It is well known that wall impedance essentially determines how sound wave transmits from one place to another. The wall impedance is related with its dynamic properties : for example, the mass, stiffness, and damping characteristics. It is noteworthy, however, that the wall impedance is also function of spatial characteristics of two spaces that is separated by the wall. This is often referred that the wall is not locally reacting. In this paper, we have attempted to see how the acoustic characteristics of the two spaces is affected by various structure parameters such as density, applied tension, and a normalized length of the wall. Calculations are conducted for two different modally reacting boundary conditions by modal expansion method. The variation of the Helmholtz mode and the structural-dominated mode are analyzed as the structure parameters vary. The displacement distribution of the structure, pressure and active intensity of the inside and outside cavity are presented at the Helmholtz mode and the structure-dominated mode. It is shown that the frequency characteristics are governed by both structure-and fluid-dominated mode. The results exhibit that the density of the structure is the most sensitive design parameter on the frequency characteristics for the coupling system as we could imagine in the beginning. The Helmholtz mode frequency decrease as density increases. However. it increases as applied tension and an opening size increase. The bandwidth of the Helmholtz mode is mainly affected by density of the structure and its opening size.
Delamination of cover concrete due to re-bar corrosion is a critical damage reducing structural safety of reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, it should be detected and evaluated to provide appropriate maintenance to recover structural integrity. Impact-echo method, which utilizes thickness vibration characteristics of delaminated concrete section, is effective for detection and evaluation of small areal size delamination. However, it may not be applicable for large areal size delamination in which flexural vibration modes are dominated. In this study, applicability of vibration mode shapes of delaminated concrete section is investigated for visualization of delamination region in concrete structures. Numerical and experimental modal tests are performed to estimate mode shapes of delaminated concrete section and linear absolute summation technique is proposed for effective visualization of delamination region based on estimated mode shapes.
Two full-scale, precast, pretensioned box girders were subjected to shear-dominated loading, one under monotonic loads to failure and the other subjected to one-half million cycles of fatigue loads followed by monotonic ultimate loads. The number of cycles was selected to allow for comparison with previous research. The fatigue loads were applied in combination with occasional overloads. In the present study, fatigue loading reduced the shear capacity by only six percent compared to the capacity under monotonic loading. However, previous research on flexure-dominated girders subjected to the same number of repeated loads showed that fatigue loading changed the mode of failure from flexure to shear/flexure and the girder capacity dropped by 14 percent. The comparison of the measured data with calculated shear capacity from five different theoretical methods showed that the ACI code method, the compression field theory, and the modified compression field theory led to reasonable estimates of the shear strength. The truss model led to an overly conservative estimate of the capacity.
This article presented a comprehensive model to study static buckling stability and associated mode-shapes of higher shear deformation theories of sandwich laminated composite beam under the compression of varying axial load function. Four higher order shear deformation beam theories are considered in formulation and analysis. So, the model can consider the influence of both thick and thin beams without needing to shear correction factor. The compression force can be described through axial direction by uniform constant, linear and parabolic distribution functions. The Hamilton's principle is exploited to derive equilibrium governing equations of unified sandwich laminated beams. The governing equilibrium differential equations are transformed to algebraic system of equations by using numerical differential quadrature method (DQM). The system of equations is solved as an eigenvalue problem to get critical buckling loads and their corresponding mode-shapes. The stability of DQM in determining of buckling loads of sandwich structure is performed. The validation studies are achieved and the obtained results are matched with those. Parametric studies are presented to figure out effects of in-plane load type, sandwich thickness, fiber orientation and boundary conditions on buckling loads and mode-shapes. The present model is important in designing process of aircraft, naval structural components, and naval structural when non-uniform in-plane compressive loading is dominated.
This paper describes a simple method for evaluating the design wind loads for the structural frames of circular flat roofs with long spans. The dynamic response of several roof models were numerically analyzed in the time domain as well as in the frequency domain by using wind pressure data obtained from a wind tunnel experiment. The instantaneous displacement and bending moment of the roof were computed, and the maximum load effects were evaluated. The results indicate that the wind-induced oscillation of the roof is generally dominated by the first mode and the gust effect factor approach can be applied to the evaluation of the maximum load effects. That is, the design wind load can be represented by the time-averaged wind pressure multiplied by the gust effect factor for the first mode. Based on the experimental results for the first modal force, an empirical formula for the gust effect factor is provided as a function of the geometric and structural parameters of the roof and the turbulence intensity of the approach flow. The equivalent design pressure coefficients, which reproduce the maximum load effects, are also discussed. A simplified model of the pressure coefficient distribution is presented.

Numerical simulations of the Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) about a large-scale flexible pipe subject to shear flow were carried out in this paper. Efficiency verification was performed firstly, validating that the proposed fluid-structure interaction solution strategy is competent in predicting the VIV response. Then, the VIV characteristics related to multi-mode and spanwise hybrid waveform about the flexible pipe attributed to shear flow were investigated. When inflow velocity rises, higher vibration modes are apt to be excited, and the spanwise waveform easily convertes from a standing-wave-dominated status to a hybrid standing-traveling wave status. The multi-mode or even multiple-dominant-mode is prone to occur, that is, the dominant mode is often followed by several apparent subordinate modes with considerable vibration energy. Hence, the shedding frequencies no longer obey Strouhal law, and vibration trajectories become intricate. According to the motion analysis concerning the coupled cross-flow and in-line vibrations, as well as the corresponding wake patterns, a tight coupling interaction exists between the structural deformation and the wake flow behind the flexible pipe. In addition, the evolution of the vortex tube along the pipe span and a strong 3D effect are observed due to the slenderness of the flexible pipe and the variability of the vortex shedding attributed to the shear flow.
Most commercial buildings among existing RC buildings in Korea have a multi-story wall-frame structure where RC shear wall is commonly used as its core at stairways or elevators. The members of the existing middle and low-rise wall-frame buildings are likely arranged in ordinary details considering building occupancy, and the importance and difficulty of member design. This is because there are few limitations, considerations, and financial burdens on the code for designing members with ordinary details. Compared with the intermediate or unique details, the ductility and overstrength are insufficient. Furthermore, the behavior of the member can be shear-dominated. Since shear failure in vertical members can cause a collapse of the entire structure, nonlinear characteristics such as shear strength and stiffness deterioration should be adequately reflected in the analysis model. With this background, an 8-story RC wall-frame building was designed as a building frame system with ordinary shear walls, and the effect of reflecting the shear failure mode of columns and walls on the collapse mechanism was investigated. As a result, the shear failure mode effect on the collapse mechanism was evident in walls, not columns. Consequently, it is recommended that the shear behavior characteristics of walls are explicitly considered in the analysis of wall-frame buildings with ordinary details.
If a wall separates the bounded and unbounded spaces, then the wall's role in transporting the acoustic characteristics of the two spaces is not well defined. In this paper, we attempted to see how the acoustic characteristical of two spaces are really affected by the spatial characteristics of the wall. In order to understand coupling mechanism, we choose a finite space and a semi-infinite space separated by the flexible or rigid wall and an opening. A volume interaction can be occurred in structure boundary and a pressure interaction can be happened in the opening boundary. For its simplicity, without loosing generality, we use rather simplified rectangle model instead of generally shaped model. The source impedance is presented to the various types of boundaries. The distributions of pressure and active intensity are also presented at the cavity and structure-dominated modes. The resulting modification, shifts of mode1 frequencies and changing of standing wave patterns to satisfy both coupled boundary conditions and governing equations, are presented.
Seismic structural fragility constitutes an important step for performance based seismic design. Lateral load-resisting structural members are often analyzed under one component base excitation, while the effect of bi-directional shaking is accounted per simplified rules. Fragility curves are constructed herein under real bi-directional excitation by a simple extension of the conventional Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) under uni-directional shaking. Simple SODF systems, parametrically adjusted to different periods, are examined under a set of near-fault and far-fault excitations. Consideration of bi-directional interaction appears important for stiff systems. Further, the study indicates that the peak ground accelertaion, velocity and displacement (PGA, PGV and PGD) of accelerogram are relatively stable and efficient intensity measures for short, medium and long period systems respectively. '30%' combination rule seems to reasonably predict the fragility under bi-directional shaking at least for first mode dominated systems dealt herein up to a limit state of damage control.
In 2017 Pohang Earthquake, a number of residential buildings with pilotis at their first level were severely damaged. In this study, the results of an analytical investigation on the seismic performance and structural damage of two bearing wall buildings with pilotis are presented. The vibration mode and lateral force-resisting mechanism of the buildings with vertical and plan irregularity were investigated through elastic analysis. Then, based on the investigations, methods of nonlinear modeling for walls and columns at the piloti level were proposed. By performing nonlinear static and dynamic analyses, structural damages of the walls and columns at the piloti level under 2017 Pohang Earthquake were predicted. The results show that the area and arrangement of walls in the piloti level significantly affected the seismic safety of the buildings. Initially, the lateral resistance of the piloti story was dominated mainly by the walls resisting in-plane shear. After shear cracking and yielding of the walls, the columns showing double-curvature flexural behavior contributed significantly to the residual strength and ductility.
