  • One of the most important factors for a proper design of a slender compression member may be the exact determination of the elastic critical load of that member. In the cases of non-prismatic compression member, however, there are times when the exact critical load becomes impossible to determinate if one relies on the neutral equilibrium method or energy principle. Here in this paper, the approximate critical loads of symmetrically or non-symmetrically tapered members are computed by finite element method. The two parameters considered in this numerical analysis are the taper parameter, $\alpha$ and the sectional property parameters, m. The computed results for each sectional property parameter, m are presented in an algebraic equation which agrees with those by F.E.M The algebraic equation can be easily used by structural engineers, who are engaged in structural analysis and design of non-prismatic compression member.

  • The cryogenic ball milling was performed on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at an extremely low temperature to increase the dispersion of CNTs. The effects of milling speed and time on the deagglomeration and structural changes of CNTs were studied. FESEM was used to analyze the dispersion and the change of particle size before and after milling process. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis was also investigated the effect of cryogenic ball milling on the morphological characteristics of CNTs. The structural changes by the cryogenic ball milling process were further confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopic analysis. The results showed that the agglomeration of CNTs was significantly reduced and amorphous structure was observed at high milling speed. However, the milling time has no great effect on the dispersion property and structural change of CNTs compared with milling speed.

  • Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) foil is a novel structural material which has being used in shell and spatial structures. This paper studies biaxial creep property of ETFE foil by creep tests and numerical simulation. Biaxial creep tests of cruciform specimens were performed using three stress ratios, 1:1, 2:1 and 1:2, which showed that creep coefficients in biaxial tension were much smaller than those in uniaxial one. Then, a reduction factor was introduced to take account of this biaxial effect, and relation between the reduction factor and stress ratio was established. Circular bubble creep test and triangle cushion creep test of ETFE foil were performed to verify the relation. Interpolation was adopted to consider creep stress and reduction factor was involved to take account of biaxial effect in numerical simulation. Simulation results of the bubble creep test embraced a good agreement with those measuring ones. In triangle cushion creep test, creep displacements from numerical simulation showed a good agreement with those from creep test at the center and lower foil measuring points.

  • Smart structural system is defined as structural system with a certain-level of autonomy relying on the embedded functions of sensors, actuators and processors, that can automatically adjust structural characteristics, in response to the change in external disturbance and environments, toward structural safety and serviceability as well as the extension of structural service life. In this study, carbon and glass hybrid fiber materials were investigated fundamentally for the applicability of self diagnosis in smart concrete structural system as embedded functions of sensors.

  • A stress measurement method of structural member using piezoelectric property and electrostatic voltmeter is presented. The electric potentials of the surface of the piezoelectric element, which are proportional to the strain ${\varepsilon}$ on the structural member, are measured by an electrostatic voltmeter during load cycling. The stress ${\sigma}$ is calculated by this strain ${\varepsilon}$. Moreover, a stress distribution measurement tape which can be used for the stress distribution measurement along a specified line on the surface of structural member is developed, and the surface potential was measured by an electric static voltmeter of non-contact type. The applicability of the stress distribution measurement tape is examined through experiments using a notched specimen under cyclic loading. The measured distributions of x, y and xy are compared with those calculated by FEM analysis.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the evaluation of texture image and preference according to the structural characteristics of silk fabric, and to analyze the effects of texture image and sensibility on the preference. 53 female subjects evaluated fabric image and sensibility of 17 specimens of white silk fabrics sold on the market with semantic differential scale. The data were analyzed through factor analysis, Pearson correlational coefficient and t-test using SPSS win 13.0. For the evaluation, structural characteristics such as fiber contents, weave type, weight and thickness were analyzed. Factor analysis showed that sensibilities were classified into 3 categories; 'surface property', 'weight', 'flexibility'. Fabric images were classified into 2 categories; 'elegance' and 'naturalness'. Statistically significant differences of structural characteristics on the texture image were observed. Weave type affected 'surface property' and fiber contents affected' flexibility'. Weight and weave type affected' elegance', too. The significant factors affecting preference were fabric image of 'elegance' and structural characteristics of 'weave type'. The results of this study showed that the most preferred silk fabric is smooth and soft satin weaved fabric with texture image of 'elegance'.

  • We examined the temperature-dependent structural and magnetic properties of HgI2 in the temperature range of 300~400 K. HgI2 is a diamagnetic material and can be used for X-ray or γ-ray detectors. DCmagnetization measurements on HgI2 showed that there is a small but distinguishable change in its diamagnetic properties near 375 K. The magnetic property change is not expected because Hg and I are known as nonmagnetic elements. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements revealed a structural transition in the temperature of 350~400 K. Temperature-dependent x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) demonstrated that the chemical valence states of both Hg and I did not changed in the temperature range of 300~400 K. However, XAFS revealed that the bond-length disorder was slightly increased in the temperature range, particularly, near Hg atoms. The structural changes of HgI2 are likely related to its diamagnetic property change. We will discuss the relation between the diamagnetic properties and local structural properties of HgI2 in detail.

  • Vehicle body frame stiffness affects the dynamic and static characteristics. Vehicle frame structural performance is greatly affected by crossmember and joint design. While the structural characteristics of these joints vary widely, there is no known tool currently in use that quickly predicts joint stiffness early in design cycle. This paper presents the joint design factors affecting on low frequency vibration. The joint factors are joint panel thickness, section property, flange width and weld point space. To study the effect on vehicle low frequency vibration, case studies for these factors are performed. And Sensitivity analysis for section property is performed. The result can present design guide for high-stiffness vehicle.

  • ZnO thin films on (001) sapphire substrates have been deposited by pulsed laser deposition(PLD) technique at the oxygen pressure of 350 mTorr. In order to investigate the effect of post-annealing treatment with oxygenn pressure of 350 mTorr on the optical property of ZnO thin films, films have been annealed at various substrate temperatures after deposition. After post-annealing treatment in the oxygen ambient, the optical properties of the ZnO thin films were characterized by PL(Photoluminescence) and structural properties of the ZnO were characterized by XRD, and have investigated structural property and optical property for application of light emission device.
