok-Samni(足三里 : S36), and Yangnungchon(陽陵泉 : G34) showed a great effect on decreasing the pain.
