Elastic-Plastic structural analysis was performed to evaluate structural characteristic and integrity for rocket motor case of solid propulsion system. The structural analyses were compared and evaluated using the simplified 2-D axisymmetric model and 3-D full model for rocket motor case with torispherical dome type. And pre-tension load for bolt model was considered in structural analysis. The results of displacement and stress for the simplified 2-D axisymmetric model and 3-D full model were in an good agreement with each other. Therefore, the simplified 2-D axisymmetric model for rocket motor case was recommended to verify quickly the structural integrity and save the modeling and calculating time in initial design stage. Also, the structural characteristic and integrity for rocket motor case according to 5 dome types was evaluated to select the optimal dome shape.

Tensile softening characteristics play an important role in the structural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high performance concrete. Tension softening modeling and numerical analysis method are necessary for the prediction of structural performance of steel fiber-reinforced concrete. The numerical method to predict the flexural behavior is proposed in this study. Tension softening modeling is carried out by using crack equation based on fictitious crack and inverse analysis in which load-crack opening displacement relationship is considered. Thereafter material modeling is performed considering tension softening. The comparison of moment-curvature curves of the numerical analysis results with the test results indicates a reasonable agreement. Therefore, the present numerical results prove that good prediction of flexural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high performance concrete beams can be achieved by employing the proposed method.

The dynamic characteristics of a bridge deduced by using the modeling techniques depend on its stiffness and mass calculated from its geometric model. This research develops the FE modeling techniques for a steel plate girder bridge with composite section. and proves their validity by comparing the results with those from actual measurement. The FE modeling techniques are divided into two categories--a simplified one and two-dimensional model and a detailed three-dimensional model. In the meantime, the dynamic responses of the bridge tested for this research were measured by the ambient vibration some of accelerometers were been attached to its upper slab girder under normal traffic load. The Cross Power Spectrum obtained from the measurement was used to analyze the dynamic characteristics by natural excitation techniques. The analytic results are compared to those of each FE modeling, and thereby the modeling techniques were proved to be valid.
The test results from non-destructive and destructive field testing of a three-span deteriorated reinforced concrete slab bridge are used as a vehicle to examine the reliability of available tools for finite-element analysis of in-situ structures. Issues related to geometric modeling of members and connections, material models, and failure criteria are discussed. The results indicate that current material models and failure criteria are adequate, although lack of inelastic out-of-plane shear response in most nonlinear shell elements is a major shortcoming that needs to be resolved. With proper geometric modeling, it is possible to adequately correlate the measured global, regional, and local responses at all limit states. However, modeling of less understood mechanisms, such as slab-abutment connections, may need to be finalized through a system identification technique. In absence of the experimental data necessary for this purpose, upper and lower bounds of only global responses can be computed reliably. The studies reaffirm that success of finite-element models has to be assessed collectively with reference to all responses and not just a few global measurements.
Chloride induced corrosion is a concern that governs the durability of concrete structures in marine environments, especially in tidal environments. During the service lives of concrete structures, internal cracks in the concrete cover may appear due to imposed loads, accelerating chloride penetration because of the simultaneous action of environmental and service structural loads. This paper investigated the effects of cyclic flexural loads on chloride diffusion characteristics of plain concretes, and proposed a model to predict the chloride penetration into plain concretes subjected to both tidal environments and different cyclic flexural load levels. Further, a new experiment was performed to verify the model. Results of the model using Finite Difference Method (FDM) showed that the durability of concretes in tidal environments was reduced as cyclic flexural load levels, SR, increased, and the modeling results fitted well with the experimental results.
A study for the structural strength analysis on the doubler plate subjected biaxial in-plane compression and shear load has been performed through the systematic evaluation process. In order to estimate the proper static strength of the doubler plate, non-linear elasto-plastic analysis is introduced. Gap element modeling for contact effect between the main plate and the doubler is prepared and nonlinear analysis procedures are illustrated based on MSC/N4W. In addition, some design guides are suggested through the consideration of several important effects such as corrosion of main plate, doubler width, doubler length and doubler thickness. Finally, theses result are compared with a developed design formula based on the buckling strength and general trends. The design guides, according to the variation of design parameters are discussed.

This article describes the dynamic behaviors of a rubber tired gantry crane(RTGC) under typical load conditions which are used in the design of gantry cranes. In order to investigate the dynamic characteristics of an RTGC, we developed a finite element crane model for its huge structure. The finite element model was validated with the modal test results, e.g., natural frequencies and normal modes. And other components of RTGC were converted into detailed 3D CAD models and finally transformed to rigid body models in a dynamic simulation program ADAMS. The load conditions considered in this paper were a normal operating condition(OP1) and container hanging condition with no external loads. As a result, we could find there was large influence of crane's vibration owing to its structural stiffness and deformation. And the vibration of crane could made the movements of RTGC, which occurs crash or malfunction of crane works.
The Stonecutters Bridge (SCB) in Hong Kong is the third-longest cable-stayed bridge in the world with a main span stretching 1,018 m between two 298 m high single-leg tapering composite towers. A Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System (WASHMS) is being implemented on SCB by the Highways Department of The Hong Kong SAR Government, and the SCB-WASHMS is composed of more than 1,300 sensors in 15 types. In order to establish a linkage between structural health monitoring and maintenance management, a Structural Health Rating System (SHRS) with relevant rating tools and indices is devised. On the basis of a 3D space frame finite element model (FEM) of SCB and model updating, this paper presents the development of an SHR-oriented 3D multi-scale FEM for the purpose of load-resistance analysis and damage evaluation in structural element level, including modeling, refinement and validation of the multi-scale FEM. The refined 3D structural segments at deck and towers are established in critical segment positions corresponding to maximum cable forces. The components in the critical segment region are modeled as a full 3D FEM and fitted into the 3D space frame FEM. The boundary conditions between beam and shell elements are performed conforming to equivalent stiffness, effective mass and compatibility of deformation. The 3D multi-scale FEM is verified by the in-situ measured dynamic characteristics and static response. A good agreement between the FEM and measurement results indicates that the 3D multi-scale FEM is precise and efficient for WASHMS and SHRS of SCB. In addition, stress distribution and concentration of the critical segments in the 3D multi-scale FEM under temperature loads, static wind loads and equivalent seismic loads are investigated. Stress concentration elements under equivalent seismic loads exist in the anchor zone in steel/concrete beam and the anchor plate edge in steel anchor box of the towers.

Modular construction is a construction method whereby prefabricated volumetric units are produced in a factory and are installed on site to form a building block. The construction productivity can be substantially improved by the manufacturing and assembly of standardized modular units. 3D printing is a computer-controlled fabrication method first adopted in the manufacturing industry and was utilized for the automated construction of small-scale houses in recent years. Implementing 3D printing in the fabrication of modular units brings huge benefits to modular construction, including increased customization, lower material waste, and reduced labor work. Such implementation also benefits the large-scale and wider adoption of 3D printing in engineering practice. However, a critical issue for 3D printed modules is the loading capacity, particularly in response to horizontal forces like wind load, which requires a deeper understanding of the building structure behavior and the design of load-bearing modules. Therefore, this paper presents the state-of-the-art literature concerning recent achievement in 3D printing for buildings, followed by discussion on the opportunities and challenges for examining 3D printing in modular construction. Promising 3D printing techniques are critically reviewed and discussed with regard to their advantages and limitations in construction. The appropriate structural form needs to be determined at the design stage, taking into consideration the overall building structural behavior, site environmental conditions (e.g., wind), and load-carrying capacity of the 3D printed modules. Detailed finite element modelling of the entire modular buildings needs to be conducted to verify the structural performance, considering the code-stipulated lateral drift, strength criteria, and other design requirements. Moreover, integration of building information modelling (BIM) method is beneficial for generating the material and geometric details of the 3D printed modules, which can then be utilized for the fabrication.
Recently, hydrogen energy has been widely used because of strict regulations on greenhouse gas emissions. For using the hydrogen energy, it is required to supply hydrogen through a tube trailer. However hydrogen tube trailer can have excessive load problems during transportation due to reasons such as road shape and driving method, which may lead a risk of hydrogen leakage. So it is necessary to secure a high level of safety. The purpose of this study is to evaluate structural safety for the conservative design of hydrogen tube trailer. First, finite element(FE) modeling of the designed hydrogen tube trailer was performed. After that, safety evaluation method was established through static structural simulation based on the standard GC207 conditions. In addition, effectiveness of the designed model was confirmed through the results of the structural safety evaluation. Finally, driving simulation was used to derive acceleration graph according to time, which was considered as a dynamic property for the evaluation of conservative tube trailer safety evaluation. And dynamic structural simulation was conducted as a condition for actual transportation of tube trailer by applying dynamic properties. As a results, conservative safety was evaluated through dynamic structural simulation and the safety of hydrogen tube trailer was confirmed through satisfaction of the safety rate.
