Base isolation is one of the most widely implemented and well-known technique to reduce structural vibration and damages during an earthquake. However, while the base-isolated structure reduces storey drift significantly, it also increases the base drifts causing many practical problems. This study proposes the use of Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) wires for the reduction in base drift while controlling the overall structure vibrations. A multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structure along with base isolators and Shape-Memory-Alloys (SMA) wires in diagonal is tested experimentally and analytically. The isolation bearing considered in this study consists of laminates of steel and silicon rubber. The performance of the proposed structure is evaluated and studied under different loadings including harmonic loading and seismic excitation. To assess the seismic performance of the proposed structure, shake table tests are conducted on base-isolated MDOF frame structure incorporating SMA wires, which is subjected to incremental harmonic and historic seismic loadings. Root mean square acceleration, displacement and drift are analyzed and discussed in detail for each story. To better understand the structure response, the percentage reduction of displacement is also determined for each story. The result shows that the reduction in the response of the proposed structure is much better than conventional base-isolated structure.

The finite element method is a practical tool to compute the response of the irregularly layered soil deposit to the base-rock motions. The method is useful not only in estimating the interaction between the structure and the surrounding soil as a whole and the local behavior of the contacting area in detail, but also in predicting the resulting behavior of the superstructure affected by such soil-structure interactions. However, the computation of finite element analysis is marched in the time domain (TD), while the site response analysis has been carried out mostly in the frequency domain (FD) with equivalent linear analysis. This study is intended to compare the results of the TD and FD analysis with focus on the peak response accelerations and the predominant frequencies, and thus to evaluate the applicability and the validity of the finite element analysis in the site response analysis. The comparison shows that one can obtain the results very close to that of FD analysis, from the finite element analysis by including sufficiently large width of foundation in the model and further by applying partial mode superposition. The finite element analysis turned out to be well agreeing with FD analysis in their computed results of the peak acceleration and the acceleration response spectra, especially at the surface layer.

Across-wind response is often the cause of significant structural vibrations that in turn cause fatigue damage to welded and other connections. The efficacy of low-cost helical strakes to mitigate such adverse response is presented for a traffic signal structure. Field observations are made on a prototype structure in a natural wind environment without and with helical strakes installed on the cantilevered arm. Through continuous monitoring, the strakes were found to be effective in reducing across-wind response at wind speeds less than 10 m/s. Estimates of fatigue life are made for four different geographical locations and wind environments. Results for the class of traffic signal structure show that helical arm strakes are most effective in locations with benign wind environments where the average annual wind speed is not more than the vortex shedding wind speed, which for this investigation is 5 m/s. It is concluded that while strakes may be effective, it is not the panacea to mitigating connection fatigue at all locations.

The steady-state response for a coupled structure-acoustic-cavity systme has been investigated by numerical technique using a directly coupled finite element method(FEM) and Boundary Element Method(BEM) model. The Laplace tranformed matrix equations for the structure and the acoustic cavity are coupled directly satisfying the necessary equilibrium and compatibility conditions. The coupled FEM-BEM code is verified by comparing its prediction for an example with known analytical, numerical and experimental results. The example involves a coupled structure-acoustic-cavity system which is a box-type cavity with one end as experimentally excited pinned-pinned plate.

This paper presents the pillar section optimization technique considering the reliability of the vehicle body structure consisted of complicated thin-walled panels. The response surface method is utilized to obtain the response surface models that describe the approximate performance functions representing the system characteristics on the section properties of the pillar and on the mass and the natural frequencies of the vehicle B.I.W. The reliability-based design optimization on the pillar sections Is performed and compared with the conventional deterministic optimization. The FORM is applied for the reliability analysis of the vehicle body structure. The developed optimization system is applied to the pillar section design considering the fundamental natural frequencies of passenger car body structure. By applying the proposed RBDO technique, it can be possible to optimize the pillar sections considering the reliability that engineers require.
Recently, mega-float offshore structure is studied as one of the effective utilization of the ocean space. And mega-structure are now being considered for various applications such as floating airports, offshore cities and so on. This mega-float structure is relatively flexible compared with real floating structures like large ships. when we estimate dynamic responses of these structures in waves, the elastic deformation is important, because vertical dimension is small compared with horizontal. The analysis of the dynamic response as it receives regular wave is studied. The finite element method is used in the analysis of structural section of this model. And the analysis is carried out using the boundary element method in the fluid division. In order to know the characteristics of the dynamic response of the mega-float structures, effects of wavelength, water depth, and wave direction on dynamic response of the floating structure are studied by use of numerical calculation.

The main objective of this study was to investigate Korean university students' understanding of the structure of the atom based on a Lakatosian view. In this study, we examined twenty-three Korean university students' understandings of atomic structure using an open-ended questionnaire. The participants were all junior students majoring in chemistry education in Korea. The characteristics of students' understanding were categorized into three philosophical stances based on the classification criteria. Assertions were constructed concerning students' written descriptions of the development of scientific knowledge with respect to atomic structure: (a) characteristics of positivist response; (b) characteristics of transitional response; (c) characteristics of Lakatosian response; and (d) tendencies in students' responses.
To study the influence of an lower part on the seismic response of a spatial structure as the upper part of a structure, as a first step, authors subsititude the upper part and the lower part of a structure to single degree of freedom systems indivisually, and set up structural models connected by them. It is clarified that the mass ratio and the period ratio of an upper part to a lower part are important parameteres to find the amplification or reduction of the sesimic response of an upper part by considering of a lower part.
This paper evaluates the effects of topographical and geotechnical irregularities on the dynamic response of the 2-D soil-structure systems under ground motion by coupling finite and infinite elements. A numerical procedure is employed, and a parametric study is carried out for single-faced slope topographies. It is concluded that topographic conditions may have important effects on the ground motion along the slope. The geotechnical properties of the soil will also have significantly amplified effects on the whole system motion, which cannot be neglected for design purposes. So, dynamic response of a soil-structure systems are primarily affected by surface shapes and geotechnical properties of the soil. Location of the structure is another parameter affecting the whole system response.
The soil-structure relative stiffness is a key factor affecting the seismic response of underground structures. It is of great significance to study the soil-structure relative stiffness for the soil-structure interaction and the seismic disaster reduction of subway stations. In this paper, the dynamic shear modulus ratio and damping ratio of an inhomogeneous soft soil site under different buried depths which were obtained by a one-dimensional equivalent linearization site response analysis were used as the input parameters in a 2D finite element model. A visco-elasto-plastic constitutive model based on the Mohr-Coulomb shear failure criterion combined with stiffness degradation was used to describe the plastic behavior of soil. The damage plasticity model was used to simulate the plastic behavior of concrete. The horizontal and vertical relative stiffness ratios of soil and structure were defined to study the influence of relative stiffness on the seismic response of subway stations in inhomogeneous soft soil. It is found that the compression damage to the middle columns of a subway station with a higher relative stiffness ratio is more serious while the tensile damage is slighter under the same earthquake motion. The relative stiffness has a significant influence on ground surface deformation, ground acceleration, and station structure deformation. However, the effect of the relative stiffness on the deformation of the bottom slab of the subway station is small. The research results can provide a reference for seismic fortification of subway stations in the soft soil area.
