  • Reinforced concrete corbel beams (span to depth ratio of a corbel is less than one) are designed with primary reinforcement bars to account for bending moment and with the secondary reinforcement placed parallel to the primary reinforcement (shear stirrups) to resist shear force. It is interesting to note that most of the available analytical procedures employ empirical formulas for the analysis of reinforced concrete corbels. In the present work, a generalized and a simple strut and tie models were employed for the analysis of reinforced corbel beams. The models were benchmarked against experimental results available in the literature. It was shown here that increase of shear stirrups increases the load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete corbel beams. The effect of horizontal load on the load carrying capacity of the corbel beams has also been examined in the present paper. It is observed from the strut and tie models that the resistance of the corbel beam subjected to combined horizontal and vertical load did not change with increase in shear stirrups if the failure of the corbel is limited by concrete crushing. In other words, the load carrying capacity was independent of the horizontal load when failure of the beam occurred due to concrete crushing.

  • In this paper, the strengthening analysis by strut-tie model for strengthened shear failed RC deep beam by the so-called the Steel Clamping Unit (SCU), which is a strengthening equipment, is carried out. The analysis considers the span-to-depth ratio, the existence of prestressing and stirrup, the shape of shear crack, and the strengthening position of the SCU. Based on analytical results, optimized strengthening analysis and design are carried out by investigating the behavior of the strengthened deep beams. The comparison between analytical results and experimental results shows that optimum strengthening effect by the SCU can be obtained when compressive strut zone created by SCU is away from major shear crack of the beam as far as possible.

  • In order to consider the modified seismic response of framed structures in the presence of masonry infills, proper models have to be formulated. Because of the complexity of the problem, a careful definition of an equivalent diagonal pin-jointed strut, able to represent the horizontal force-interstorey displacement cyclic law of the actual infill, may be a solution. In this connection the present paper, continuing a previous work in which a generalised criterion for the determination of the ideal cross-section of the equivalent strut was formulated, analizes some models known in literature for the prediction of the lateral cyclic behaviour discussing their field of validity. As a support of the discussion, the results of an experimental investigation involving single story-single bay infilled reinforced concrete. Frames under vertical and lateral loads with different kind of infill (actually not yet so much investigated) are presented. Finally, an improvement of a model known in the literature is proposed, taking the results of the experimental tests before mentioned into account.

  • This paper focuses on a development of strut-and-tie model (STM) to predict the capacity of an improved longitudinal joint for decked bulb-tee bridge systems. Nine reinforced concrete beam/slab specimens anchored by spliced headed bars with different details were tested. Test results were evaluated and compared with an anticipation of the validated STM. The proposed STM provides a lower bound of the ultimate capacity of the joint zone. It shows that the lap length of headed bars has a significant effect on structural behaviors of the improved joint. To develop a full strength joint, the range of the lap length can be determined by the strength and compatibility requirement. Design recommendations to spliced headed bars, concrete strength, as well as lacer bars in the joint zone are proposed for developing a full strength joint.

  • In this study, ultimate strengths of 51 continuous reinforced concrete deep beams were evaluated by the ACI 318M-08's strut-tie model approach implemented with the presented indeterminate strut-tie model and load distribution ratio of the companion paper. The ultimate strengths of the continuous deep beams were also estimated by the shear equations derived based on experimental results, conventional design codes based on experimental and theoretical shear strength models, and current strut-tie model design codes. The validity of the presented strut-tie model and load distribution ratio was examined through the comparison of the strength analysis results classified according to the primary design variables of shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and concrete compressive strength. The present study results of ultimate strengths obtained using the indeterminate strut-tie model and load distribution ratio of the continuous deep beams agree fairly well with those obtained using other approaches. In addition, the present approach reflected the effect of the primary design variables on the ultimate strengths of the continuous deep beams consistently and accurately. Therefore, the present study will help structural designers to conduct rational and practical strut-tie model designs of continuous deep beams.

  • In this study, 3-D FEM analysis are carried out to investigate the effect of the corners and re-entrant corners which can't be analysed by 2-D analysis. The excavation shape is re-entrant type conditions. The wall displacement, earth pressure and effectiveness of the corner struts are investigated in the re-entrant case, The 3D analysis are peformed to evaluate the effect of various factors, such as re-entrant corner size, excavation depth, and presence of struts. The wall displacement and earth pressures are influenced the size of re-entrant corner. Therefore, the effect of re-entrant corner should be considered in the evaluation of the earth pressure and displacement of the corners. Finally, strut-support systems are not effective at the re-entrant corner.

  • This paper evaluates the effects of haunches and the characteristic differences of haunch design regulations through design of pier and box structures with/without haunches. The design of the pier and box structures was conducted by using the linear elastic plane stress finite element analysis, the DIN 1045 and ACI 318-99 codes, the suggested experimental design equations, and the strut-tie model approach. To prove the validity of design results obtained by the strut-tie model approach, the ultimate strength of two haunched reinforced concrete beams tested to failure was evaluated by using the approach. According to the comparison and evaluation of the design results, it is concluded that the design results of haunched reinforced concrete structures by using conventional and design codes need to be complemented with those by using the strut-tie model approach that reflected the effects of haunches in design comparatively well through the actions of arch and direct transfer of applied loads.

  • In this study, a rocking behavior experiment using a guide plate and a guide channel to prevent lateral deformation of a steel damper was planned. For this purpose, strut I-type specimen I-1 and strut S-type specimen S-1 were prepared. The experimental results were compared with the existing experimental results of SI-260 and SS-260 under the same conditions without the details of lateral deformation prevention in order to evaluate the effect of preventing lateral deformation. The damper with lateral deformation prevention detail was evaluated to have superior strength capacity, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation capacity than the damper without it. Therefore, the lateral deformation prevention detail was evaluated to have a good effect in improving the design capability of the steel damper.

  • The influence of the central axis and the strut supporting the helical ribbon was investigated in a helical ribbon impeller mixing tank through experiments and visualization. As a result, the strut, which is in the transverse direction, turned out to have a significant adverse effect on the mixing performance such as the occurrence of incomplete mixing region from the change of the liquid level. In contrast, the central axis, which in the longitudinal direction, did not show much adverse effects.

  • This study carried out a shear experiment on concrete deep beam reinforced AFRP to investigate the shear strength of deep beam. The test was conducted on 8 specimens, and the variables were shear span ratio, reinforcement ratio, effective depth, and rebar type. We compared shear strength using ACI 318-08 STM with proposed equations that considered arching action according to shear span ratio. As a result, it was found that shear strength of deep beam reinforced AFRP rebar presented higher shear strength than steel rebar. ACI STM's predictions are more accurate than other predicting equations, and thus this research proposed model versus effective compressive strength of the concrete strut that considered strut size effect based on test results. The predictions obtained using the proposed model are in better agreement than previous equations and codes.
