  • There is currently a focus on usability of interactive computer software. Previous research in software ergonomics has indicated the importance of evaluating the usability of software user interfaces. Software developers, interface designers or human foctors engineers often confront the task of comparative evaluation among systems, versions or interface designs. This study presents a structured model for comparative evaluation of user interface designs using usability criteria and measures. The proposed model consists of twomain phases : the prescreening phase ad the evaluation phase. The first phase involves expert judgment-based approach with qualitative criteria. The prescreening phase uses absolute measurement analytic hierarchy process to filter possible altermative interfaces to a reasonable subset. The second phase involves user-based approach such as usability testing, with quantitative criteria. The objective of the evaluation phase is to evaluate a subset of altermatives using objective measures. A set of criteria and measures for evaluating the usability of computer software designs is presented. The proposed model provides practitioners with a structured approach to select the best interface based on usability criteria and measures.

  • In this paper we propose a new dual structured tap selection algorithm for voice echo canceller in digital cellular communication system, investigating adaptive filtering algorithms for echo cancellation in long distance telephony or mobile communication system. The proposed algorithm has a two-stage processing structure that after a dispersive region in an impulse response of an echo path is found out, the tap coefficients of a short length filter are adjusted adaptively for the region, because the impuse response has a very little portion of the dispersion. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm with 256 taps gives a performance of convergence speed superior to both full-tap normalized least mean with 256 taps gives a performance of convergence speed superior to both full-tap normalized least mean square (NLMS) and a scrub taps waiting in a queue (STWQ) algorithms by about eighty per cent, also to a tap selection algorithm by about twenty per cent. And the resutls diplay that if the more tap coefficients are used due to a long delayed dispersive zone, the proposed algorithm produces the better performance.

  • A fundamental problem in analyzing complex multilevel-structured periodontal data is the violation of independency among the observations, which is an assumption in traditional statistical models (e.g., analysis of variance and ordinary least squares regression). In many cases, aggregation (i.e., mean or sum scores) has been employed to overcome this problem. However, the aggregation approach still exhibits certain limitations, such as a loss of power and detailed information, no cross-level relationship analysis, and the potential for creating an ecological fallacy. In order to handle multilevel-structured data appropriately, mixed effects models have been introduced and employed in dental research using periodontal data. The use of mixed effects models might account for the potential bias due to the violation of the independency assumption as well as provide accurate estimates.

  • The transfer function of vector-controlled induction motor is represented along with both unstructured and structured uncertainty such as the error of rotor time constant and current ripple. The low-pass-filter behavior of a magnetizing inductance gets rid of unstructured uncertainty in the transfer function. The robust controller to compensate variation of the transfer function is designed using simple P-I linear controllers. The coefficients of speed PI controller are determined from an overshoot and a rising time of system and the coefficients of model-following PI controller are obtained using the solution of Riccati equation of LQR control in the state space equation of the error system. Experimental results with the DSP-based model-following robust controller are shown a good robustness against the structured uncertainty of the motor.

  • Three dimensional data acquisition system based on the structured light is developed in this work. The system is composed of a CCD camera, slide projector, and various image processing programs. Calibration procedures and several image processing steps which are necessary to get the rnage data are described. A new grid labeling technique and a grid pattern are devised to improve the accuracy of th eobtained data. Preliminary experimental result shows that the developed system may be used as a simple and cheap 3D data acquisition system. Severla suggestions are included for further research.

  • A three dimensional finite element generation code has been developed attaching simple blocks. Block can be either a quadrature or a cube depending on the dimension of a subject considered. Finite element serendipity basis functions are employed to map elements between the computational domain and the physical domain. Elements can be generated with wser defined progressive ratio for each block. For blocks to be connected properly, a block should have a consistent numbering scheme for vertices, side nodes, edges and surfaces. In addition the edge information such as the number of elements and the progressive ratio for each direction should also be checked for interfaces to have unique node numbers. Having done so, user can add blocks with little worry about the orientation of blocks, Since the present the present code has been written by a Visual Basic language, it can be developed easily for a user interactive manner under a Windows environment.

  • Presented in this paper is a methodology for combining a Bayesian statistical approach with Data Quality Objectives (a structured decision-making method) to provide increased levels of confidence in analytical data when approaching a waste boundary. Development of sampling and analysis plans for the characterisation of radioactive waste often use a simple, one pass statistical approach as underpinning for the sampling schedule. Using a Bayesian statistical approach introduces the concept of Prior information giving an adaptive sample strategy based on previous knowledge. This aligns more closely with the iterative approach demanded of the most commonly used structured decision-making tool in this area (Data Quality Objectives) and the potential to provide a more fully underpinned justification than the more traditional statistical approach. The approach described has been developed in a UK regulatory context but is translated to a waste stream from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station to demonstrate how the methodology can be applied in this context to support decision making regarding the ultimate disposal option for radioactive waste in a more global context.

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is diagnosed by the clinical decision of a trained professional based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition or International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision diagnostic criteria. To obtain information for diagnostic formulation, professionals should explore detailed developmental history, and can use structured or semi-structured assessment tools to observe interaction between the child and parents or strangers. Diagnostic assessment should include a profile of the strength and weaknesses of the individual and should be conducted using an optimal approach by a multidisciplinary team with appropriate techniques and experience. Assessment of language, cognitive, neuropsychological, and adaptive functioning should be conducted in ASD individuals prior to establishing an individualized treatment plan. Genetic testing, brain magnetic resonance imaging or electroencephalogram testing can be considered for identification of underlying causes.

  • In the era of the Web 2.0, characterized by the openness, sharing and participation, it is easy for internet users to produce and share the data. The amount of the unstructured data which occupies most of the digital world's data has increased exponentially. One of the kinds of the unstructured data called personal online product reviews is necessary for both the company that produces those products and the potential customers who are interested in those products. In order to extract useful information from lots of scattered review data, the process of collecting data, storing, preprocessing, analyzing, and drawing a conclusion is needed. Therefore we introduce the text-mining methodology for applying the natural language process technology to the text format data like product review in order to carry out extracting structured data by using R programming. Also, we introduce the data-mining to derive the purpose-specific customized information from the structured review information drawn by the text-mining.
