Synthesis of Nickel-doped Transparent Glass-ceramics for Ultra-broadband Optical Fiber Amplifiers

  • The structural and optical properties of Ni-doped transparent glass-ceramics are reviewed. The quantum efficiencies of ceramics were examined to explore suitable crystalline phase for Ni-doping in glass-ceramics. Inverse spinel $LiGa_5O_8$ have the quantum efficiency of almost 100 % at room temperature. Transparent glass ceramics containing $LiGa_5O_8$ was successfully synthesized by heat treatment of $Li_2O-Ga_2-O_3-SiO_2-NiO$ glass. Most of $Ni^{2+}$ ions in glass-ceramic were incorporated into $LiGa_5O_8$ nanocrystals. The near-infrared emission covering from the O-band to L-band (1260-1625 nm) was observed from the Ni-doped $Li_2O-Ga_2O_3-SiO_2$ glass-ceramic though it was not observed from the as-cast glass. The lifetime of the emission was about $580\;{\mu}sec$ even at 300K. The emission quantum efficiency was evaluated as about 10 % that is enough high for practical usage as gain media of optical fiber amplifiers. The figure of merit (the product of the stimulated emission cross section and lifetime) was as high as that of rare-earth-doped glasses. The broad bandwidth, high quantum efficiency and high figure of merit show that transparent glass-ceramics containing $Ni^{2+}:LiGa_5O_8$ nanocrystals are promising candidates as novel ultra-broadband gain media.

  • (1-x)(Na,K)$NbO_3$-xBa(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ lead free piezoelectric ceramics were synthesized to enhance the piezoelectric properties of (Na,K)$NbO_3$. The synthesis and sintering method were the conventional solid state reaction method and general sintering method in air atmosphere. We report the improved piezoelectric properties in the perovskite structure composed of the NKN and BZT ceramics. We investigated the effects of NKN, BZT on the structural and electrical properties of the NKN-BZT ceramics. The NKN-BZT ceramics show good performance with piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$=155pC/N. The results reveal that (1-x)(Na,K)$NbO_3$-xBa(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ ceramics are promising candidate materials for lead-free piezoelectric application.

  • The microwave dielectric properties of complex perovskite-structured $Ba(Mg_{1/3}Ta_{2/3})O_3$ ceramics were investigated with calcining condition. The BMT ceramics were prepared by conventional mixed oxide method. Calcining conditions were $1200^{\circ}C$ for 10hr., $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2hr., and 5hr., respectively. And the specimens were sintered at $1650{\mu}m$. The structural and microwave properties of BMT ceramics were investigated by XRD, SEM and network analyzer. In the case of BMT ceramics calcined at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr., dielectric constant, quality factor and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency were 20.26, 31,144(at 1GHz), 6.11[ppm/$^{\circ}C$], respectively.

  • We fabricated $(Li_{0.5-x}Na_xLa_{0.5})Ti_{0.8}Zr_{0.2}O_3$(LNTLZ)ceramics ($0{\leq}x{\leq}0.4$) with a perovskite structure via standard solid state synthesis. The influence of Na content on the structural and electrical properties of LNTLZ ceramics was also investigated. During XRD patterns analysis, all of the samples showed orthorhombic structure. The resistance of LNTLZ ceramics decreased as Na content increased, and the maximum activation energy shows 0.56 eV at x=0.4 at room temperature. These results indicated that LNTLZ ceramics are a candidate for use Lithium ion batteries as electrolytes.

BMT-BCN 세라믹스의 구조 및 마이크로파 유전특성 (Structural and Microwave Dielectric Properties of BMT-BCN Ceramics)

  • In this study, the $(1-\chi)Ba(Mg_{\fraction one-third}Ta_{\fraction two-thirds}O_3-\chiBa(Co_{\fraction one-third}\Nb_{\fraction two-thirds})O_3$ ceramics($\chi$=0.3,0.4,0.5,0.6) were prepared by the conventional mixed oxide method. The ceramics were sintered at the temperature of $1500~1575^{\circ}C$ for5 hours in air. The BMT-BCN ceramics have a complex perovskite structure, and have peaks of (101), (102), (201), (202) and (212). Increasing the sintering temperature, dielectric constant was increased. Temperature coefficients of resonant frequency of the specimens were decreasing with increasing BCN content. In the case of the 0.7BMT-0.3BCN ceramics sintered at $1575^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours, dielectric constant, quality factor and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency for microwave dielectrics application were a good value of 28, 235500 at ㎓ and -$1.2 ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The lead-free $0.98(Na_{0.5},K_{0.5})NbO_3-0.02Ba(Zr_{0.52},Ti_{0.48})O_3$-(hereafter NKN-BZT) CuO, ZnO-doped ceramics were prepared using a conventional mixed oxide method. NKN-BZT ceramics doped CuO, ZnO have superior structural and electrical properties than pure NKN-BZT ceramics. For the NKN-BZT-ZnO ceramics sintered at $1,120^{\circ}C$, piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) of sample showed the optimum values of 172 pC/N. The $0.98(Na_{0.5},K_{0.5})NbO_3-0.02Ba(Zr_{0.52},Ti_{0.48})O_3$-ZnO ceramics are a promising candidate for lead-free piezoelectric materials.

  • The microwave dielectric properties of $TiTe_3O_8-CaF_2$ ceramics were investigated. All sample of $TiTe_3O_8-CaF_2$ ceramics were prepared by the conventional mixed oxide method, and sintered in the temperature of $730^{\circ}C{\sim}750^{\circ}C$. The structural properties of $TiTe_3O_8-CaF_2$ ceramics were investigated by the X-ray diffractor meter. According to the X-ray diffraction patterns of $TiTe_3O_8-CaF_2$ ceramics, the major phase of the cubic $TiTe_3O_8$ were presented. In the case of $1molTiTe_3O_8-0.1molCaF_2$ ceramics sintered at $740^{\circ}C$ for 5hr., the bulk density, dielectric constant, quality factor were $2.8g/cm^3$, 39.1, 36.100GHz, respectively.

  • The microwave dielectric properties of $0.6Mg_4Ta_2O_9-0.4TiO_2$ ceramics were investigated. All sample of $0.6Mg_4Ta_2O_9-0.4TiO_2$ ceramics were prepared by the conventional mixed oxide method, and sintered in the temperature of $1350^{\circ}C{\sim}1450^{\circ}C$. The structural properties of $0.6Mg_4Ta_2O_9-0.4TiO_2$ ceramics were investigated by the X-ray diffraction meter. According to the X-ray diffraction patterns of $0.6Mg_4Ta_2O_9-0.4TiO_2$ ceramics, the major phase of the hexagonal $0.6Mg_4Ta_2O_9-0.4TiO_2$ were presented, In the case of $0.6Mg_4Ta_2O_9-0.4TiO_2$ ceramics sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 5hr., the dielectric constant, quality factor and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency were 12.19, 109.411GHz, -17.21ppm/$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Recently, engineering ceramics called as the 3 material have been concerned significantly with some excellent mechanical properties and many functions as new materials for high precision mechanical components and engineering parts for at large. Then, for designing engineering parts using engineering ceramics, bending strength value data with high reliability is more essential than any other mechanical properties. But, because of brittleness and structural characteristic, it is very hard to grind with conventional tools, and the generation of cracks and various defects of engineering ceramics parts during grinding machining process are serious problems. Thus, in present study, surface grinding experiments with various machining conditions using resin bond diamond wheels are carried out to obtain the most excellent guality of testpiece surface and optimum step of grinding process for the high efficient stock removal rate to save running time. As the results from grinding experiments and 3-points bending strength test of ground Al2O3 ceramics parts on Korean Standard, manufactured in our country and Japan, basic technology and know-how to develop the optimum grinding machining conditions and also high bending strength values with high reliability are obtained.

  • In this study, NKN-LST ceramics were prepared by a conventional mixed oxide method and their structure and piezoelectric properties were investigated with the variations of sintering temperature. It was observed that the various sintering temperatures influenced the electrical properties and structural properties of the NKN-LST ceramics. It was found that the piezoelectric properties of NKN-LST ceramic sintered at $1080^{\circ}C$ for 4h has a piezoelectric constant and a planar electromechanical coupling coefficient of 161pC/N and 0.311% respectively. This ceramics look very promising as possible, practicable, lead-free replacements for lead zirconate titanate.
