  • Punching shear in concrete slabs is a serious problem in certain structural systems, such as flat slab. In this study, mechanical improvement between specimens which are unstrengthened and strengthened with steel plate and fiber panel is experimentally investigated. The strengthened bridge deck specimens had increment of strength and broke down with punching shear failure. Strengthening ratio should be considered to restraint punching failure.

  • A Simultaneous optimal design of structural and control system of a semi-active suspension is applied on a helf-car model in this paper. Suspension stiffnesses and dampings are selected as structural design parameters and damping forces of variable dampers as controller parameters. Sence this optimization problem is of large discontinuous space, conventional exhaustive methods are not enough. So we here try out an approach using Genetic Algorithm for our problem. Through numerical simulation work, the performance of the simultaneously optimized system was tested and showed meaningful improvement over the partially optimized ones.

  • Tunnel fire accident is one of the critical railway accidents, together with collision and derailment. For the safe operation many tunnel design guidelines are proposed but many Korean railway tunnels do not satisfy these guidelines. For the safety improvement, current safety level is estimated in this study. But so many uncertainties in major input parameters make the safety estimation difficult. In this study, probabilistic techniques are applied for the consideration of uncertainties in major input parameters. As results of this study, probabilistic safety estimation code is developed.

  • The safety factors of current standard code are considered to be not appropriate compared to design and construction practices, even this safety factors are not determined from probabilistic study but merely from experiences and practices. This study pripose the optimum safety indices based on expected total cost minimization using only three parameters, which are the level of the failure cost to the initial cost by improvement in safety, and the order of the initial cost function.

  • The visco-elastic dampers were used to improve the torsional responses of an asymmetric buildings. The modal characteristic equation of an asymmetric structure with added viscoelastic dampers were derived using the complex modal analysis method. Parametric study has been performed based on the modal characteristics, and the appropriate condition for compensating the stiffness eccentricity was investigated. According to the results the torsional response of the asymmetric buildings could be improved significantly once the dampers were properly placed

  • The dynamic characteristics of Control Element Drive Mechanism (CEDM) in Korea standard Nuclear Power Plant was reviewed as a secondary mass in a simplified two degree of freedom system, while the reactor vessel as a primary mass. The design improvement stratege to minimize each displacement amplitude of these primary and secondary masses was proposed. According to this stratege the designs of CEDM components, the shroud and the pressure housing, respectively, were changed using optimization technique.

  • In aerospace industry improvement of structural performance of flight structure without increasing weight has great advantage. In this study, an innovative design method to increase the buckling load and tension failure load at the same time without increasing the weight was investigated by using the curvilinear fiber format in composite plates with central hole. It was investigated how much gain can be obtained with curvilinear fiber format for the plates with different hole size and different stacking sequence.

  • Since the introduction of aspirin as a therapeutic agent in 1899, there have been numerous attempts at the improvement of its therapeutic value through molecular modification. These endeavors have centered mainly around the following two approaches : (a) improvement of the potency by introduction of a suitable group or groups on the benzene ring; and (b) modification of the carboxylic acid group, which is thought to be an immediate cause of the irritant effect.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the fire safety characteristic of the FRP vessel. In this study, we analyzed the fire accidents of FRP vessel and investigated the ruels of domestic and other country for the structural fire protection standard of FRP vessel. We suggested the fire-retardent resin quality standard, and the improvement program for fire safety of FRP vessel.
