Status and Role of Technological Knowledge Exchange Network in Regional Cluster: Performance Differences in Structural Equivalent Groups (지역 클러스터 내 기술지식 교류 네트워크의 지위와 역할: 구조적 등위성 집단의 성과 차이)

  • This study empirically conduct structural equivalence analysis based on social network analysis in picking up on overall structural characteristics of technological knowledge exchange in a regional cluster. Previous conceptual studies so far have argued that performance differences among structurally equivalent groups exist. However, because little research has been done to empirically investigate this conceptual hypothesis, this study is conducted as complementary to fill this void. For analysis, we utilize two-mode network data consisted of 2,550 firms by investigating 53 technological knowledge exchange-related associations within Gumi national industrial cluster. The results show that some structurally equivalent groups can be defined appropriately and its role can be conditioned by firms' salient characteristics attached to each structural equivalent groups. In addition, it is presented through the present study that performance difference in structural equivalent groups can be distinct by some selected performance indicators. Finally, this study suggests the need to advance the study of performance differences in structurally equivalent groups in the future.

  • This study aimed to analyze media reports of the Comprehensive Library Advancement Plan using big data analysis in order to determine trends and implications by period. To do so, related data from 2009 to 2017 were collected from major domestic web portal sites. Words in the collected data were refined through the text mining process and frequency, centrality, and structural equivalence analyses were performed. Results confirmed that, during the implementation of the first and the second phases of the Comprehensive Library Advancement Plan, the focus of the library policy changed from external growth to strengthening internal stability and advancement of library operation, and the media coverage were limited to specific policies such as expansion of library facilities. Findings from this study will serve as useful material for ascertaining the approach to perceive and understand the national library policy represented by the Comprehensive Library Advancement Plan.

  • This paper presents an analytical model for RC beam-column connections that takes into account bond deterioration between reinforcing steel and concrete. The model is based on the Lumped Damage Mechanics (LDM) theory which allows for the characterization of cracking, degradation and yielding, and is extended in this paper by the inclusion of the slip effect as observed in those connections. Slip is assumed to be lumped at inelastic hinges. Thus, the concept of "slip hinge", based on the Coulomb friction plasticity theory, is formulated. The influence of cracking on the slip behavior is taken into account by using two concepts of LDM: the effective moment on an inelastic hinge and the strain equivalence hypothesis. The model is particularly suitable for wide beam-column connections for which bond deterioration dominates the hysteretic response. The model was evaluated by the numerical simulation of five tests reported in the literature. It is found that the model reproduces closely the observed behavior.

A Study on Continuum Modeling of Large Platelike Lattice Structures (거대한 평판형 격자구조물의 연속체 모델링에 관한 연구)

  • A rational and straightforward method is introduced for developing continuum models of large platelike periodic lattice structures based on energy equivalence, The procedure for developing continuum models involves using existing finite element matrices in calculating strain and kinetic energies of a repeating cell. The equivalent continuum plate properties are obtained from the direct comparison of the reduced stiffness and mass matrices for continuum and lattice plates. Numerical results prove that the method developed in this paper shows very good agreement with other well-recognized methods.

  • The piezoelectric coupling in piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters with load resistance induces electrical damping as well as increase in the system stiffness. Starting from analytically deriving the explicit relations through governing equations in the frequency domain, this work identifies the characteristics of the electrically induced damping mechanism and shows that the electrically induced damping serves as a structural hysteretic damping on condition that a piezoelectric vibration energy harvester is excited at its short-circuit resonant frequency and its load resistor is optimally impedance- matched at the same time. Finally, it is analytically verified that the equivalence of a mechanical and an electrically induced damping ratio is required for the maximum power generation at a load resistor, which was claimed in some literature.

  • In this paper, a methodology for the estimation of masonry elasticity and shear moduli is presented, for linear elasticity considerations. The methodology is based on the assumption that for a "periodic" masonry wall, which is formed by the repetition of a basic unit containing blocks and mortar, the mechanical characteristics of the unit are representative of the characteristics of the entire wall. For their calculation, the finite element analysis method is used. A micro-model with finite elements simulating separately the blocks and the mortar is developed. An equivalent finite element model, using an homogenous material is also developed and assuming equivalence of strains for the two models, the homogenous material properties are estimated. The efficiency of the method and its applicability limits are investigated.

  • A simple and straightforward method is introduced for developing continuum beam-rod model of a box-beam typed aircraft wing with composite layered skin based on "energy equivalence." The equivalent continuum structral properties are obtained from the direct comparison of the reduced stiffness and mass matrices for box-beam typed wing with those for continuum beam-rod model. The stiffness and mass matrices are all represented in terms of the continuum degrees-of freedom defined in this paper. The finite-element method. The advantage of the present continuum method is to give every continuum structural properties including all possible coupling terms which represent the couplings between different deformations. To evaluate the continuum method developed in this paper, free vibration analyses for both continuum beam-rod and box-beam are conducted. Numerical tests show that the present continuum method gives very reliable structural and dynamic properties compared to the results by the conventional finite-element analysis. analysis.

Bending and shear stiffness optimization for rigid and braced multi-story steel frames

  • The response of multi-story building structures to lateral loads, mainly due to earthquake and wind, is investigated for preliminary design purposes. Emphasis is placed on structural systems consisting of rigid and braced steel frames. An attempt to gain a qualitative understanding of the influence of bending and shear stiffness distribution on the deformations of such structures is made. This is achieved by modeling the structure with a stiffness equivalent Timoshenko beam. It is observed that the conventional stiffness distribution, dictated by strength constraints, may not be the best to satisfy deflection criteria. This is particularly the case for slender structural systems with prevailing bending deformations, such as flexible braced frames. This suggests that a new approach to the design of such frames may be appropriate when serviceability governs. A pertinent strategy for preliminary design purposes is proposed.

  • An investigation into the influence of ultrasonic standing wave on the structural behavior of propane/air premixed flame has been made to get a clue to the combustion reaction acceleration and combustion instability, as well. Visualization technique utilizing the Schlieren method was employed for the observation of structural variation of the premixed flame. The flame shape and propagation velocity were measured according to the variation of equivalence ratio. It was found that the standing wave distorted the flame front and expedited a transition to the flame with turbulent nature.

Technology Innovation and Changes on Structure of Value Creation in an Industrial Ecosystem (산업생태계의 기술혁신과 가치창출 구조 변화)

  • The existing innovation policies and strategies mainly focused on the influencing factors for improvement of innovation outcome. However, these strategies were not always successful in driving innovative activities that make technology innovation disseminated. In this regard, innovation ecosystems approach has recently been coming to the force to establish a successful innovation strategy. The innovation ecosystems concept describes that innovation processes are evolved through collaborative networks of economic actors. In an innovation ecosystem, different organizations collaborate for technology development and its use. They interact for value co-creation by sharing mutual resources. The organizational networks are re-organized by dynamic changes of actors' interactions, which drive innovation mechanism of the networks. Recent studies on innovation ecosystems mostly have paid attention on developing theoretical frameworks to describe dynamics of an innovation ecosystem. There have hardly been empirical tests on the theoretical ecosystem models. In this vein, we investigated dynamics of an innovation ecosystem by analyzing structural characteristics of a collaborative network among organizations which are involved in the use of innovative technologies. Particularly, we examined the longitudinal changes of the interaction patterns among the organizations. This test was performed by an analysis of structural equivalence on the network dataset transformed from the organizational interactions. This result provides a guideline for an organization in developing an innovation strategy under a systemic perspective.
