  • The ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) were prepared from an open 2-roll mill following the conventional rubber blend method, and then cure characteristics, mechanical properties and ozone resistance were subsequently examined. With incorporation of SBR the torque value of the EPDM and SBR blends showed a gradual increase in the cure curve. The maximum torque value was obtained with lowest level at 25wt% of SBR and it was increased linearly with more than 25wt%. As the SBR loading increased scorch time and optimum cure time decreased. Hardness represented a maximum at 50wt% of SBR. However upper and lower than that value it decreased. It was found that the unfavorable characteristics of ozone resistance of pure SBR was significantly improved through the blending of SBR with EPDM.

  • Herein, a facile approach for the development of effective and low-cost carbon precursors from acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) rubber is reported. ABS rubber with a negligible char yield can be converted into an excellent carbon precursor with approximately 54% char yield under a nitrogen atmosphere at 800℃ by simple iodine doping and subsequent heating at 110℃ under an inert atmosphere. The enhanced char yield is attributed to the improved intermolecular interactions between the ABS chains caused by the formation of covalent bonds between the butadiene segments, along with the newly developed charge-charge interactions and other indiscriminate radical-radical couplings. The charges and radicals involved in these interactions are also generated by iodine doping. We believe that this study will be useful for the development of low-cost carbon precursors.

  • 1,3-butadiene is classified as suspected human carcinogen, group A2(American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, ACGIH). In Korea, 1,3-butadiene has been used as a raw material; monomer, homopolymer, polybutadiene latex, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) and styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR), in the petrochemistry and precision chemistry industry. As petrochemistry industry in Korea has been developed, the potential exposure possibility of 1,3-butadiene to workers can be increased. Therefore the purpose of this study is to evaluate airborne 1,3-butadiene concentration and workers' exposure levels in the workplace using 1,3-butadiene. Air samples were collected with 4-tert-butyl catechol(TBC) charcoal tube(100 mg/50 mg) and were analyzed by gas chromatograph/flame ionization detector(GC/FID) according to the Choi's method(2002). Geometric mean (GM) and arithmetic mean (AM) of total 59 workers' exposure concentrations to airborne 1.3-butadiene were 0.042 ppm and 1.51 ppm, respectively. Although most samples were lower than 1ppm, 2 samples(21.5ppm and 33.1ppm as 8hr-TWA) were exceeded the Korean standard(2ppm) over 10 times at the repair process in synthetic rubber and resin manufacture industry. 14 samples(41%) of total 34 short-term air samples were exceeded the Korean standard(10ppm as STEL) of Ministry Labor. 1,3-butadiene concentration(GM) in the synthetic rubber and resin manufacture industry(7.87ppm) was significantly higher than that in the monomer manufacure industry (0.35ppm)(p<0.05). Also in the sampling and repair process, each GM(range) was 1.39ppm(N.D.-469.6ppm) and 7.85ppm(N.D.-410.2ppm). In conclusion, it depends on the industry and process, 1,3-butadiene can be exposed to workers as high concentration for short-term.

  • Cure characteristics of carbon black-filled rubber compounds with different rubber composition were studied using a rheometer. The carbon black-filled rubber compounds with single, binary, and ternary rubber compositions of natural rubber (NR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and butadiene rubber (BR) were used. Delta-torques of the NR/BR- and SBR/BR-based compounds with a high BR content were higher than those of the single rubber-based compounds. For ternary rubber-based compounds, the delta-torques of the compounds were lower when the difference in the rubber content ratios was small than when it was big. Scorch and optimum cure times of the rubber compounds became shorter by increasing the content of NR in the compounds while those became longer by increasing the SBR content. Cure rates of the rubber compounds increased with a decrease of the SBR content in the rubber compounds. Reversion ratios decreased with an increase of the SBR content in the rubber compounds.

  • Recently, the disposal of used vehicle tires is a big social problem because the amount of used vehicle tires has been increased with development of' automobile industry. Many researches have been made on the recycling of used vehicle tires in the various fields of industry as well as construction industry. When the crumb rubber made of vehicle tires is mixed in cement concrete and mortar, it is indicated that the adhesive strength of interface between the crumb rubber and cement hydrates is very low. The purpose of this study is to improve the fundamental properties by increasing of the adhesion strength of styrene-butadiene rubber(SF3R) latex coated crumb rubber in ; cement mortar. SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber is also tested as the same method. From the test results, the cement mortar using SBR latex coated crumb rubber have a good fundamental properties compared with that using uncoated crumb rubber. The mechanical properties of SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber with polymer-cement ratios of 10% are also improved.

  • During recent years researchers performed large effort to increase the service life and asphalt stability of the roads against traffic loads and weather conditions. Investigations carried out in various aspects such as changes in gradation, addition of various additives, changes in asphalt textures and etc. The objective of this research is to evaluate the advantages of adding recycled glass powder (RGP), Crumb Rubber (CR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) to base bitumen with grade of 60/70 for modification of asphalt concrete. Initial studies conducted for determining the physical properties of bitumen and modifiers. A series of asphalt concrete samples made using various combinations of RGP, CR, SBR, SBS and base bitumen. All samples tested using Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS), Indirect Tensile Strength Modulus (ITSM) and Marshall Stability Tests. The new data compared with the results of control samples. The results showed that replacing RGP with known polymers improved ITS and ITSM results considerably. Also the Marshall Stability of modified mixtures using RGP is more than what is found for the base blend. Ultimately, the new RGP modifier had a huge impact on pavement performance and results in high flexibility which can be concluded as high service life for the new modified asphalt concrete.

  • The characteristics of all polymer composites containing carbon materials are determined by four factors: component properties, composition, structure and interfacial interactions. The most important filler characteristics are particle size, size distribution, specific surface area and particle shape. As a consequence, in this paper we discuss the aspects of the mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of composites with different fillers of carbon black, carbon nanotube (CNT), graphene and graphite and focus on the relationship between factors and properties, as mentioned above. Accordingly, we fabricate rubber composites that contain various carbon materials in carbon black-based and silica based-SBR matrixes with dual phase fillers and use scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, a rhometer, an Instron tensile machine, and a thermal conductivity analyzer to evaluate composites' mechanical, fatigue, thermal, and electronic properties. In mechanical properties, hardness and 300%-modulus of graphene-composite are sharply increased in all cases due to the larger specific surface. Also, it has been found that the thermal conductivity of the CNT-composite is higher than that of any of the other composites and that the composite with graphene has the best electrical properties.

  • Influence of low molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber (liquid SBR) on properties of a silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds was studied. Viscosity of the silica-filled SBR compound decreased by adding the liquid SBR. The crosslink density decreased and the cure rate became slower as the liquid SBR content increased. The modulus and tensile strength decreased while the elongation at break became longer by increasing the liquid SBR content. The abrasion losses were nearly the same irrespective of the liquid SBR content. This might be due to the improvement of silica dispersion by adding the liquid SBR. Considering the experimental results, it was believed that addition of small amount of the liquid SBR (less than 5 phr) was desirable to improve properties of silica-filled SBR compounds.
